25.01.2022 Congratulations to our team of talented and hardworking students who recently competed in the Future Problem Solving Australian National Finals. 23.01.2022 The Premier's Reading Challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely. Over 480 students from K-9 completed the Challenge with over 11,000 books read since the challenge began in March. Ten PRC medals will be presented to students with another 34 platinum awards and 45 gold awards also being handed out this year. Well done to everyone involved! #IAmAnExtraordinaryLearner

23.01.2022 Rotinas interest in Science stems from a strong desire to contribute to the ongoing improvement of healthcare for women in the Solomon Islands. Studying Extension Science has given Rotina the opportunity to conduct a scientific research project based on the traditional medical practices in the Solomon Islands, specifically investigating the use of hibiscus rosa-sinensis (a type of hibiscus leaf) during childbirth. The leaves are made into a liquid tonic and drunk by pregnan...t woman once in labour. This acts as a catalyst to quicken contractions. This practice is however contradicted by other cultures such as India and Tahiti. Rotinas project focused on investigating the plants potential toxicity, to determine whether it is safe to use during childbirth. By conducting a series of experiments, involving pure chemicals from the hibiscus leaves and testing solutions in different concentrations on water invertebrates called daphnia, Rotinas research concluded there was enough of an effect to warrant a future study into the toxicity of the plant. We look forward to following Rotinas research in the years to come as her aim is to study Medical Research upon leaving school, with the ultimate goal of improving healthcare for women in the Solomon Islands. #IAmAnExtraordinaryLearner #IAmPassionateToServe

22.01.2022 Last week Dr Marsh was extremely pleased to be presented with a copy of Wildflowers, a beautiful yet thought-provoking book written by the 2017 Alumnus of the Year, Dr Belinda Ramirez. Wildflowers is a thoughtful blend of photography and narrative, produced to share the inspiring stories of survivors of human trafficking in the Philippines and the organisations behind them making tangible progress in the fight against modern slavery. The Wildflowers project was born out of Belindas burning passion to make an impact a real impact in the fight against human trafficking. You can support Belinda in her fight to put an end to human trafficking by purchasing a copy of Wildflowers at https://www.belindaramirez.net/ #IAmPassionateToServe #IAmPartOfAChristCentredCommunity

22.01.2022 We officially bid farewell to the Class of 2020 this morning at the Year 12 Graduation Ceremony. We were so pleased to welcome parents and carers to the College to celebrate this momentous occasion. During Dr Marsh’s final address, he spoke of three aspects in life that are of great significance to him: to deeply cherish your relationships, use your time wisely and give great thought to establishing and understanding what you believe in. What great advice for us all! We conti...nue to pray for the Class of 2020 as they go into the world. May you take hold of what lies before you and become the person God has created you to be. Matthew 5:14-16 You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. #IAmPartOfAChristCentredCommunity #IAmAnExtraordinaryLearner #IAmLearningWisdomForLife #IAmPassionateToServe

19.01.2022 Remembrance Day is the anniversary of the Armistice that ended fighting with Germany in World War I. It is also a day to remember and honour all Australians who have served. Almost two million men and women have worn with pride the uniforms of the Royal Australian Navy, Australian Army and Royal Australian Air Force. This NAIDOC week we also acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders who have occupied and cared for Australia for over 65,000 years and who also have... a proud history of military service. Reginald Saunders was an inspiring soldier, veteran and champion for Indigenous equality. (Listen to Reg's story of courage during World War II in this short film https://youtu.be/vcr1teNsdNc) Tragically, over 102,000 names are listed on the Roll of Honour at the Australian War Memorial. Those listed were members of the Australian armed forces who died during or as a result of war service, or for post-1945 conflicts, warlike service, non-warlike service and certain peacetime operations. Today we paused, along with all Australians, to unite in solemn respect and remembrance for those who served and died. #IAmPassionateToServe

