08.01.2022 On Sat night I jumped in the ring to have my first ever boxing match. This post is not to gloat about that, instead it’s about highlighting the exhilaration we can experience from challenging ourselves and going beyond our comfort zones. I’d wanted to do this for over a year and Slavko (my coach) wanted me to wait until I was ready. A month ago we had a date confirmed, 30th March. Things suddenly became very real and came into sharp focus. Training stepped up a gear (I compl...eted 12 sessions in the last 6 days alone). The emotions were up and down, at times I would feel physically sick at the thought of doing this yet I knew I was going to be doing it regardless. On the day of the fight, the hours started to disappear in the lead up and then I was on my way courtesy of Uber to Fortitude Valley in Brisbane. After six amateur fights it was announced there would be a five minute break before the next fight...which was mine! Waiting for that five minutes in the change room felt disproportionately long and then I was walking into the ring, facing off against my opponent whilst the referee gave us final instructions. Part of me still couldn’t believe this was about to happen. Quite strange to be looking at someone who is about to be attempting to hit you hard and vice versa. Once the bell rang, the boxing was actually the easier part (and far more enjoyable). The major challenge was dealing with the ups and downs of emotions in the month, weeks, hours and minutes prior to to the event. But I tell you what, I certainly feel stronger for having gone through the process, committing to the training and putting myself out of my comfort zone! Of course boxing isn’t for everyone, but one thing I would ask everyone to do is think about when was the last time they truly stepped out of their comfort zone in a big way? Because when you do, deal with and move through the fears that may come with that, you feel more alive! A big thank you to Kimberley Williamson my coaches Slavko and Phil Leaga, and my friends. A win, a trophy and home to loved ones.
