25.01.2022 Extension of Greater Devonport Fruit Fly Control Area Control, surveillance and eradication activities are continuing on Flinders Island and in Greater Devonpo...rt following the detection of fruit fly in January 2018. This ongoing surveillance has detected suspected fruit fly larvae at a property inside the eastern boundary of the Greater Devonport Control Area. The Greater Devonport Control Area boundary has now been extended in accordance with national protocols (see attached map). Wherever you live you should be aware of the Control Areas and minimise any movement of possible fruit fly during this time. Please remain vigilant and report any possible fruit fly by contacting Biosecurity Tasmania on 6165 3774. For the latest information and advice, please visit www.dpipwe.tas.gov.au/fruitfly

24.01.2022 VICTORIA Cross hero Cameron Bairds last letter written within two weeks of being killed in action has been released by his family for the first time. The handw...ritten letter to Sydney school student Campbell Byrd provides a sincere and open insight into Corporal Bairds work in Afghanistan just before his tragic death in 2013. To Campbell, My name is Cameron and I am 32 years old. I am writing this letter in response to the letter I received from you. Firstly I must say that you have excellent handwriting, its so much better than mine, so I hope you can understand my writing. Sometimes my job is difficult but I have good reasons to do it. Making the world a safer place for others is one reason. I think we are very lucky in Australia, we are safe and can live our lives as we wish. Being away from family and friends is difficult but I have been in the Army for over 13 years and have become accustomed to being away. In your letter you asked some questions, I would like to try and answer them for you. 1. What exactly do I do? I am a team commander in an assault platoon. I have a 6 man team within the platoon. My role as a team commander is to lead my team when on missions and during training. We do many different missions in Afghanistan but the main focus is providing security to the community and advising the Afghan police and army how to provide security within their job. I have been to Afghanistan a number of times and they are getting better and better each time I come back. My main role over here is war fighting. The enemy use Afghanistan as a place to harbour their jihad holy war. This enemy kills and harasses the local population, so we try and help and they fight us. War is very complicated and hard to explain. I hope this answers your question. 2. What rank are you? Im a corporal, and will be promoted to Sergeant at the end of the year. 3. Have I always wanted to be in the Army? Simple answer is No. As you grow older things change in your life, so you have to adjust. When I was 12 years old I wanted to be a footballer or a sportsman, but I wasnt good enough to be professional. Because the Army is physical and you work outdoors I thought it would be good to join. Since joining I have been really happy with it. I have travelled a lot around Australia training and around the world on Operations. And I have heaps of good mates I work with. Thank you so much for writing, it was great to hear from you. Remember to stay in school and enjoy it while you are there, because when you get older you have more responsibility and less time to play with your friends. Always try your best in whatever you do, and always be happy in your life. Enjoy and have fun. Regards, Cameron Source - Newscorp

12.01.2022 Wilmot residents cant bring fruit out of Devonport. For now it might pay to fruit shop in Ulverstone. this is important. Fruit fly can and have wiped out crops on the mainland and Bio security really need to contain it. It is not a suspected case, its a confirmed case. We have to help by doing what we can not to make the situation complicated.

12.01.2022 Earlier there was a post put up about the fruit exclusion zone and being able to take fruit out of it. After some clarification this morning those living out side the exclusion zone can bring fruit from fruit and veg shops and supermarkets as they have been cleared. How ever any fruit given to you or purchased from a private residence has to stay with in the exclusion zone. Any further information can be accessed via the bio security Tasmania web page. there is also a good story about it at following link

12.01.2022 Absolutely stunning footage from Ben Lomond "north cliff face" thanks to Fergus Gregory. The magnificent mountain of Ben Lomond with its imposing and precipitou...s cliffs is visible over much of the northern midlands of Tasmania. The plateau is roughly 14 kilometres in length, 6 kilometres wide and is in excess of 1300 metres in height. A summit on the plateau named Legges Tor is the second highest point in Tasmania (1572 metres). The Ben Lomond National Park is invaluable for the conservation of the flora communities and species diversity of Tasmanias alpine areas. The area consists of an outstanding variety of glacial and periglacial features which are considered of national significance. #Tasmania You can also follow Fergus via his instagram and YouTube accounts: www.instagram.com/fergtas https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCIA4WCpqJ_R9Feml05-STrw

07.01.2022 Today we are very excited to introduce our new dual purpose Community Armed Response Emergency vehicle. A sister vehicle to our well known Bearcat, the dual fun...ctionality of our new CARE BEAR will allow it to be used in a wide range of scenarios from community expos to armed sieges. Vital in every policing situation, a servery hatch at the side allows for the provision of coffee and donuts. With the engaging appearance of an ice-cream van to camouflage its military-standard armour, when the going gets tough so does the CARE BEAR. Fortified properties and explosive devices are no match for the 12-tonne CARE BEAR. It can plough through brick walls like butter. And the state-of-the art suspension means that not even a category 4 explosion will spill a drip of coffee or displace a granule of cinnamon, a true embodiment of the CARE BEAR spirit. See more

03.01.2022 Fruit Fly Detection - Update 20 February 2018 Ongoing surveillance activities as part of the fruit fly response have trapped a total of five adult fruit flies a...s well as larvae in fruit in a George Town backyard orchard. Following the detection of a single adult fly last week in the Statewide surveillance trap monitoring program, the Department immediately implemented an intensive surveillance program, including inspection of fallen fruit and the placement of additional traps around the detection site. This monitoring has identified four additional fruit flies and larvae which indicates there is an active population in the vicinity of this site. Biosecurity Tasmania have already begun implementing control measures at the site and will be talking directly to surrounding landholders about the detection, what is being undertaken and how they can assist the work. Because of the detection, the Control Area in the north of the State is now be required to be increased from the current area to include the northern coastal area to Beechford and Lefroy, Rowella, Sidmouth and to Kimberley in the South. The Department is liaising directly with growers in the new Control Area to keep them informed of the latest information and identify measures to minimise impacts on them. The same host-produce movement restrictions already in place will apply to the new control area. Reports of fruit fly can be made by contacting Biosecurity Tasmania on 6165 3774.
