06.01.2022 A day in the life of Dr Jenna. An insight into a "regular day" (no two days are the same!) for a Veterinarian...Jenna is a little unique in that she somehow ma...nages to fit in several hobbies too! 5:30am - 7:00am I get up and go for a 5km run. This is a new addition to my schedule and Im finding it a fantastic way to unwind and start the day with purpose. Then I have breakfast, get ready and feed and train my two Border Collies, Piper and Tetris. We have a range of activities that the dogs train on in the mornings, usually tricks or competition behaviours. Today they are working on their fitness, core strength and posture. I then give them their supplements, brush their teeth, feed my cat and say goodbye to my husband before heading off. 7:00am - 7:45am Drive to the clinic. I live in Henty and listen to podcasts along the way (current favourites are Seize the Yay and CogDog Radio). 8:00am 1:00pm First block of consulting at work. Today my schedule has involved a new puppy visit, vaccinations and annual check-ups, ear infection rechecks, a heart medication check-up, a limping dog and a sad discussion about end of life care for a long-term favourite patient. 1:00pm 3:00pm This is my block today where I have lunch, make phone calls to check on patients, update clients on results via phone and email, make treatment plans and write patient records, surgical and radiology reports. Today I was also needed to scrub in on a surgery being performed by my colleague when they needed an extra pair of hands for a few minutes. 3:00pm 6:00pm Afternoon consulting block, another very varied selection of veterinary patients including an emergency seizing patient requiring immediate attention, a rabbit with an eye problem, a kitten with a congenital defect, and a dog with a grass seed stuck in the ear canal. 6:00 7:30pm Time to finish paperwork, clinical notes and emails for the day. In the warmer months, before heading back to Henty, I allow my dogs to have a swim in the Murray down at Noreuil, which is just around the corner from the clinic. 8:15pm 9:00pm Arrive home, dinner with husband and relax for a while. Feed pets. 9:00 10:30pm Music practice, another essential in my life. I am a clarinettist and tonight I am working on the Krommer Concerto for two Clarinets and Orchestra, the slow movement from the Mozart Clarinet Concerto and a movement from Shuberts 6th Symphony as well as some scales and technical work. All good fun! Then wind down from the day, get things ready for tomorrow and spend some time drinking tea (or wine!) in front of the TV with my husband. Then bedtimeThough Im not very good at sticking to it!
