U...nfortunately this morning you won't see the sky that colour as it's overcast with light showers, still, it's a nice spot to be. More info at www.lancelin.com.au

23.01.2022 The mangoes are fruiting well! Hopefully we won’t have too much extreme weather and we retain most of them this year. Harvest is coming! But it’s still a little... way off .. we estimate we’ll start about mid February. The pics are of Kensington Pride (KP); the R2E2s are at about the same stage. The fruit is mostly about the size of a small blueberry, some small grape size, and a few still pin-heads. See more

22.01.2022 A message from our Senior Astronomer, Rick Tonello; Tonight, of course, will be the "Great Conjunction " of Jupiter and Saturn. This is certainly not to be mis...sed. Last time these two gas giants appeared this close was on the 16th July 1623!! Even though they appear to be very close to one another, they are separated by a distance of over 700 million kilometers! However, let us not forget, today is also the Summer Solstice. Today is sometimes referred to as the "Longest Day." This term is incorrect. The day is still 24 hours long (well, 23h 56m long for the pedantic), but today marks the longest amount of daylight hours for the Southern Hemisphere. It's all due to the tilt of Earth's rotational axis with respect to ecliptic (the plane of the Solar System). With the South Pole pointing towards the Sun, the path the Sun follows across our local sky is higher above the horizon and therefore longer. For our Northern Hemisphere brethren, the axial tilt is AWAY* from the sun, therefore the Sun's path across the sky is shorter (Winter Solstice). (* - sorry to shout-text "away", it was meant to be in italics....) So, if you want to see one of our famous West Coast Sunsets and observe the Great Conjunction, join the GDC Observatory staff and myself at the Scarborough Beach Pool carpark tonight at 7:30pm. See y'all then! #astronomy #PerthWA #WanderOutYonder #education #Solstice2020 #JupiterSaturnConjunctio2020

20.01.2022 LANCELIN'S FIRST BEN SIGN There's a new addition at the jetty; a BEN (Beach Emergency Number) sign! There are more on the beach north and south of Lancelin and... should you find yourself in need of urgent assistance, you can quote the BEN (GG160 for the jetty area) and the emergency services will have a good idea of where you are. Make a note of the numbers if you on more remote sections of beach and just hope you don't need to quote them.

20.01.2022 SAND RE-NOURISHMENT WORK UNDERWAY This was the scene a short time ago in front of Grace Darling Park with sand being carted in to shore up the park. In answer t...o the many questions about the Cunliffe Street re-development, here is the Shire's update. "The draft plan was not presented to Council yesterday (Dec 15) because there is still a couple of design issues. In any case, when the draft is presented it will be at a Council Briefing Session and not a Council Meeting. Briefing Sessions are for Council to be briefed on upcoming projects and items shortly to be presented to Council at an upcoming Council Meeting. For now it is expected that the draft will be presented to Council at its Briefing Session in January 2021 (for an initial viewing formal decisions are never made at Briefing Sessions) and public consultation will then be undertaken in approximately February 2021. Coincidentally this is a much more practical time of year to do this because by that point most people will be back from holidays and it is envisaged that a final draft (with this public feedback considered) will be presented at a Council Meeting shortly thereafter for formal endorsement." So there is hope on the horizon.

19.01.2022 Have not been up the bombing range for a while, the last time there it was very narrow and steep, so have been fishing holes closer to home. Went for a run toda...y to check it out and stocked up with some nice sandies for the weekends bait supply. So here is a beach report..... Weed s bad in many places though there are plenty of stretches it is thin and with low wind and swell easy to fish. Beaches have really widened the further you go the better it gets, though certainly hit a few soft patches that needed a re think to pass. Just when you get to the good bit for gutters there is a bitch of a beach wash out to pass, need to go swamp mode there even at low tide, not for me so turned back. See more

16.01.2022 Get your pots ready, the whites are about to walk! Using predictive modelling techniques based on the average water temperatures between August and October, o...ur rock lobster scientists have predicted that the whites migration will begin around Wednesday 18 November. Each year the timing of the migration is strongly correlated with water temperature, with warmer waters associated with an earlier migration. This year, our water temperatures have been average, not too hot and not too cold, indicating that the migration will most likely begin towards the middle of the month, around the 18th. What is a white lobster? Around this time each year, Western Rock Lobsters approaching sexual maturity moult from their regular red colour, into a lighter pink colour known as a white. At this time, they leave the coastal reefs and begin a mass migration, travelling north west, into waters as deep as 200m, until they reach their breeding grounds where they become sedentary again on the deeper reefs. As always, you must have a licence to fish for any species of rock lobster and abide by all fishing rules, including bag and boat limits.

