25.01.2022 Today was the 5th day in the 16 days of activism against violence against women. It was also the last day of asbestos awareness month. We posted on facebook abo...ut both. We noticed that on the asbestos awareness post, nobody commented along the lines of "silica dust is also a toxic hazard in the workplace", or "people can die from trip hazards too". Nobody felt the need to minimise the pain of victims of asbestosis. Nobody felt offended that we were taking a moment to focus on one particular hazard that disproportionately impacts male workers. If we had seen any, we would have called such comments out for being ridiculous nonsense, because asbestos is a deadly hazard affecting union members in Australian workplaces. If your response to hearing about the alarming rates of gendered violence is to feel like you are being targeted for your behaviour - to feel like the liberation of some union members is oppressive to you - then maybe you need to reflect on why that is. Because gendered violence is a deadly hazard affecting union members in Australian workplaces.

12.01.2022 Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The ETU condemns all forms of violence against women. Violence and harassment can ...happen anywhere, including at work. Since 2015, Unions have campaigned together to give universal access to paid family violence leave to all workers. We were successful in getting 5 days of unpaid family violence leave, but now we want PAID family and domestic violence leave to be included in the national employment standards. Having financial independence and support is vital for many people experiencing domestic abuse. In addition, on an international scale, the ETU supports the ILO Convention 190. This is an international convention that recognises that domestic violence can affect employment and health and safety. It states that governments, as well as employers’ and workers’ organizations can help to recognize, respond to and address the impacts of domestic violence. It also recognises the role that collective bargaining, at all levels, can play to mitigate the impact of domestic violence in the world of work. We want the Australian government to ratify this convention. Speak up if you see violence against women.

11.01.2022 APPRENTICE DELEGATE RAVEN IS CHIP OFF FAMILY BLOCK Sydney Trains apprentice delegate Raven Maris comes from a long line of industrial workers and trade unionist...s in her home country Canada. The 33-year-old travelled 14,000 kilometres to settle in Australia which, she says, is ‘the best country in the world’. ‘My father Walter was an electrician and a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. My uncle was active in the steelworkers union. ‘Coming from overseas, I can see the great conditions built by Australian unionists. The minimum wage here is close to $20 an hour. In Canada it’s just $14 per hour, but the cost of living is the same. ‘I think Australian workers need to be vigilant about maintaining our rights and entitlements. That’s why I want to be more active in my union the ETU.’ Raven applied for several electrical apprenticeships, unsuccessfully, before enrolling in a Sydney Trains pre-apprenticeship course for women. ‘Perhaps my age and gender counted against me, but that wasn’t an issue with Sydney Trains. The pre-apprenticeship course gave me the confidence to apply for a position. I was thrilled to get a start.’ Raven said she’s been welcomed by her workmates at Gosford Network Base. ‘They don’t treat me any differently, which is exactly as it should be. I’m expected to do the same work to the same standards.’ As an ETU apprentice delegate, Raven is on hand to support more than 100 electrical apprentices across the Sydney Trains network. Welcome aboard, Raven Maris!