17.01.2022 This week we have been celebrating Library Lover’s Week, a salute to libraries and all they offer. Both the Primary and Secondary walls have been decorated with encouraging messages to start a good book. Head of Library, Nicole Yule says Research shows the vitally important role reading for pleasure plays in developing student’s literacy. We focused on a variety of genres and encouraged students to borrow a book to fall in love with, whether it is from the romance, classic, humour, historical, action, mystery or biography genre. Thank you to our wonderful Teacher Librarians who make the Library and reading fun and accessible for all students. #IAmPassionateToServe #IAmAnExtraordinaryLearner

17.01.2022 Year 6 recently participated in 'Become Me', an interactive workshop designed to teach young people the adaptive skills and curiosity theyll need to explore, design and navigate the fast changing world of work. Students reflected on their unique and evolving strengths, interests and aspirations while exploring the dynamic and exciting world of work, recognising and breaking free of gender and social stereotypes. Research demonstrates that laying these critical skill foundations in the primary years helps students become more inspired learners today, as well as improving longer term academic and career outcomes. #IAmAnExtraordinaryLearner

14.01.2022 Throughout this week, the College will be observing and participating in NAIDOC week. Students from P-12 will have the opportunity to further their understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their rich culture. This NAIDOC week we have also taken the opportunity to launch our Reconciliation Strategy. This strategy provides insights into how we can show respect for and support members of our College community and the wider community that identify as Abo...riginal and/or Torres Strait Islander. We have put together a short film to introduce our reconciliation strategy and importantly, our Darug Culture and Language program. You can view both the film and obtain a copy of our Reconciliation Strategy on the College website.https://www.wcc.nsw.edu.au//09/our-reconciliation-strategy/ #IAmPartOfAChristCentredCommunity #IAmAnExtraordinaryLearner

14.01.2022 For the past few weeks our Primary students have been working on something very special to celebrate and acknowledge the important role grandparents and grandfriends play in our lives. Hundreds of letters, poems, cards and drawings left the College on Friday and are now on their way to our grandparents and grandfriends via Australia Post. We know they will be received with much love and affection, especially this year when we are unable to invite them onsite to visit our Primary students. Let all that you do be done in love. 1 Corinthians 16:14 #IAmPartOfAChristCentredCommunity

11.01.2022 This week our Year 10 students participated in their Back Off Incursions. For our Year 10 girls, Back Off is a total self-protection programme with a difference. During the incursion, the girls learnt to develop the ability to control the way they think in pressure settings, understand how an offender thinks in situations and to know the importance of always having a strategy. Our Year 10 boys incursion was designed specifically to address issues confronting young men in the new millennium and covered three key elements taking responsibility for yourself and your actions, life is all about choice and the importance of respect and self-discipline. Both very enlightening sessions that captivated and engaged our students. #IAmAnExtraordinaryLearner

Their project has been to form Rock Bands, select a pop song and learn their part on electric guitar, electric bass, drums, vocals, keyboard, or their major instruments. Once refined, their debut singles will be recorded. Learning to play an instrument and perform in an ensemble is a highly effective way for children to develop and master their enterprise skills. Today, we showed our respect for the Darug people and culture, as well as our commitment to ensu...ring a strong and lasting partnership, by creating a giant red handprint in the College Sports Centre. This creative ‘work’ was made up of over 1600 individual handprints crafted by each and every College student and staff member. #NAIDOC2020 #IAmLearningWisdomForLife

02.01.2022 Looking at objects under a microscope gives students a whole new perspective on everyday objects in their world. They may discover that something they thought was smooth is actually covered in little scratches. Or they may notice that something they thought was round actually has angles and straight edges. Recently 4 Teal looked at different materials through their microscopes, examining how individual fibres make up a particular piece of material. They discovered that materials that look similar to the naked eye are actually completely different when viewed through a microscope. What a fun activity that involved doing, seeing, thinking, questioning and discussing. #IAmAnExtraordinaryLearner

02.01.2022 During Semester One 2020, our Year 10 Scholars students undertook the Macquarie University Critical Thinking course, aimed at understanding the fundamentals of critical thinking and reasoning. The students utilised class time to manage their university workload, as well as spending some time out of school hours working on assessment tasks. The course involved weekly lectures and tasks, with content that was challenging, but manageable. The course not only gave students a taste of university education, but the opportunity to realise and challenge their capabilities. The results are in!
