23.01.2022 Everything you want is on the other side of fear. - Jack Canfield . No idea how I came across this quote, but it stuck with me while I was travelling throughout 2018. . Whenever I'd get a sense of fear, of hesitation, I'd stop and examine what else was going through my mind.... . What I noticed is that often, when thinking about the things I really wanted to do, those big goals, those once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, was same time I'd be hit with a wave of fear. . So I used it as a guide. . If I was fearful about something in the future, I took it as a sign I was heading in the right direction. If I was fearful about something in the here & now, I was probably about to do something really stupid! . . ---------- Fear is something we’ve all faced and will face again. While we may not have the choice to feel fear, we can choose how we respond to it. . 20.01.2022 It starts and ends with the nose (if we're breathing correctly). . When we inhale, air enters the nose and passes down into our lungs. Oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged and then we exhale the air out through the nose. . This is cycle is repeated between 20,000 to 40,000 times per day in a process that we largely take for granted.... . Imagine the impact of doing something that often, incorrectly? . Now imagine the impact on your health when you do it correctly, optimally, efficiently? . Poor breathing can cause profound, long-lasting damage to our bodies including: > Fatigue - due to using the wrong muscles to breathe (think of it like walking on your hands all day) and not getting enough O2 into our cells (so we're literally lowering our energy output) > Digestion problems - due to poor diaphragm activation not massaging our internal organs > High blood pressure & heart rate - due to our body being in a continual, low-level of stress > Lowered immune response - due to decreased lymphocyte counts as a result of chronic stress > Poor concentration, nervousness and anxiety - due to our #SympatheticNervousSystem being continually on, making us highly reactive > And much more... . 16.01.2022 "There is preliminary evidence that vagus nerve stimulation is a promising add-on treatment for treatment-refractory depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, and inflammatory bowel disease. Treatments that target the vagus nerve increase the vagal tone and inhibit cytokine production." Here's 3 ways to stimulate the vagus nerve: 1) Cold exposure (aim for below 16-17C) 2) Deep, slow breathing (aim for a rate of 5-6 breaths per minute)... 3) Singing, humming, chanting or even gargling! 15.01.2022 You know things are serious when you get a logo. . Here’s what my business logo means to me: . The two right angled triangles represent our lungs, our respiratory system; the foundation of our overall health and the key to unlocking our full potential.... The line that bisects the triangles, together with the triangle, is the elemental symbol for air. . To me it also symbolises the connectedness between the systems in our body, in particular the autonomic nervous system, and how we are able to influence it via how we breathe. The red and blue colours serve two meanings. 1) Oxygenated (red) and deoxygenated (blue) blood that pumps through the arteries, veins and capillaries that make up our circulatory system. 2) Hot and cold, but more accurately, the stress, the contrast that life requires to build our resilience . . 12.01.2022 It’s not about anyone else. It’s about you, your body an about tuning into your inner self. Our body knows what it needs if only we listen to it. But, it can be hard to hear amongst all the other ‘noises’, which is where I find an ice bath/cold water so beneficial... it instantly shuts down that extra noise and puts you right into the present moment. 07.01.2022 Oooooooohmmm . Activating your vocal cords and throat muscles by humming (or singing), stimulates your vagus nerve. . And so does cold exposure!... . Not only is the #VagusNerve the longest nerve in the body and passes through all our major organs, but it’s also: . > A big player in our #ParasympatheticNervousSystem > One of the communication channels of the #GutBrainAxis > Able to help fight #Inflammation in the body (especially things like #InflammatoryBowelDisease) > Important in helping build stress resilience > Shown promising results in helping to treat #Depression and #PTSD (which is awesome) .
