10.01.2022 Invest in loss...the bigger the loss, the bigger the gain

09.01.2022 "Being pushed by Professor was a very different thing. He gave me light touches while neutralizing in push hands that sent me flying but I do not consider those... as an example of his push. When he pushed for the film, people went flying back and could not get their legs under them and I had that experience also, but one time he touched me was very different. I sensed him settle in, and I felt a kind of electricity, a charge at the point where my arm was being lightly touched, where it was in physical contact with his hands. And then I just took off. It felt like I was moving in slow motion. My ears worked, but sound had a distant, echoing quality, like being underwater. He held my wrist as I went and so my arm straightened, like a slack rope held firmly on one end. When my arm ran out of slack, it was like a rope pulled taut. At that instant the slow motion feeling vanished and now I was aware that I was traveling at what felt like sixty miles an hour at an up angle of forty-five degrees. My arm took the shock of the push and my whole body shook violently. Then, finally, my hearing returned to normal. This was my experience of Professors push. Soft, yet very, very powerful. His contact with my arm was barely perceptible, the push was electric, and irresistible." - Sifu Bill Phillips, Excerpt from In The Presence Of Cheng Man Ching: My Life And Lessons With The Master Of Five Excellences. 06.01.2022 "I always regret my lack of perseverance when young. I began to practice marital arts to strengthen my frail body but would invariably stop as soon as I felt th...e slightest bit better. Finally, thirty-nine years ago, bedridden with tuberculosis, I resolved to begin practicing and never stop againI practiced morning and night to ensure continuity and perseverance-though I was busy with teaching commitments and extracurricular actives. Every morning I practiced the form before I washed or ate and at night I went through one round before I slept. I made good progress and this routine soon developed into a daily habit. My philosophy was to joyfully assist others regardless of the personal sacrifice involved. How could I expect to benefit humanity if I lacked the perseverance to practice a few minutes every day to remain healthy?" - Cheng Man Ching, Master Cheng's New Method of Tai Chi Chuan Self-Cultivation, trans. 05.01.2022 When discussing the martial arts of Wudang Mountains, the most well known name is that of Xu Benshan, the abbot of the temples in the early 20th century. Howeve...r the current popularity of these sacred mountains as the center of taoist martial arts was established by two persons: You Xuande and Zhong Yunlong. Both were young guys interested in martial arts when they entered Zixiao Palace in mid-1980s. You was a security guard at first but became a monk soon after. You and Zhong learnt at first from two monks: internal methods from Zhu Chengde, and martial arts from Guo Gaoyi; Guo was the head coach at the taoist martial arts academy located in the Palace, and taught many disciples and students there, both monks and laymen. When Guo left Wudang in 1989 Zhong Yunlong became the head of the academy. I saw the photo of Master Guo in "Pictorial China" magazine around 1983, a short article introducing the renaissance of martial arts in the Wudang was published there. Not long before I had watched "Wudang" - the movie that inspirated me to travel to China and Wudang. I had hoped to meet Guo but unfortunately when I arrived in Zixiao in July 1991 he had already moved to Shennongjia, to an area closed to foreigners. He passed away in 1996. I'm not sure if he would be happy with his legacy and what Wudang has become, perhaps it does not matter in the great scheme of things. In this rare video, one of very few left of Guo Gaoyi, he demonstrates Wudang Taiyi Xuanmen Sword. Very fit for a man in his mid 80s.

I went to study at 211 Canal St. 3 or 4 times a week, I first studied form, then push hands, sword form and fencing, I made it my business to fence as much as possible with Professor and/or one of the first 6 instructors. I attended all of his lectures on Taoism, and any on painting, calligraphy or poetry. I asked permission to take photos pretty soon after I started and was pleased to become his official photographer and cinematographer (both were my profession), I was thereby given access to many other facets of Cheng Man Ching's life. I believe it was in 1972 that he undertook to give special classes that included his first six students, plus the second seven, chosen to be certified as teachers. We underwent intensive training in solo form and sword form and we attended all push hands and fencing classes. I became an instructor and continued to study with him until his death in 1975. - Ken Van Sickle Joining Zoom The sessions are every Wednesday at 8am PDT / 11am EDT / 4pm BST / 5pm CET / 11pm CST.
