24.01.2022 New year... new nose! Pugs, French Bulldogs, and other brachycephalic (flat faced) breeds don’t breathe as easily as their longer nosed friends. This is due to their nares (nostrils) being quite narrow, which in turn restricts the amount of air able to easily enter the nose and pass into the nasal cavity. They are also at risk of having an elongated soft palate (the soft part at the back of the mouth), which can partially block the entrance to the trachea (windpipe).... However, luckily for our friends like Jasper here, help is available. A little nip and tuck can make a huge difference to their breathing efforts and overall health. The picture below was taken part way through the surgery and shows what a difference opening up the nares can make. Have a chat to one of our friendly team if you’d like to find out more.
23.01.2022 To round out Vet Nurse Week, we'd love to showcase the beautiful Lisa. Lisa is one of our newer nurses, having left the corporate world to pursue her dream of working with animals. And aren't we glad she did! Lisa hit the ground running, and took to nursing like a duck to water. Lisa approaches every day with enthusiasm and a level head. When you combine this with her compassion, she has proven to be the perfect addition to the Willoughby team.
23.01.2022 Meet the Team Monday! To start the week, we'd love to formally introduce you to Caitlin, who most people will recognise from the front of house, where she works full time in Customer Service. Caitlin has loved animals for as long as she can remember. After working for 3 years at a small animal specialist hospital, Caitlin took a break to work in the travel industry. Luckily for us however, Caitlin’s passion and dedication to help animals brought her back! ... Caitlin enjoys being front of house as she’s able to chat to clients and meet their beloved pets. Caitlin has a dog, Cooper, and a cat, Lily, who she adores.
22.01.2022 We have recently seen a confirmed case of Feline Panleukopenia in a young kitten here at Willoughby Vet. This is a very serious disease where the cat is unable to produce any white blood cells, therefore cannot fight infection, and sadly often results in death. The recent case was a young, indoor kitten from the area, which most likely acquired the disease from local, infected stray cats. ... Feline Panleukopenia is highly contagious, however it can be prevented by ensuring your cat is up to date with vaccinations. Kittens require a series of 3 vaccinations by the age of 16 weeks, and adult cats require an annual vaccination. For more information, or to check when your cat is next due for their vaccination, call us on (02) 9958 8775.
22.01.2022 Just a friendly reminder from Willoughby Vet: As we are coming into school holidays we would like to remind our clients of our continuing COVID restrictions: - Only 4 people allowed in the waiting room at any one time (not including staff). If there are more than 4 people, please call us and we will tend to you outside.... - Only 1 person with their animal in the consult rooms - We politely ask not to bring your children with you to appointments if possible. We understand this isn't always possible and that's okay, but we are trying to reduce the number of people in the clinic where we can. Thank you for your understanding, and stay safe these school holidays! :)

21.01.2022 As part of Vet Nurse Week, we are showcasing some of our nurse superstars, and today we'd like to introduce you to the gorgeous Sylvi! Sylvi has been with us for a little over a year, having completed animal studies at Taronga Zoo before moving into Veterinary nursing. She started as a work experience student here at Willoughby Vet and is now one of our lovely "full timers". She loves all animals big and small but has a particular soft spot for dogs just like her chihuahua Sk...yla. Sylvi has such a positive attitude, and always works hard to ensure animals are not stressed whilst in hospital.
21.01.2022 New Years Eve might be just around the corner, but not all of our furry friends share our excitement - especially when it comes to the fireworks. Dogs and cats can easily become scared, and this can result in escape attempts and injury. Below are a few tips to help your pet this New Years Eve.
20.01.2022 Happy Halloween! Don’t let a treat turn into a trick! Remember to keep any chocolate away from your furry friends, as chocolate is toxic to dogs. Instead, you could try some creepy carrot, petrified pumpkin or spooky chicken as a safe Halloween alternative.
20.01.2022 The next few days are forecast to be HOT HOT HOT! While we might be happy to shed a few layers and enjoy the warmth of Summer, it’s important to make sure our pets are safe during these high temperatures too. Heatstroke in animals is very real and very dangerous. See the attached pic for a few do’s and don’ts to consider when the mercury rises. And as always, if you have any concerns give us a call and we’ll do our best to help.

07.01.2022 In light of the recent increase in COVID-19 cases on the Northern Beaches, we would like to reiterate the advice from NSW Health, which urges all residents in the Northern Beaches to stay at home. If you live in these areas and were planning an appointment within the next 3 days, please call the clinic on (02) 9958 8775 to either reschedule or ask for advice. 06.01.2022 Further to our post yesterday about Vet Nurse Week, we'd love to showcase some of our fabulous nurses here throughout the week. Most clients would recognise the lovely Rachel. Rachel has been around Willoughby Vet Hospital from the age of 7, when she used to bring her 2 miniature schnauzers in to see Dr. Peter! Since then, Rachel has turned her love of animals into a career, having studied her Certificate II; Animal Studies and Certificate IV; Veterinary Nursing whilst workin...g full time as a nurse. In 2018 she completed a Bachelor of Animal and Veterinary Bioscience majoring in Animal Health and Disease at the University of Sydney. The following year, she studied Master of Animal Science as a distant student through Charles Sturt University, and at the end of 2019 she received an offer for her dream degree, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Rachel is a fabulous nurse with a wealth of experience, and we know she'll be an amazing Vet in the not-too-distant future.
