25.01.2022 Some of the children decided to make tea cups out of the clay which we are hoping will be strong enough to drink out of. They designed their cups first and then made them. Learning the technique of coil making helps the children to make a structure that is stronger. Between each coil the children scored and used slip to stick the coils together. The hardest part was making sure there were no gaps in the cup where water could escape.

23.01.2022 Have a look at our recently completed downstairs bathroom renovation. The works have transformed a very drab space into something far more pleasant for our children! We are very grateful for the community support provided by the Moreton Bay Regional Council to complete the works! Moreton Bay Regional Council

17.01.2022 Boys vs Girls.... Over the past few weeks, we have noticed some of the children playing games that either exclude the boys as a whole or exclude the girls. Last Tuesday, they discussed this play as a whole group. They wondered together how being left out would make you feel.... The children used words like: "It would make them feel sad." "Lonely." "Angry" "Frustrated." We talked about how these were bucket dipping things to say and do to our friends at Willmore. We discussed why they thought the boys or girls kept coming to their games. Someone said "Because they want to play with us." Another, "Yeah. but we just thought we'd give the boys a taste of their own medicine." We set the children a challenge. They boys had to do something bucket filling for the girls, and vice versa. Later, after our downstairs play, we came together to discuss what we did. We shared bucket filling stories. One of the boys said, "I'm going to make new signs up near my hideout that say, "Girls and boys can play here." Followed by one of the girls stating, "Me too, I'll put a sign near our hideout so the boys can come in if they want." Upstairs we read the story, "Friendship is like a see-saw." This was a great story explaining how to be a good friend. The children shared stories and examples of great things their friends had done to them and remembered many ideas to keep their friendship balanced. In the story, if one friend was sad and the other happy, then the friendship was 'unbalanced'. When the friends solved their problems together and were both happy, then their see-saw balanced again. We saw such beautiful bucket filling play after both of these discussions. How wonderful to see the children understanding how others were feeling and making changes to their play to be more inclusive. They way they were able to express their feelings shows a genuine understanding for themselves and others.

16.01.2022 We were very excited to be visited by Aunty Sharron Lindh this week who spoke with the children about what Australia was like a long time ago. She talked about how Australia was a beautiful land with no roads or cars or buildings. She described the aboriginals as inventors and said that they had invented many tools that are still used in some form today. The children played some clapping sticks. We then sang a song and pretended to be kangaroos and then emus. Overall, the experience with Sharron was wonderful. The children were so quiet and respectful as Sharron spoke and sang in her native language. It is our hope that the children really learn to appreciate the earth they are so lucky to live upon.

15.01.2022 The children are learning to respect and wonder about all aspects of their environment. This week we put two tea light candles at each table for lunch. We talked about how the candle was cold to start with, but that it will heat up. We watched the flame move and wondered how it could when there was no wind.

13.01.2022 A huge thank you to Boomerang Bags The Gap & Surrounds for their contribution of $500 to help us purchase our beautiful new rug. This rug was purchased as part of a wider initiative to reduce noise pollution and increase soft furnishings throughout the Kindy in consideration of students who may have hearing or sensory challenges. As you can see all of the kids are loving the new addition :)

13.01.2022 We have such a special community with so many willing to share their time and talents - here is one of our wonderful mums that came in to make some curtains. The kids loved watching and learning a new skill.

09.01.2022 We had lots of fantastic sharing sessions this week. We love hearing about the adventures in the children's lives and celebrate the special things that they bring in. It was exciting to hear so many interesting stories. Often the stories translate into play during the day. It gives us a small window into their lives outside of kindy.

03.01.2022 We are very excited to be a part of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden foundation. This program encourages the children to prepare a garden bed, decide on the best seasonal plants to grow, care for the plants, harvest the plants and then cook with what they have grown. Due to all of the amazing rain we have just had our plants look amazing and we will have our first harvest and cooking experience next week. The children drew the plants to help them to look closely at them. We are really excited and know that this program will see growing food as a pleasurable and rewarding activity.

03.01.2022 We are very excited to be celebrating 50 years at Willmore Kindergarten this year. To commemorate this important milestone we are creating a mural in George Willmore Park that will represent 50 years of children in the Hills. Our current children drew pictures of what they love about living in our community and these will be represented on the mural. On our return to kindy after the holidays the children will be adding their own flower to the bottom of the mural so that ea...ch child has had an opportunity to contribute. Our two wonderful artists are Kim and Rebecca who were also the artists for our first mural about bees on the facing wall. If you are driving past the park look at the side facing the stage for our latest work as it evolves. Our thanks go to Claud from the Moreton Bay Regional Council for her support of our project. To Councillor Matt Constance MBRC for our funding and to Bunnings at Keperra for the donation of paint and materials. Thankyou so very much. #lovecandk #mattconstance #moretonbayregionalcouncil #thehillsecho #thehillsdistrict #qecsn #bunningskeperra

02.01.2022 We invited the children to draw the garden. We have been so amazed by the growth since the rain. The children enjoyed recording what they could see. Drawing helps the children to target their gaze and look closely at things and they usually see things that they didn't know were there.
