25.01.2022 ** HUMP DAY HELP DESK ** Good morning dear reader, it is my pleasure to invite you to yet another instalment of the Hump Day Help Desk. Whilst I would love to tell you all that you have awoken to a warm summer’s day, it’s the weekend and we are all slip, slop slapping before heading down to the beach for a day of fun and frivolity, I can’t so, here is the real deal. It's a school day, it's early, it's cold and there are still three more sleeps till the weekend is upon us. B...Continue reading
25.01.2022 2019/20 State Event Venues Ready to Roll After months of discussions, fine tuning and finally a bit of finessing, we are pleased to announce the host venues for the Women’s Bowls NSW State events in 2019 and 2020. Women’s Bowls NSW have partnered with a number of very well credentialled venues that will provide ideal facilities to conduct our major showcase events next year. We are so pleased to take some of our major events in 2019 and 2020 to new venues where we have not ...previously been, as well as revisiting some of our loyal supporter clubs who are proven performers when it comes to providing exceptional facilities commented State President Maryann Parcell we were determined to ensure that the calendar provides a mix of locations and events in both Metro and Country NSW, so that all members can be a part of our major Championships she continued. The calendar of events covers all of NSW with the Pennant Finals being held at Kingscliff Beach Bowls Club with the assistance of several surrounding venues (14-18 August 2019), the NSW Championships at South Tamworth Bowling Club (2-10 September 2019) and the Champion of Club Champion Singles heading to Asquith Bowling Club (2-5 July 2019). Coupled with the already announced State Carnival heading up the freeway in the lovely Tuncurry Beach Bowling Club and local clubs in the area (27-31 May 2019) and the annual City versus Country clash returning to Soldiers Point for the second year running, there is surely something for everyone to enjoy. 2019 will also see the launch of two new competitions and we are pleased to announce that the first Weekend Pennant Final is to be played on the 2nd and 3rd November at Belmont and the awesome Blacktown Workers Club will host the inaugural Summer League Final on the 1st-3rd March 2019. More about these events will be announced in the coming weeks. The appetite for clubs to host an event in 2019 and 2020 was unexpected with many applications received noted CEO, Daniel Gatt, the selection process was very hard as there were many worthwhile venues who could have easily been able to host our events. We thank all the clubs who submitted an Expression of Interest for doing so and we hope they will do so again when applications open for 2021/2022. Whilst it is yet to be decided if the Regional Challenge will be resurrected in 2019 and dates are yet to be locked away for the Indoor Qualifiers, Women’s Bowls NSW remains confident that the venue hosts we are partnering with in the next two years will do us proud. This, coupled with the level of competition amongst female bowlers in NSW hitting new heights means that our events over the next few years are primed to be the most fiercely contested clashes on record and a must for spectators and players alike. Stay posted to the Women’s Bowls NSW website for more information.
25.01.2022 ** HUMP DAY HELP DESK ** Sometimes it is worth your while to occasionally take a moment, sit back and reassess. Work out where you're going, where you've been and what kind of contribution one continues to make to our bowls society. We realise this is deep and philosophical for early Wednesday morning, however, self-reflection has no clock nor has it got any sense of decency making us think this hard this early. Damn you self-reflection!! You see we have conducted extensive r...Continue reading

25.01.2022 ** HUMP DAY HELP DESK ** Here we go, bang a gong, its Wednesday people so we are on like Donkey Kong. We’ve lit the fuse, set the timer, waved the flag or sounded the horn. We have fired the gun, blown the whistle or even kicked the can. We have set sail, fired up, ushered in, broken the ice, got things rolling, kicked off, set in motion and got under way. No matter how you put it we have arrived at Wednesday and as a result we have commenced proceedings on this week’s Hu...Continue reading

21.01.2022 ** HUMP DAY HELP DESK ** So we thought we were having a bad week when our trusty Breville sandwich maker decided to give up the ghost and usher itself off to toastie heaven to take its rightful place next to the George Forman grille, the ab doer 2000 exercise equipment and that round curly Demtel thing that’s meant to help you do sit ups and could only be bought via the television for 14 easy payments of $22.27. 19.01.2022 ** HUMP DAY HELP DESK ** So, it’s Wednesday right?, and on Wednesday we look inquisitively to the good people at the Hump Day Help Desk to unravel the mystery’s that present themselves on the regular. The moral dilemmas that define who we are as a community of bowlers, a collective of friends or even as a society of decent, civil people. Wow, that’s totally heavy man!! That is a big burden to lump onto a bunch of mick mocks who struggle in making a determination whether boar...Continue reading

