25.01.2022 SAFETY BAR SQUAT The Safety Bar is a great Squat Variation and can be used for a variety of reasons Decrease Torque Loading through the Hips & Lumbar Spine. Increase Torque Loading through the Knee, Ankle and T Spine. ... An alternatively to a Back Squat due to Inability to hold a barbell due to lack of Shoulder Mobility or Wrist Injury As an alternative to a Front Squat due to lack of Shoulder or Thoracic mobility . The Safety Bar is significantly less demanding on the Hips and Lumbar Spine in comparison to the Back Squat. . For this reason it can be a great alternative to utilise in the early stages of Rehabilitation for a client returning from #lowerbackpain or #hippain . The curvature in the Safety Bar means the load is distributed relatively Anterior or Front Loaded to our centre of gravity which demands greater Ankle and T Spine mobility as we strive for an upright torso . Due to this, it creates similar adaptations to the Front Squat with greater torque loading through the Knee, Ankle & T Spine. . For this reason it can be a great squat variation to utilise for late stage rehabilitation of a Knee or Ankle Injury to load end range dorsiflexion and build tolerance through the knee. See more

25.01.2022 DISC BULGE REHAB . . The Reverse Hyperextension is a fantastic exercise to develop strength through the posterior chain (Hamstrings, Erectors, Glutes). . It can also be used as an early stage rehab exercise for a Lumbar Disc Bulge as it provides a decompressive effect on the eccentric phase (flexion), which allows space for the disc to heal.... . The concentric phase (extension) is great to engage the glutes however can sometimes be sensitive in the acute phases of lower back pain. To perform the exercise: . 1 Begin with a slightly rounded Thoracic Spine. . 2 Start with the heels together and slightly turned out (external rotation). . 3 Keeping the lower back flat against the pad, raise both heels towards the ceiling. . 4 Hold the squeeze at the top . Note: Ensure that you don’t hyper extend at the top of the rep or arch your lower back, keep the tension on the glutes and hamstrings . #osteopathy #reversehyper #discbulge #discrehab #lumbardisc #movement #rehab #mobility #stability #performance #assessment #exerciserehab #strengthtraining #williamslanding #melbourne

20.01.2022 FIX YOUR THRUST . . Today I want to talk about the relationship between CAUSE & EFFECT and we’re going to use the hip thrust and #lowerbackpain as an example. . Cause = Lumbar Hyperextension. ... . Outcome = Lower Back Pain (QL, LES Hypertonia, Lx. Facet Irritation). . Solution = Correct Movement | Loading Patterns. . Often in Physical Therapy were so determined to find the specific structure, or tissue that is responsible for an individuals pain that we miss a big piece of the puzzle..... . MOVEMENT PATTERNS . . How the individual actually executes or performs a SPECIFIC movement is more important than the exercise itself. . This cannot be assessed with conventional ROM testing, provocative tests, palpation etc. We need to get them to perform the SPECIFIC movement to identify how they are using their body. . There is little point in identifying the painful structure or tissue if we can’t identify the CAUSE factor and/ or MOVEMENT deficiency that has created the outcome or EFFECT. . Any Exercise has the ability to create a positive or negative outcome - The result lies within the execution and the dosage . 19.01.2022 EXERCISE PRESCRIPTION How you execute the movement, far outweighs the importance of the movement itself. . Without context - It is meaningless ... . Take for example a commonly prescribed exercise - The Bulgarian Split Squat. . We can manipulate a single movement into multiple variations which will all have slightly different physical adaptations. This is due to biomechanical differences in joint angles, levers and torque loading. . As a coach | therapist, having a sound knowledge and understand of biomechanics is paramount for achieving great results. . Whether the outcome is Rehab, Strength or Hypertrophy, these variables can be manipulated to either progress or regress your client appropriately. 18.01.2022 FIX YOUR DEADLIFT . . Part 3/3: The Tripod Foot . . A common breakdown we see in the Deadlift is the knees caving in as the bar ascends off the floor. ... This malfunction leads to a loss of stability and therefore force production and can often result in a missed lift. . There are a number of reasons this can happen, however the main two are: Foot Stability Hip Stability 1 Foot Stability: It is essential that the foot has adequate mobility to create what is referred to as the Tripod Foot. This position accentuates the arches of the foot and creates greater tension and stability through the entire lower extremity. Big Toe Little Toe Heel 2 Hip Stability: By completing STEP ONE we will create greater torque loading through the external rotators of our hip, most significantly the glute medius. This FUNCTION of this muscle is to resist Internal Rotation of the Femur (i.e. Knee Collapse) throughout the lift. . For greater proprioceptive feedback, we can place a mini band around the top of the knees to feel our glutes working . . However it is SUPER important that we first execute step 1 before worrying about step 2 if we can’t control what’s happening at the foot then the hip is doomed!. . #osteopathy #deadlift #movement #rehab #mobility #stability #performance #assessment #exerciserehab #strengthtraining #williamslanding #melbourne

14.01.2022 LEG PRESS | BACK PAIN . . Have you ever experienced Lower Back Pain when performing the leg press? . This is a common complaint I get from a lot of patients! But they can’t seem to figure out why... . Generally it is one of TWO things...... . 1 POOR HIP MOBILITY 2 GOING TOO DEEP . As you can see in reps 1 - 3 of this video there is no obvious issues, however in reps 4 - 6 and we start to see my #lowerback ROUND and tuck underneath. . This is commonly referred to as BUTT WINK . This occurs when the Hip Joint runs out of available range of motion and the Lumbar Spine compensates via Flexion to make up for the extra depth. You can do THREE things to avoid this.... . 1 Improve HIP MOBILITY - Specifically in FLEXION. . 2 Decrease RANGE OF MOTION - Stop at the point just prior to the butt wink. . 3 Use a WIDER STANCE - Allowing for greater range of motion. . #osteopathy #legpress #buttwink #movement #rehab #mobility #stability #performance #assessment #exerciserehab #strengthtraining #williamslanding #melbourne
