23.01.2022 We're making babies! ... the feathered kind of course . Mr and Mrs Squwark have spent a romantic week in the honeymoon suite to help produce the next generation of Windsong egg layers. We've also introduced another 12 Australorpe eggs from different roosters/hens for good genetic diversity. So in a couple of weeks the farm will be clucken busy and bursting with new life.

I've done 3 out of 4 weeks of this online course and each week it just keeps getting better. If you're a deep thinker about the environment and human and non human connection, I can't recommend this course enough.

17.01.2022 BEE SWARMS! Spring is the season where bees wake from their winter hibernation and start to increase their numbers. As they do, they outgrow their current space, raise a new queen and then split into two groups ... one group stays and the other flys off to find a new home. The swarm is in transition; they generally won't stay long but this still needs to be managed by someone with knowledge about bees. Remember, they are looking for a new home, so even if they move from your... property, they may just end up in another building/structure near by. This then becomes a hive removal (otherwise known as a 'cut out') which is generally far more time consuming and difficult to remove, stressful for the bees (you're breaking their house) and costly for the house owner. In addition, they may end up near a person who is allergic to bees. WHAT TO DO ... 1. Take a few photos 2. Note the time you first noticed them 3. Post the picture, time and location on local bee keeping pages asap for someone to collect (Remember they are in transition). Usually swarm captures are free of charge whereas hive removals may not be.

16.01.2022 Waste into Wonderful #3 ... A few years back I came across Bings Garden Art at a market in Briag and thought what an awesome idea. This guy takes junk that we'd throw into landfill and makes art from it. We now have 8 pieces of Bing's art bringing even more life to the farm including the recovery of broken park bench which is now beautifully restored to even better than the original.

16.01.2022 Good signs our bees have thrived during our relatively mild winter this year. They are making the most of this beautiful sunny day and collecting loads of nectar and pollen from the lavender and wattles blooming atm. How many bees with loaded pollen baskets can you see?

12.01.2022 Clocked up over 400km today in a last minute pre level 3 restrictions scurry. From home to Traralgon for minor ute upgrades, then to Seaview to pick up 160 trees and finally to Toora North to load up on 100kg of Alpaca fibre to fill our eco warrior dog beds with before heading home. Drove through every weather condition including snow, bogged the car and (kind of/actually I did/Andrew doesn't know yet ) bought 2 more Alpacas to add to my bleeding hearts club. A huge shout out to Louisa from 'Carigaholt' for the Alpaca fibre and for her mean ute recovery skills and Rob from Grandridge Tree Nursery.

It has so many applications including cosmetics, furniture polish, food saving wraps, candles in fact you name it and we can probably do something wonderful with it. Our first attempt at making something from the wax from our hives was pure vanilla lip balm, which went off like a frog in a sock. 02.01.2022 We're Grandparents! Mr & Mrs Squark have produced 5 fluffy butts plus another 9 fluffies from another breeder for genetic diversity. These Black Australorpe chicks will certainly keep us busy over the next 8 weeks until they become fully feathered and can manage their own body temp regulation. Until then we'll be handling these little nuggets so they become used to people and doing regular health checks to give them a great start to life. Welcome to the world little ones
