24.01.2022 Having difficulty understanding people with masks?? Deaf Victoria have developed these graphics which you can download to your phone or print out.

22.01.2022 A news feature from 10 News with Cate Dunn from Deaf Victoria. Make sure you turn the captions on.

21.01.2022 Ha ha! Dog's need to lipread too!

21.01.2022 You might not realise this, but masks have made it especially hard for the Deaf community to read people during COVID. Expression Australia have kindly given us some basic Auslan signs we all should learn

21.01.2022 EDIT: This story will be on Ten News TODAY (Wednesday September 2) on various bulletins during the day and evening. So if you see it, let us know what you think... of it! All in a day's work: Deaf Victoria staff Catherine and Maxine teamed up with Stef Linder from Expression Australia earlier today to film an interview with 10 News First Melbourne. We shared our thoughts about information and access during the pandemic, news in Auslan and our hopes for the future. The interview will air later this week on 10 Melbourne. We'll keep you posted and hope you can tune in from home! It's wonderful to see media outlets interested in talking directly with deaf people so we can share our stories! Thanks Channel 10! #Auslan #Access #NothingAboutUsWithoutUs #News

20.01.2022 Meet the Deaf Victoria Team! We may have been a little quiet lately but your Deaf Victoria board and staff are still busy behind the scenes! We have been workin...g and having board meetings from our homes during these COVID-19 times to make sure our DHHS funded individual advocacy service and four large projects keep running. We will provide more updates on our work in the coming weeks and how you can get involved. In the meantime, if you'd like to know more about your board and staff, please have a look at the Deaf Victoria website as we have recently updated our About Us page: https://www.deafvictoria.org.au/board-staff/ Stay safe and well out there (or at home) Deaf Community! 20.01.2022 This is a great pictorial explanation of all the extra's people with a hearing loss have to live with.............. It was created by Mama Hu Hears, who says: "I’ve grown and transformed my listening of disability and hearing loss over the years. Anyone will tell you that I don’t often choose to let it define me but I also do not deny the invisible weight on my shoulders. Here are just a few of the unseen extras that go with living a life with hearing loss. Each of these can drain our mental energy from worry, coordinating, practicing, looking for, asking for repetition, etc. It's no wonder we need sound/hearing breaks and extra time for self-care!"

18.01.2022 My Uncle in the UK created this cartoon for me when I told him I was looking for material to put in the Wimmera Hearing Society Newsletter - in 1996! With our current situation of having to wear face masks, it's brilliantly apt. Hold in there fellow lip-readers - hope your family and friends are lowering their masks to talk to you.

18.01.2022 A couple of weeks ago, Deaf Victoria hosted a live-streamed forum about the Disability Royal Commission which was facilitated by Jen Byth and joined by panellis...ts Alex Jones from the DRC, Mark Sandon from AMIDA and Catherine Dunn from Deaf Victoria. Deaf and hard of hearing people were invited to ask questions during the livestream through Facebook or Zoom. The engagement during the event was fantastic to see!! We've decided to do another livestream event, following on from the DRC event where Sherrie and Catherine will be talking about the DRC submission process - what is involved, who to contact, what your options are, and what support you can receive. We'll be going LIVE on Friday 21st August (TOMORROW!!) at 4PM. You'll have an opportunity to ask questions about the submission process through Facebook. If you would like to have access to the Zoom link, please email Sherrie at [email protected] or comment here. If you have any questions and wish to stay anonymous, there are a couple of options: - SMS or send a video to 0431 476 721 - Email Catherine at [email protected] - Send a private message to us through this page. The livestream will be interpreted into English with live captions. This project is funded by the Victorian Department of Health & Human Services To get a notification for when we go live, click on this link: https://www.facebook.com/deafvictoria/posts/3526560070711388 Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow afternoon!

12.01.2022 For a number of years, the Wimmera Hearing Society ran a Family Camp in the Grampians for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children and their families - a wonderful and important opportunity 'to be together'. Lots of valuable information was shared, and many friendships were forged.

01.01.2022 "I am totally reliant on lip-reading when communicating with people."

01.01.2022 More accessibility

01.01.2022 We at the Wimmera Hearing Society have also been trying to come up with some badges and cards to help during these mask-wearing days! Feel free to pop into the office and have a chat with Sue.