15.01.2022 Announcement: 2018 Australian Senior Sides Championships It is with great pleasure that we announce the players who have been selected to represent NSW at the 2...018 Australian Senior Sides Championships that will be played on the Copper Coast in South Australia from the 15-18 October. This year’s team have been selected after a tough trial recently held at Carlingford Bowling Club where 24 eligible players were put through their paces under the watchful eye of the NSW Selectors. Unfortunately, only 12 ladies could be selected to do their State proud. The team is: Vicky Turner (Warilla) Jenny Hepburn (Neutral Bay) Margaret Smith (Ettalong Memorial) Beth Quinlan (St Johns Park) Jill Bird (Merrylands) Claire Kelly (Forster) Joan Thomas (Tuncurry) Betty Herbertson (Soldiers point) Christine Myers (South Tamworth) Denise Huender (St Johns Park) Di Davis (Cabramatta) Carolyn Glen (Kurri Kuri) This year’s team is bursting with talented bowlers who should perform well at the 2018 Australian Senior Sides Championships noted Women’s Bowls NSW President Maryann Parcell. Our aim is to hold the matching pair of Sides Trophies after the NSW open team were victorious earlier in the year at the Australian Sides event she continued. Whilst every selection into a State team is special, for Di Davis of Cabramatta and Jenny Hepburn who hails from Neutral Bay, this year’s selection is even more sweeter with both being debutants into the Senior Side. Di and Jenny will be joining Claire Kelly (Forster) and Christine Myers (South Tamworth) who have both played themselves back into a State shirt after missing out on last year’s team. We take this opportunity to congratulate all selected players on a wonderful achievement.

14.01.2022 ** HUMP DAY HELP DESK** So, you know that there are things that we know, right? And there are things that we know that we don’t know, right? Coupled with the things that we don’t know that we don’t know, there are those things that we think we don’t know we know until they become things that we know we know. And finally, there are the things that we know that we just don’t want to know. You know what we are talking about?...Continue reading

13.01.2022 ** HUMP DAY HELP DESK ** Fun fact number 2635 did you know that this week way back in 1937 the first ever shopping trolley was invented by a forward-thinking young whippersnapper named Sylvan Golding, who wanted to find a way for people to buy more groceries from his store. True story that. Whilst indeed an interesting fun fact, why is that relevant to this weekly goodness we hear you ask in a chorus? Well, it is interesting because young Sylvan owned a grocery store in Ok...Continue reading

11.01.2022 ** HUMP DAY HELP DESK ** We regret to inform the reading public that all is not well in the offices of the Hump Day Help Desk. What started as friendly banter ...over a cup of Dilmah has erupted into raised voices, arms flailing around like an over exuberate traffic cop, a bit of blue language and the resultant swivelling of the IKEA chairs away from our uninformed opponent. Furious is an understatement, just when you think you know your team, they drop this kind of bombshell on you out of the blue and you are meant to be understanding. Well, I ask you, dear reader, how can one be understanding of someone who puts Vegemite in the fridge and tomato sauce in the pantry. Surely not? The rightful place is obviously the reverse. Vegemite’s correct home is in the pantry and the tomato sauces natural environment is obviously the fridge, once the little foil thing has been removed from the top that is. We can accept that the Vegemite jar advises that it may be refrigerated once open, however, surely that is advisory, just like the big red signs on the freeway that say wrong way go back. No one believes that do they? The rational part of my brain knows there is enough salt in a jar of Vegemite to survive through drought, flood and a nuclear blast. It will never go off, no matter how warm the temperature or where it lives, so why waste useful fridge space on the marvellous spread? Now we are many things here at the Hump Day Help Desk, and we include professional on that comprehensive list, so we will not let our bickering steer us away from our core duties - providing answers to the questions that matter. So let’s jump straight into this week’s question and spread it liberally around all the way to the edges. Dear picnic humper, I have a question about wearing oofos (thongs) on the green during pennant. Is it legal under the laws, and as footwear does not carry the BA logo, how do you know it is permissible? Finally, if someone wanted to paint their shoes multicoloured or with sparkles, can they? Thanks in advance, Lisa. Ok, so let’s deal with these in a step by step process (sorry bad shoe joke). As all approved footwear is noted on the BA website, www.bowls.com.au, the