17.01.2022 Dear alumni, If you studied at Willetton SHS between February 2015 and December 2017, you certainly met Mr Matthieu Heimel, former French teacher in the Languages department. Mr Heimel was born in the Philippines and lived in an orphanage until he was adopted at the age of two and a half by a French family. His adoptive parents had already two biological children when they decided to adopt three other boys from different families in the Philippines. In December 2018, Mr Hei...mel started to search for his birth parents at the age of 39. His journey took him over five countries and into an unsolved Australian murder mystery as he discovered that his birth mother migrated to Australia in 1985 and disappeared in Melbourne in 1987. Although he has solved several family mysteries over the last year and a half, he is still trying to find closure with regards to his birth mother who disappeared 33 years ago. This is why he has contacted the agency Artemis Media in Fremantle to broadcast his birth mother’s story at a national level, hoping that someone who knows what happened to her will step forward and speak up. There were 256 applications for the TV show and only six stories have been selected for Season 2 of Every Family Has A Secret. The documentary will be broadcast on Tuesday 29th of September on SBS Australia and will be available online on SBS On Demand for one year. It is a story of resilience which will inspire people by showing that while difficult times do come, they can be overcome. Please keep the date in your calendar, and you can follow his journey on his Facebook Page at @mattheimel or Instagram at matthieu_heimel. See more

05.01.2022 Every parent want their kids to burst through the door after school each day excited to share what they’ve learned. And WA science teacher Darren Hamley has mad...e that his mission and is delivering it. Whether it’s building solar-powered cars, or 3D printing dolphins to assess how damage to dorsal fins affects swimming performance, he has an innate ability to tap into what each student is passionate about and help them to understand how to apply science in real life. This week Darren’s hard work and dedication was recognised with the $50,000 PM’s Prize for Excellence in Science Teaching in Secondary Schools. He’s been teaching at Willetton Senior High in WA for 28 years and coordinates the schools’ gifted education program. It was great to catch up with Darren and some of his students, Amity, Naimish and Serina, yesterday, with their local MP Ben Morton, to congratulate him on this well-deserved honour and hear from those students just what a difference Darren is making to their education.
