16.01.2022 Looking for classy Christmas bubbles? Go for the Piper Heidsieck at $34.00. I have no connection with the producer or Dan Murphys, but this has been our house champagne for quite a while. By the way, the French pronounce it "Peeper", just as they pronounce Mot as "Mwet" - not Moe-wy. Check out http://winewise.net.au/ for Part 1 of our 112 wine Margaret River report. Its only $35 per year for a couple of thousand wine reviews and totally independent comment. No ads.
16.01.2022 WINEWISE CHAMPIONSHIP WHITE WINES - CONCLUSIONS RIESLING The standard of Australian riesling remains high. Despite global warming the traditional regions Clare and Eden Valley held sway here. But was our judging too conservative? Did we fail to give enough weight to the aromatic qualities, fineness and linearity of the Tasmanian rieslings? This will be a major topic for the inevitable post mortem that follows major events such as this. Tip: Orange, NSW is a riesling region on...Continue reading
14.01.2022 2016 WINEWISE Championship The sixth Winewise Championship will be judged in Canberra from 22-25 February. Its a unique wine event, bringing together about 400 gold medal winners from 35 qualifying shows over the past twelve months. The wines represent the best from 169 different producers representing six states of Australia. Some of the winemakers competing are: Andrew Thomas, Blue Pyrenees, Brokenwood, Coldstream Hills, Collector, De Bortoli, Domaine Chandon, First Creek,... Home Hill, Jim Barry, Larry Cherubino, Lerida Estate, Moppity Vineyards, Paringa Estate, Penfolds, Petaluma, Peter Lehmann, Ravensworth, Saltram, Seppelt, Seville Estate, Shaw + Smith, Singlefile, St Hallett, Taylors, Tahbilk, Tyrrells, Voyager Estate, Wolf Blass, Wynns, Xanadu, Yabby Lake and Yalumba. Instead of spending days dealing with seemingly interminable line-ups of wines from different and contrasting regions, the wines are tasted in groups no larger than six and simply ranked them in order of preference by each judge who will award five points to the best down to zero for the least. In the case of large large classes like chardonnay and shiraz, there will be a number of heats, semi-finals and a grand final. Forget scoring out of 20 or 100. It simply isnt necessary. When the brackets of wines are placed before each judge, a wealth of experience from all sides of the wine business will come into play. Winewise will represented by Lester Jesberg, Deb Pearce, Lex Howard and David Yeates. Lester has judged at well over 100 wine shows, chairing many, and Deb has been a regular on the show circuit for almost ten years, often filling the role of panel leader. Lex and David are both long-term Winewise panelists. Sophie Otton brings her own highly respected viewpoint to the table, having recently moved from the position of Wine Director for the Rockpool group to concentrate on wine consultancy and writing. From the winemaking side come Tim Knappstein, a genuine legend of the wine industry, and Canberra District leaders Nick OLeary and Clonakillas Tim Kirk. The results will be made available to Winewise subscribers on Monday, 29 February at http://winewise.net.au/

01.01.2022 Reviews of 119 pinot noir & shiraz have just been posted on http://winewise.net.au/ CONCLUSIONS PINOT NOIR Even though a 2014 wine was awarded the Best Pinot Noir medallion, the 2013s, as a group, were stronger. The use of whole bunches in fermentations was very common. Sometimes that procedure works. Sometimes it doesnt. Domaine de la Romane-Conti ferment with 100% whole bunches, but they have vineyards like La Tache and Romane-Conti to draw on. To ferment middle of the r...oad grapes with stems is asking for trouble. Weak colours and green stemmy characteristics are evidence of the folly of rushing into whole bunch fermentations when the fruit simply isnt up to it. Home Hill, Montalto, Paringa Estate and Yabby Lake were towers of strength this year, and we suggest that pinot noir fans should pay great attention to all four producers. SHIRAZ Whole bunches seem to have captured the imaginations of shiraz producers too. As Tim Knappstein quipped while judging shiraz, I wouldnt like to be selling crushers to shiraz makers at the moment. As with pinot noir, successful whole bunch fermentation of shiraz depends on the quality of the grapes. If whole bunch character sticks out like the proverbial sore thumb, there is clearly a lack of balance. Whole bunch fermentation is a useful winemaking tool, but like new oak, it can be overdone. We strongly suggest that the negatives and positives be weighed up. In many cases it would be wise to ferment some batches with whole bunches and use crushed grapes and whole berries in others. The aim should be to achieve subtle complexity. Although whole bunch is the latest trend, we strongly acknowledge the traditional styles that fared very well in the Championship. We always applaud progress and innovation, but sometimes the adage If it aint broke, dont fix it also holds true. See more