requirement is fairly simple if they appear on the list, they are permissible for use at all levels. If they are not on the list, they do not belong just like the Vegemite in the fridge. A quick glance at the above mentioned list has OOahh Slides, OOriginal Thong, and OOmg Shoes (under the oofos brand) approved for use amongst an array of other quality kicks that are listed. Now in some instances, individuals have ‘re-soled’ a non-bowls shoe to ensure it complies with the laws of the sport. While this process should be a rarity with the recent improvements in shoe manufacturing, it is permissible and should be approved by the controlling body of the event or the member’s state/territory association or Bowls Australia. To answer the final part of your enquiry, footwear must be coordinated to your approved uniform. So yes, you can paint them, put in multi-coloured laces even go nuts with a bedazzler. However, if they stray from standard fare, they may need approval from the controlling body, so we recommend treading careful, putting your best foot forward and using common sense on this front. Alright, with that question now firmly put away in the overcrowded shoe closet right next to the brown Hush Puppies and the very sensible Homy Ped footwear, we can return to ignoring the Vegemite minority here in the office. It’s hard work maintaining a stubborn silence whilst we privately wonder what other items of edible goodness are being stored in the wrong location. To ensure it is not us that is wrong, we ask for your knowledge and guidance good reader. Let's tick them off one item at a time: Eggs We say fridge, you say? Honey We say pantry, absolutely, right? Jam We say fridge, surely? Peanut butter We say pantry, yes? Chocolate We say fridge, what say you? Of course, these decisions are personal, although be wise, as the wrong dealings with your eggs may result in you being outcast like a social pariah. Keep your foodstuff wherever it is you like unless you're keeping your sauce in the pantry, then you're just doing it wrong and need to reconsider. Until next week..

07.01.2022 This just in from the Neapan page.. What a great 2 days of Bowls, Both senior and open 4’s went down on Thursday, and today Friday the 13th had Windsor down playing the Triples and both open and Senior Pairs even on the last end forcing an extra end and sadly both going down The excellent news is Sue from Austral won the singles and a game that was as close as butter a On bread every end, finishing at 25-22... Congratulations to every lady playing ... just loved it See more
07.01.2022 ** HUMP DAY HELP DESK ** Once the sun had risen this morning, the temperature started to increase and our extremities defrosted and became useable again, we wan...dered out to the letterbox that is located out the front of the Hump Day secret lair to see what conundrums had been left by the postie. To our disappointment, nothing but a catalogue from JB Hi Fi and a coupon for cheap Tuesday eats from Franks Pizza down the road. Buy a ham and pineapple and get a free garlic bread. Good deal that - but not what we were hoping for. Not all is lost though, we may keep that voucher for dinner anyway. Dejected we strolled back to our desk, removing our shoes at the door as no one wants dirt trampled in their secret hideout or dirty shoes on their shagpile. Firing up the email only to find yet again no questions for the Hump Day Help Desk this week, only an email verifying our application to the Best and Less frequent shopper program and another offering us discount prices on the purchase of little blue pills. Don’t know what they do but we will pass on the medication I think. So, just as we were resigned to not having any questions to answer and our self-worth being reduced by 68%, our email machine beeped and a question appeared sent by Kaye Arnott who writes: Dear Hump Truck, as most other sporting clubs have a responsibility to promote and sponsor their sport as part of a non-taxable status, are women’s bowls required to do the same? Why I ask is, our senior 4s have got through to the state playoffs. Is it, not reasonable to fund expenses when the club is quite financial? It seems a common practice for older members in lots of clubs to have the idea that we are just there to build up the bank balance. Not to promote our game and encourage and support players to strive to higher achievements. A hard-hitting question like that Kaye, deserves a proper journalistic response. Unfortunately for you, we at the Hump Desk are neither hard hitting or journalistic so the best we can offer is a slightly obscure answer read in our best Ray Martin style voice. Here goes, First of all lets kick this off with a hearty well done and a here here to you Kaye and you team for the win. Sterling effort that. Now we know that Senior Fours is a District event that individual teams enter and whilst they are wearing the club uniform the team has not been selected by the club. The team is crowned the District and then Regional winner and receives the accolades. Hopefully most clubs are extremely proud of