15.01.2022 FUN IN THE SUN These 3 women were having the time of their lives on the dunes the day I took this shot. They had travelled from Perth to see what all the fuss ...was about and when they got their first glimpse of our towering hills of sand, they were hooked. We are fortunate to have such an asset on our doorstep and with a top in the mid twenties tomorrow, it should be a great day on Lancelins sand dunes. Book your activities before you arrive at https://www.lancelin.com.au/ Well be looking out for you!

13.01.2022 CREAMY AND DREAMY The Turquoise Coast coastline, from Guilderton to Green Head, is quite remarkable and worth a visit. As the weather changes in the far north ...in a couple of months, Perth people will start looking closer to home for a holiday or day trip. Guilderton, Seabird, Ledge Pt, Lancelin, Cervantes, Jurien Bay and Green Head are just 1 - 3 hours drive away from Perth and visitor numbers will rise. So, do you know which part of the Turquoise Coast youd find this picturesque stretch of beach?

12.01.2022 Only 5 more sleeps until Xmas.

11.01.2022 The Sacred Mooja or WA Christmas Tree ~The Tree of Souls~ Don't Pick the Flowers! ... "The Moojar tree (Nuytsia floribunda) commonly known as the Western Australian Christmas tree. The moojar was regarded as highly spiritual because it was associated with the spirits of the dead who according to the ‘old people’ camped on the branches and flowers of the tree on their way to Kurannup the land of the ancestors across the Western ocean. They said to us: ‘We don’t like to go near this tree.’ The cultural significance of Nuytsia floribunda is well established in the early ethnohistorical records. Daisy Bates in an article in The Australasian (1926 in Bridge 1992: 150) refers to it as the ghost tree and in a later publication (1938) the tree of souls. Her Noongar informants call it the moojarr or Kaanya Tree (kaanya, meaning recently departed soul). Bates emphasises that this tree was sacred to all Bibbulmun people throughout southwestern Australia from Jurien Bay to the east of Esperance. She categorically states that: ‘No living Bibbulmun ever sheltered or rested beneath the shade of the tree of souls; no flower or bud or leaf of the tree was ever touched by child or adult; no game that took shelter beneath it was ever disturbed.’ (Bates 1938 in Bridge 1992: 153)" https://anthropologyfromtheshed.com//traditional-signific/

05.01.2022 Lancelin Island...One of my favourite places, no matter how many times we go there, we look forward to going back next time You get a great view from @thelo...okoutlancelin (situated at the north end of town) and are able to visit if you have your own transport...you need to get your timing right to enjoy the view and visit likewise, due to the trusty Lano winds but if you’re heading to Lancelin over the Christmas break, it’s truly worth the look or adventure if you’re visiting, a snorkel on the west side of the island is worthwhile, if you pick your day right (accessible by footpath ONLY), and the beach on the east side is a lovely spot for a picnic and to take in the view of the mainland and sandunes. don’t forget to take out everything you bring and leave only footprints You’ll find @thejuicyboxlancelin at the north end of town from 26th Dec to 3rd January, so stop in for a refreshment if you’re staying in the area or passing by image courtesy @courtney.hooper

01.01.2022 EDWARD ISLAND ACCESS POINT RE-OPENED TODAY As of this morning the Shire has allowed access once more to Edward Island Point track just in time for Christmas...! The track was closed earlier this year after severe damage caused by storm surges. Works have recently been undertaken by the Shire to restore the track including segregating the fore dunes as a rehabilitation area. The Shire requests that all vehicles and pedestrians remain out of this area when using the track so that the dunes are able to be properly rehabilitated. The Shire is opening up the access responsibly in what is proposed to be an environmentally sensible manner. Our dunes are a good defence against coastal erosion and are one of several strategies the Shire employs. The track has a set designated area as does the rehabilitated area and we ask that users please respect this differentiation.
