12.01.2022 Sad News - John McNeill John died in his sleep at home in the early hours of Monday 28th December 2020. His funeral details have not been finalised. John rode his latest challenge, a 3 year old future polo and trail riding pony, the previous day having enjoyed the happiest Christmas with his children and grandchildren. Most people in the Eastern States of Australia connected with the great family of Polo will know or have heard John in his adult career as a polo player and... caller and those who were close to him will appreciate his wit, generosity and kind, caring nature. John was meticulous with horses and all the animals under his care and devoted to his wife, Shayne, and his children, James and Kirsty, and his grandchildren. John was 75 and had retired to Goobarragandra on the river of that same name , about half an hour east of Tumut , bordering the Kosciuszko National Park. He continued as always to keep and ride a handy horse, and enjoyed many adventures into the quite challenging Park. John, a Melbourne native, spent his lifetime in the pastoral and farming industry working with and for some of the more distinguished operators on the land. His managers stint at Barry John’s Peel Valley Machinery at Quirindi sparked his interest in polo at the time of Sinclair playing off 10 goals and Peter Cudmore on 7 goals. John sometimes missed his lunch to ride his ponies instead. He then went on to manage properties for Mrs. Anthony and her daughter Blair Parry- Okeden until his retirement in recent years. John and Shayne and family lived at Eringoarrah, a magnificent stretch of country on the Murrumbidgee near Wantabadgery between Gundagai and Wagga. His polo calling career first came to general notice when he took over the broadcasting duties at Warwick Farm after Alex McLeod retired. He called International Games in Sydney, Kooralbyn, Melbourne, Boca Raton and West Palm Beach in Florida, Hawaii, and in England . John has been the constant caller at Garangula since that Club’s inception and will be sadly missed by the Garangula Community. As he will be missed by us all. Especially me. He was a very good friend. John Kilmartin NSW Polo Association See more