their winning team and It is not unreasonable to suggest that a club that is financial enough to do so should consider kicking the can to assist the team in their efforts to make it to the state finals. We realise not all clubs are fat full of the folding and for those guys, fundraising and alike with the support of the club is encouraged, however if the bank balance is on the positive and it is within the realms that the club can assist, then we'd definitely provide a hearty well done and here here to the club as well if they do. We don’t mandate clubs should do so, that remains a decision of each club, however if clubs wish to retain members, then they need to give something back, after all it is the members that are building the bank balance. We know some clubs are collecting money simply to watch the amount grow, however a rich club with no members is not a club, it’s a bank and we all know the trouble banks are in right now. Clubs accruing unreasonably large bank accounts are against the ethos of the club mentality and are not congruent with the underlying principles of a not for profit entity. There is no glory in a having a massive bank account and a resultant unhappy or declining membership. Clubs need to invest in their members, their recruitment, their development and their facilities to remain relevant. If your club is not doing that, go to another that is, as your existing club won’t be around for too much longer. Now, we don’t want every club to struggle and we encourage clubs to keep some money aside for a rainy day, but there are some that are waiting for a tsunami to hit or Cyclone Tracey to tear through the joint. That’s crazy. Be financially wise enough to be secure and the remainder should be reinvested for the good of the club and the membership. Now, having said that we also say that Clubs must not distribute funds to one player and not another based on a random decision of the President, the committee or anyone else. The rules should be developed and administered equally amongst all members in that case. Kaye, we hope this answers your question, we also hope that this will prompt others to write in their questions to the Hump Day Help Desk otherwise next week we will open our Facebook page on Wednesday morning to an empty post where the Hump Day used to be. We will have to shut down the hump day offices and hold a garage sale of all our prized positions like our dancing Elvis clock, the sparkly disco ball hanging from the ceiling, the orange lava lamp, our collection of garden gnomes and our dried flower arrangement that bears an uncanny resemblance to Roy Orbison. We couldn’t part company with that surely, so to keep us in business for another week email or Facebook your questions in and we will do what we can. If you are sending your questions via Australia Post, Carrier Pigeon or smoke signals, allow a few days extra as the delivery of those services are not as good as they once were. Till next week. (maybe)

05.01.2022 ** HUMP DAY HELP DESK ** It’s a cold Wednesday morning and the aroma of international roast coffee is wafting through the air blending with the smell of the dust burning from our brown Kambrook foot heater, that we purchased in 1993 from the garage sale that Frank the neighbour held, that we open the offices of the Hump Day Help Desk. 05.01.2022 BOWLS HOTS UP FOR SUMMER Women’s Bowls NSW are pleased to announce the introduction of a brand new event, conducted at District level. The Summer League is spec...ifically aimed at providing State title achievement possibilities for members who cannot play at our usual weekday times. Therefore, it is mandatory that every game in the Summer League must be played after 6pm during daylight savings time (October to March). The Summer League provides an opportunity for players to participate in the sport who are unable to play on traditional bowls days, thus providing member clubs the opportunity to promote the sport to new members. It is designed to be fast paced with grading restrictions that give players at all levels in the sport a chance at a State Title. Entry fee is capped at $15 per team ($5 per player) paid to the Districts who support the event. We note that some clubs may charge an additional green fee for each game played. Of course, we hope that districts will support the Summer League however should they elect not to, teams wishing to participate from those areas are still permitted to enter into a section which will be administered by the State Match Committee on behalf the District. Team entries will be accepted on a first received basis so teams are encouraged to get an entry form which is available on our website into your District as soon as possible. Clubs may enter as many teams as they like however Districts will only be permitted to enter as many sections of 6 teams as entries allow. We are looking forward to members enjoying this new and innovative event offering and look forward to the Summer League becoming a regular fixture on the Women’s Bowls NSW calendar. Attached are the Conditions of Play and a summary of the event.
