24.01.2022 Wimmera CMA has just finished collating spring 2020 data for the northern and southern Wimmera cropland management transects. Since 2006 the CMA has been collecting data to capture trends in land management, which helps us with planning future research and ag programs to support Wimmera farmers. We did our monitoring in early November and saw crops with high yield potential that are now being harvested, plus green pastures and high levels of hay production.... Oh and don't forget the scenery - Mt Arapiles would have to be one of Australia's most photographed farming backdrops #Wimmerafarming #farmingsystems #Wimmera #MtArapiles #crops #Wimmeracrops #agresearch #Landcare

24.01.2022 We are excited about the Wimmera Biodiversity Seminar's webinar this Thursday featuring platypus researcher Josh Griffiths. Josh used eDNA technology for platypus research in Australia for the first time in Wimmera surveys back in 2015. Since then the technology has developed considerably and is an important part of Wimmera waterway research for platypus and fish monitoring. Register via the links below to tune into this fantastic conversation

22.01.2022 Hello there! We have to say we've got an extra soft spot for the Peron's Tree Frog which was only discovered to be in the Wimmera about five years ago. This photo by Tim Mintern highlights the distinguishing feature of the frog - the vertical line through the eye which gives its pupil a cross-shaped appearance. Another distinguishing feature is its maniacal cackle which increases in loudness. We love when Wimmera people share their Peron's Tree Frog sightings - so far th...ey've been recorded in Burnt Creek, around Horsham, Mackenzie Creek area and Dimboola. Do you have one in your backyard? Let us know and also report it to Frog ID for #FrogIDWeek #Australianfrogs #FrogIDweek #Wimmerafrogs #peronstreefrog #frogs #nature #citizenscience

21.01.2022 Record numbers of silver perch have been released into the Wimmera river.

21.01.2022 Where were you? This week we reflect on some of the worst floods in Victoria’s history 10 years on. In 2011 La Niña weather conditions saw the highest January r...ainfall totals ever recorded for the state, resulting in significant widespread flooding in the Wimmera, the Mallee and other parts of the Victoria. 20.01.2022 Sound on!! This is fabulous, thanks Mallee Catchment Management Authority for sharing The Wimmera is home to the endangered Growling Grass Frog and you can help track where they are by using the Frog ID app. It's good practice for the official FROG ID week from 6-15 November 2020, Australia’s biggest frog count!

19.01.2022 A blast from the past! Great to see you still working in the great outdoors Gavin

19.01.2022 A fantastic project to be part of in the West Wimmera and to celebrate during NAIDOC Week.

18.01.2022 Water, water everywhere looking back at summer 2011 Warracknabeal was one of many Wimmera communities significantly impacted by the summer 2011 floods. Residents and Yarriambiack Shire Council constructed a temporary levee constructed as the flood waters rose, which stopped water from inundating the town. Following the flood, the council removed some sections of the levee and kept others. ... As part of the Warracknabeal and Brim Flood Investigation, Wimmera CMA worked with the community and council to design a new levee that would help protect the town from future flooding. Community input was critical in the levee design. *Photos of levee steering committee in 2016 courtesy of Warracknabeal Herald #Wimmerafloods2011 #Warracknabeallevee #communityproject #floodplanning

17.01.2022 Do you enjoy tinkering on DIY jobs to raise the energy efficiency rating (EER) of your home? On #SustainableHouseDay take a moment to appreciate the #Malleefow...l, one of the world’s hardest working birds, who spend up to 300 days a year tending to their nest mound with their powerful legs and sharp claws. Amazing dedication to create and maintain a mound that generates an optimum temperature to incubate eggs. A rangeland dweller with patchy distribution, Malleefowl were once found across much of the southern half of Australia, from the west coast to the Great Dividing Range. National priority actions are now underway with the support from a cohort of regional partners delivering nine Regional Land Partnerships projects targeting Malleefowl recovery in NSW, WA, SA and Victoria. Projects are monitoring active mounds, controlling feral predators including foxes and cats, as well as revegetation activities to restore suitable habitats. Our thanks to project partners Central West Local Land Services, Riverina Local Land Services, Wimmera CMA, Australian Wheatbelt Agriculture and Ecology Group, NACC, Rangelands NRM, Alinytjara Wilurara Landscape Board, Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board, and Mallee Catchment Management Authority, in collaboration with the National Malleefowl Recovery Team through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program. 15.01.2022 Yesterday we heard about some of the great insect recovery projects that Zoos Victoria's Kate Pearce, Coordinator of Ectotherms at Melbourne Zoo is working on. ... Here's one that you can get involved with and help make a difference! Zoos Victoria are asking you to log any potential sightings of migrating Bogong Moths (Agrotis infusa). They migrate from Winter breeding grounds, including Western Victoria, during Spring and are the main food source for the critically endangered Mountain Pygmy Possum (Burramys parvus). The Moth Tracker is an easy-to-use platform that can be found on the SWIFFT website (link below). All you need to do is take a photo and submit it with the location, date and time in the Moth Tracker app on mobile or computer. Also don't forget to turn off outside lights when they aren't needed to help the Moths succeed with their migration to the Victorian and NSW Alps. https://www.swifft.net.au/mothtracker/ https://www.zoo.org.au//australians-asked-to-track-moths-/ https://www.zoo.org.au//n/lights-off-for-the-bogong-moths/ #BogongMoth #MothTracker #PygmyPossum #MothMigration #VicAlps #NSWAlps #LightsOff Zoos Victoria Federation University Australia Costa Georgiadis Official Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning Parks Victoria Wimmera CMA GWMWater Barengi Gadjin Land Council Project Platypus Upper Wimmera Landcare Yarrilinks Greening Australia Trust for Nature Bush Heritage Australia Landcare Australia Landcare Victoria Australian Geographic ABC Wimmera Wimmera Mail-Times The Weekly Advertiser Horsham Rural City Council

01.01.2022 Wimmera River flow update Feb 9, 2021: The natural flow has reached Tarranyurk with a peak flow rate of about 600ML a day at the Tarranyurk gauge. We expect the flow will reach Jeparit weir pool tomorrow We headed out to have a look and stopped at our photo monitoring points including Ellis Crossing south of Dimboola near Wail. To show you how the river can change depending on climate conditions, we have included the same spot from April 2009 - what a difference water make...s! 01.01.2022 Last December we installed floating wetlands in the Wimmera River at Dimboola. It's the first project of its type in the Wimmera but is used successfully in other areas to reduce bank erosion. We have checked in regularly to see how things have progressed and we planted an extra 800 native plants. On our latest inspection we can see that they have greatly reduced the wave energy which causes bank erosion and are doing their job!... They also improve the delivery of water for the environment, and feature in our Spring update: http://ow.ly/e1Ln50Cib5l Photo 1: December 2019 Photo 2: March 2020 Photo 3: October 2020 #waterwaysforlife #waterways #healthywaterways #WimmeraRiver #Wimmerwaterways #envflows #waterfortheenvironment #environmentalwater Victorian Environmental Water Holder Dimboola Courier
