25.01.2022 Film screening this Saturday at the Humanist House Saturday, 13 of July 2019 at 1:30 pm Humanist House, 10 Shepherd Street, Chippendale (along Broadway... The beginning of the end of nuclear weapons On the 7th of July 2017, 122 countries voted in favour of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. Countries that dont have nuclear weapons, but live under their threat, voted for a ban. Without the knowledge of most of their citizens, the governments of the worlds nuclear powers didnt vote, and yet the ban went ahead. Something new is happening. This documentary about efforts to bring a nuclear weapon ban treaty into international law and the role of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, ICAN, is told through the voices of leading activists from several different organizations and countries together with the president of the negotiating conference. The film is 59 minutes long and takes the viewer through a brief history of the bomb and the anti-nuclear activism that has pushed to eliminate them ever since their invention. It moves into a consideration of the humanitarian initiative that successfully challenged the dominant security narrative and the historic steps taken since 2010 to turn the treaty from a dream into a reality.

24.01.2022 The Womens International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF, NSW) has been honoured to have Pat - a very fine and inspirational and extraordinary leader. We have marched together for many years during the International Womens Day, Palm Sunday for Refugees and March against the Invasion on Iraq and other community actions for peace. Pat stood up for womens right, calling for an end to violence against women and putting womens role in peace building as one of the keys in a...ttaining long and lasting peace. The most dear to her heart was solidarity work with the Aboriginal People of Australia. At WILPF meetings as well as in community actions for the Aboriginal Peoples struggle Pat was always there. Pat has been doing letter writing to the members of the Parliament to contribute to the many voices calling for social justice for the Aboriginal Peoples. Pat leaves a great legacy to the young generation of peace activists - that is valuing of what might appear to be a small contribution to building a culture of peace because every small step leads to winning a bright future for humankind and the whole universe. Rest in Peace Pat!

23.01.2022 Did you know that WILPF had another name when it was created? Our founding name was the International Committee of Women for Permanent Peace. 100 years ago, we... became the Womens International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) at our 2nd congress in 1919 that took place in Zurich. This weekend, WILPF in partnership with other peace organisations, is hosting a special event in Zurich to celebrate the 137 women who created WILPF to find sustainable solutions for peace. If you are in Switzerland, join us! https://wilpf.org/women-vote-peace-remembering-100-years-o/

03.01.2022 BREAKING: Australian Local Government Association calls on Federal Government to join nuclear weapon ban treaty! ---> At its National General Assembly in Canber...ra today the Australian Local Government Association unanimously passed a motion calling on Australia to sign and ratify the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. The motion was moved by Darebin City Council (VIC) and seconded by the City of Ryde (NSW). Fremantle (WA), Mt Isa (QLD), Randwick (NSW), Byron Shire (NSW), City of West Torrens (WA), Inner West (NSW), Newcastle (NSW) and the City of Yarra (VIC) also backed it ahead of the conference. The push for the national body to endorse the Treaty comes after 35 Australian councils have publicly declared their support for it, along with over 400 cities worldwide. ALGA represents the 537 councils across Australia. The Treaty is the first to comprehensively outlaw the production, stockpiling, transfer, hosting, use, threat of use of nuclear weapons, as well as assistance with any of the prohibited acts. With 86 signatories and 54 states parties currently, the Treaty entered into force in January this year. Australia has not yet signed or ratified the agreement, although the Australian Labor Party has committed in policy to do so in government. Cr Louise Steer of Inner West Council said It’s fantastic how many councils are on board with the nuclear ban treaty and now its national local government policy. In only a few years, ICAN has changed the way people think about nuclear weapons. ICAN campaigner Jemila Rushton said By endorsing the Treaty, the voice of local government has made a powerful contribution to the push for Australia to join the ban, a critical step towards a nuclear weapon free world. The Australian Government is currently part of the problem, but the Treaty provides an opportunity for us to become part of the solution, in line with our record of joining the bans on other inhumane and immoral weapons. Delene Cuddihy, a member of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, Australia, said The risk of nuclear weapons use, whether by accident or design, is growing. All levels of government have a responsibility to protect their citizens from this grave threat. We congratulate the members of the ALGA for their courage in passing this motion which will be one more step towards ridding the world of these weapons of mass destruction whose use could end humanity as we know it. A huge thank you to all of the councillors that are working for Australia to join the ban.
