22.01.2022 Deciding where to put your savings comes down to matching up what you want from an investment with what it can do for you. What is a listed investment company (...LIC)? It is an investment listed on a stock exchange that is incorporated as a company. Can a LIC be a regular passive source of income? Can LICs be simpler and more tax-effective as an SMSF? Are LICs influenced by inflows or outflows of capital? Can a LIC ever be forced to sell its investments? How do they compare to a managed fund? What are your most burning investor questions? Ask Kate Thorley, CEO of Wilson Asset Management tomorrow at 12pm. 13.01.2022 The strong market rebound has faced a stress test in recent trading sessions as coronavirus cases have risen with the reopening of global economies. Cases may be approximately two weeks from their peak and we expect that the fear of a return to lockdown measures will continue to drive market movements in the short term. The major volatility indexes are yet to break from their slumber and bond yields remain stable. While we believe coronavirus cases will be normalised and the extraordinary policy settings will remain the focus, the impact of a return to lockdown would be significant despite triggering additional fiscal and monetary support. We are therefore focused on indications of how markets, governments and central banks will respond to the stress test. Subscribe to receive our weekly market updates https://bit.ly/2V0Fy4r
13.01.2022 An element of WAM Leaders' investment process is to position the portfolio while focusing on macroeconomics in order to identify an edge and invest in the opportunities these themes present. Macroeconomic analysis is especially important as large-cap Australian companies are directly influenced by macroeconomic drivers such as interest rates, foreign exchange, credit spreads and economic data. The market fall which saw the Dow Jones Industrial Average Indexs greatest one-da...y fall since March last Thursday was an event we believe to have been caused by various macroeconomic themes. In the two weeks leading up to the market sell-off, demand for the New York Federal Reserves Repurchase Agreements, or repos, spiked. Repos are typically used by entities to raise short-term capital and are bought and sold by the Federal Reserve as a tool to regulate the supply of money. Such rise in demand for repos is usually followed by a spike in volatility in the equity market. But what followed was an upward trend in the equity market despite the rise in CBOE Volatility Index, followed by a savage fall in the equity market as entities quickly tried to reduce their exposure to the market. 08.01.2022 The coronavirus curve has flattened globally, despite notable laggards such as the UK, and a flow of economic data is demonstrating the potential for a faster and stronger recovery than previously anticipated. In Australia for example, research from the Commonwealth Bank of Australia derived from credit and debit card spend data showed an increase in spending on services, personal care, clothing, household furnishing, retail, non-retail and recreation since April. Positive da...ta, combined with strong fiscal and monetary stimulus and the absence of asset bubbles or cyclical excess, are leading to revisions of the economic outlook prepared using March and April data. The picture has improved significantly however the threat of a second wave of coronavirus infections and the rising tension between the worlds two largest economies provide strong reasons for caution. 07.01.2022 Chinas gross domestic product increased 3.2% in the June quarter and in a further sign of strength the nation reported on Wednesday it had imported 101.6 million tonnes of iron ore in June, its second greatest monthly total in history. The increase in demand for iron ore from Chinese steel makers sent the commodity's price to its highest levels in almost a year. The soaring iron ore price has so far led to a rally in WAM Leaders holdings BHP Group, Rio Tinto and Fortescue Metals Group, which reached a record share price on Tuesday. We positioned the WAM Leaders portfolio to benefit from the increase in Chinese economic activity following largely unreported government stimulus signals. 03.01.2022 Last week, the Australian dollar rose above USD0.70 for the first time since January, surging more than 20% against the US dollar from its lowest level in 18 years on March 17, as the risk currency was sold off amid heightened volatility. The rise in the Australian dollar can be attributed to the Reserve Bank of Australias firm stance against negative rates, the reopening of pockets of the Australian economy as coronavirus cases decline and the resilience of Australian commo...dity prices, in particular the price of iron ore. In addition, the US dollar has been diminished by negative US interest rates, contributing to the rise in our domestic currency. While the Australian dollar seems to be on a strong foothold for now, caution is warranted over continuing risks, including the escalation of geopolitical tensions between China and the US. 01.01.2022 Simon and Garfunkels Bridge over Troubled Water 1970 song provides a suitable anecdote to the current economic picture. The unprecedented government and central bank support has essentially bought time for economies to reopen, avoiding disastrous effects in the interim. However, we are approaching the end of the bridge, and economies will need to fire in the third and fourth quarters of this calendar year to avoid disappointing optimistic equity markets. If this is achieve...d, sector rotation between cyclicals and defensives will be a tradeable dynamic over the short-term. Observable risks to the wider economy remain; geopolitical tension between China and the US continues to escalate while the resurgence of coronavirus remains a critical threat.
