24.01.2022 Cat handling tips - building trust with your new cat Rescue cats often have poor experiences with humans, characterised by negative touch memories and requir...e a lot of reassurance and patience, with the gradual re-introduction of positive touch experiences. A stressed cat will react out of fear and either run away permanently and/or hiss, growl, scratch and bite, none of which are good outcomes for a cat that has already had negative human interaction experiences. TIP #1: Cats are extremely sensitive to touch and generally dont like being picked up. Human hands to a cat look like giant predatory claws which are very threatening. Trying to touch a cat who doesnt know you will result in sensory overload for a cat which will cause the cat to scratch and bite you. TIP #2: Approach a cat slowly from the side, not the front. Kneel on the floor but avoid getting your face too close. Talk in a calm, soothing voice. Place your hand palm up near the cat so it can smell you. TIP #3: Avoid outstretched fingers to pat a cat. Use short, soothing strokes with a gentle, closed hand on the back of its head and upper half of its back only. As trust builds with your cat, you can pat further down its body, towards its tail. Avoid patting underneath your cats body, feet and tail until your cat is very reassured by your touch, which takes considerable time to develop. Cats view touch on delicate parts of the underside of their body as very threatening and predatory. TIP #4: Allow a cat to come to you to seek touch. Dont grab or hold a cat whilst it sits on your lap. Let the cat feel that it has an escape route. As trust with your cat grows, your cat will gradually jump on your lap and want to explore your hands and your smell. TIP #5: Do not leave children unsupervised with a new cat at any time. Sit with the child at all times during interaction. It is very important to teach children how to handle cats correctly and safely (no cuddling/squeezing/kissing) to avoid serious injury to the child and to the cat. A cat that rolls its head in your hands when you touch it and purrs in a high pitch is a very happy cat. A cat with flattened ears and dilated pupils on the other hand, is a cats whisker away from scratching and biting due to fear, and possibly absconding permanently. Rescue cats make extremely loyal and loving pets to owners who take the time to build trust and build a positive bond with their cat. They have already experienced trauma in their short little lives, but they are very resilient survivors who are extremely intelligent and adaptable to new environments, with the right owner. 19.01.2022 Stray cat or dog problem in your area? OUR RESCUE ORGANISATION IS NOT PERMITTED BY LAW to catch or rescue stray domestic animals. Cats and dogs need to be identified first, before they are classified as a stray animal. Microchipped pets obviously make this process easier! There are various Facebook pages who are dedicated to free advertising of lost pets with the aim of reuniting lost pets with their owners. Lost pets of SA is an example. If the owner cannot be located it is up to local government Council dog/cat management officers to manage roaming cats/dogs in your geographical area. Veterinary clinics and local government dog/cat officers have access to microchip scanners which can be used to identify an owner.

04.01.2022 We gratefully acknowledge the recent donations of fabric supplies/quilts/blankets/polar fleece, hand made joey pouches and birds nests for distribution by us to South Australian wildlife groups, sent to us from volunteers in NT, Victoria and SA. We are forwarding these to Kangaroo Island wildlife groups immediately, via: KI Cartage in Edinburgh North. Thank you Marion Power, Angela Crump (VIC), Margaret Carey (NT) and Jacqui & Ian Timms (SA) who have sent cot blankets/quilts/...fabric supplies and hand made joey pouches/birds nests. Volunteers sew and crochet these pouches and nests by spending their own money to buy the fabric, spend hours and hours sewing/crocheting them, then post them to us to distribute to wildlife groups as needed, ALL AT THEIR OWN COST. Thank you for all that you do for injured wildlife... PS Im sure our kittens would like to help look after kangaroos/koalas/possums/wombats but I have told them that they cannot have any other furry friends called wombats/kangaroos or koalas, because we are a cat sanctuary and the wildlife would not like eating kitten food xxx See more

01.01.2022 THREE KITTENS ADOPTED IN 3 DAYS! Congratulations Jasper, Teddy & Dexter, well miss looking after you!

01.01.2022 Dear Michelle, we thought you might appreciate the fact that whilst you went to the supermarket to buy us food, we learnt how to open computer programs that are not shortcuts on the desktop and we also learnt how to use Microsoft Word. The feral cat learned to type today by watching some YouTube videos of how to type if youre a cat, then we opened up our own word document and wrote you a letter. It says Hurry up please, we ate 5 minutes ago and were starving to death. Oh, and obviously we havent figured out the spellcheck function, but well work on that next time you decide to leave us alone again. Love from the kittens