05.01.2022 ** HUMP DAY HELP DESK ** Unless you’re a banana bender from sunny Queensland or hail from the western side of this vast brown land, you are in no doubt trying to reconcile what day of the week it is after the most recent long weekend in celebration of the Queen’s birthday. 01.01.2022 ** HUMP DAY HELP DESK ** The hearty souls who stick with us week in and week out will recall that last week we were waiting on a lovely man from Nigeria to depo...sit half of a 137 Million US dollar fortune into our bank account. Well, we can confirm that ol’ mate must of got busy ironing or washing the car or standing in line at Big W waiting for the new ABBA album to be released, as for whatever reason the promised cash has not yet hit our daily saver. So alas, we turn our attention to yet another Hump Day Help Desk. To show our continued commitment to our Wednesday project, today we have two hotbeds of confusion for us to quell. The first cab away from the rank this week comes from Judy who asks: Dear Humpback Whale, Our club has its carded playday on Thursdays, I am a worker who can not do Thursdays and have a choice either not to play competitions or forfeit every week as my boss is not as understanding as some when it comes to taking time off work to play bowls. Is there something that can be done? Well Judith, Judy, Jude - it’s like this you see our Conditions of Play dictate that you can play on or before the carded day so in your case, the weekend prior is just as acceptable as any other day in the week after the Friday before, and before or on the Thursday after. In fact, being a worker, we encourage clubs to cater for your circumstances and support playing on weekends. It promotes good competition, attracts new members to the club and allows your existing members to participate. So it's about this time in every argument that the old this is how it’s always been done and we know, but that’s how we do things or even that’s the rules at our club, gets wheeled out of the closet. Well to those people who are pulling out those old chestnuts as excuses we say to you rubbish, garbage, bunkum, hogwash or even poppycock!!!, yep poppycock we say with three exclamation marks. Catering to the working woman is norm now and a change we all need to accept. If your club has not yet embraced working women, then go to one that has and leave the deadwood behind. Change can be an adventure when we were young, bikers were rebels who wore black leather, had long beards, rode Harley Davidsons and had names like Mad Dog and Spike. Now a biker rides a step through scooter, wears pointy shoes and runs with names like River, Tarquin, Ziggy or Frank. Good or bad the Zigman and his crew are the new normal. What about when KFC was called Kentucky Fried Chicken, Scallywags were Golliwogs, Telstra was Telecom and your Nissan car was better known as a Datsun. All changes that are now just distant memories, and the new edition is accepted as norm. Let’s make catering for working women the new bowls norm. On that note do you remember Norm, the fat Life Be In It guy, what happened to him? We digress, do you remember when unwashed hipsters with manbuns and designer stubble were not acceptable well look now. Ok on second thoughts, bad example, they still have a lot to answer for and remain a laughing stock. Any person who wins a game by forfeit because they refuse to play weekends but are able to, then poor by you. Go to bed with a mirror and wakeup to yourself. Question one done, bring in number two, which is a continuation from the allowance of going at your BA Approved thongs with a bedazzler from a couple of weeks back (see 30 May if your memory is shot). We have had a question by Mary who enquires can she tie dye her Bowls Australia Approved shirt for social play. Mary, technically you may without fear of breaking the laws, however tie dye really? Is that a commitment you really want to make? We at the Hump Desk are all for peace, love and harmony man, but tie dye bold move by you Mary, bold move indeed. Now we don’t like to judge at the Hump Desk and if tie dye floats your boat or a flash artful design sketched using a sharpie marker is your thing, cool. If you’re into sequins, go nuts. Even if you accidentally dropped your coloured delicates in with your white bowls top resulting in a nice shade of pink, then that’s fine as well. As long as your clothes are BA Approved and acceptable to your club who will determine if the outfit is smart casual as per the requirement then who are we to say anything. If we are nothing else here at the Hump Day Help Desk, we are good to our word - we embrace change so if you are a working woman looking for a Sunday roll, if you are a uni student hoping to pick up a Saturday game, if you are a grandmother who looks after the tin lids during the weekdays and would like to throw one down the hey diddle diddle on a Thursday afternoon in daylight savings time lets all do our best to make that happen. If you are looking at tie dying your shirt, bedazzling your thongs or running the Janome over your headwear to add a splash of colour, we are behind that as well. The one change we will not tolerate however (beside hipsters) is Hump Day not hitting your Facebook feed on a Wednesday morning so until next week..
