21.01.2022 The National Apology came as a recommendation from the "Bringing Them Home" report, which was tabled in Parliament in 1997. It was the concluding publication of the National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from Their Families. The inquiry took evidence personally from 535 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and received hundreds of letters and testimonies from others. Many who could have provided evidence were unable due ...to travel, discomfort with the public nature of the inquiry or being still too frightened or traumatised to speak of their experiences. #TeacherResources #AboriginalPerspectives #AustralianTeachers #AustralianCurriculum

19.01.2022 David Unaipon was born on 28 September 1872 at what was then known as the Point McLeay Mission in the town of Raukkan, South Australia. He went on to become a successful writer, activist and inventor, contributed to Australian society and broke many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stereotypes along the way. The Point McLeay Mission Station was handed back to the Ngarrindjeri people in 1974 and was renamed Raukkan in 1982. #TeacherResources #AboriginalPerspectives #AustralianTeachers #AustralianCurriculum

18.01.2022 The National Apology is seen by many Aboriginal people as the first step in the many that are required for reconciliation & true recognition. While it did not change the pain & anger many experienced, & continue to experience, it did at least recognise that these had occurred. #TeacherResources #AboriginalPerspectives #AustralianTeachers #AustralianCurriculum

12.01.2022 There are many myths about violence against Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander women that simply aren't true. These myths make it difficult for the person experiencing abuse to seek help & for others to understand the real issues. Busting these myths & educating people about these realities is a critical step in changing attitudes & making sure that ourselves, our families & communities practice and promote respect and equality for all.
