23.01.2022 Being a self-confessed bird nerd, I very often find myself conversing with all manner of people about avian related subjects. I often relay to people how much I... love seeing the local flock of Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos fly over each day; they are just such incredible, magical birds. It is often relayed to me that the species must be doing well locally, as we are seeing more of them in the valley. Now, off the bat this assumption makes total sense, however the larger numbers being seen in and around Bellingen are not in fact a sign of them prospering in the local region, but actually the result of smaller flocks coming together as a result of the loss of suitable feeding and breeding habitat in the neighbouring fire devastated areas to the south, west and north of us. This loss of habitat has forced these smaller flocks to come together in the areas that were spared from the destruction of last spring and summer. So, far from being a good sign, the significantly larger numbers of these amazing birds that we are seeing is actually a very worrying one, that demonstrates the immense pressure that these and dare I say all other native species are facing, not just in our region, but all over our beautiful country. When these smaller flocks come together to form large flocks in areas that have traditionally supported a smaller number of birds, this also causes problems, as the competition for food and nesting sites is greatly increased, causing potential imbalances in the ecosystem. This is amplified further as a result of other species that are not normally encountered in a region moving in as a result of the loss of their own preferred habitat; we are also experiencing this in our region due to the extensive loss of habitat to our south, west and north. Our fauna is under immense pressure to survive at present, and in fact collectively the native species that call Australia home have never previously had to endure such a fight for survival. Literally, virtually all species are now threatened by loss of habitat, this is the sad reality. I don't like to be negative, but we really must acknowledge that we are currently in the midst of an extinction crisis in Australia and if we are to have any chance of reversing this trend we need to act fast, as time is not on our side - once a species becomes extinct, it is gone forever. The scale of the current destruction of habitat through the widespread clearing of land right across Australia is downright scary and on par with the worst offenders the world over; we talk about how bad countries like Brazil, Indonesia, New Guinea and the Congo etc are in terms of their treatment of the environment, when our own rate of deforestation is just as enormous. This is not a record that we can be proud of, in all honesty it is in fact downright scary and shameful. We must do better when it comes to protecting the incredible land that we are the very lucky custodians of. I live in hope that we can turn things around and work together for a brighter future. Conserving the incredible, life-giving native forests that we have left will benefit every inhabitant of this beautiful country, humans included. Take care and enjoy our beautiful shire.

19.01.2022 Process for securing yourself a baby from us: 1. Register your interest for the species (and sex of the baby) you want any time of year by messaging the page, calling our attached phone number, or emailing using the email address on the page. 2. When our birds nest and have babies we will contact you and either suggest: waiting for dna if you are after a specific sex OR pay your $50 deposit to secure your baby 3. Once a deposit is in place we are more than happy for you to co...me meet and bond with your baby. 4. Once your baby is weaned we will organize a pickup date where you get your new family member, a carry cage, and a harness. (Full payyment must be made prior to or on pickup) Things to note: - due to covid it is difficult to secure flights for birds to other states so it may be a longer wait for freight - gender of the babies is subject to nature and doesnt make a difference in the quality of pet although we do try our best to ensure everyone gets the sex of bird theyd prefer. (If a certain sex is needed for breeding purposes or to prevent breeding in pet homes we consider this a priority.) - the first deposit get first choice of baby and therefore sex.

08.01.2022 Herbs as medicine for companion parrots - a long read but worth it. Herbs have been used as medicine for tens of thousands of years and herbalism was one of the... roots of modern medical science. Today herbal medicine is considered complimentary medicine, i.e. to support modern medical science, and as alternative medicine. The industry is huge and herbal preparations are becoming very popular with bird owners too. Herbal treatment with whole herbs (such as teas) is in most cases safe and non-intrusive, and one can buy many herbal preparations for humans and dried whole herbs from places such as DisChem, as well as online. However, because birds can react to herbs in a different way to humans it is very important that one use preparations prepared by a qualified herbalist when one uses strongly medicinal herbs and/or concentrated remedies such as tinctures. The list below is split into three groups. The first group is common herbs that one can use freely with your birds as teas and added as appropriate to their food or water. The second group are strongly medicinal herbs that should only be prepared for use by a professional herbalist as they have specific ways of preparation, specific doses or times of treatment (eg. two weeks then stop or only use externally), side effects and/ or known interactions with other herbs that should not be combined. Certain herbs have very specific uses, for instance, red clover is best known as a treatment for menopause symptoms in humans as it has female hormonal action (isoflavones). It follows that its use in birds would be restricted. Herbalists train for years, think of them as professionals in the same league as pharmacists, for the same reasons. The third list contains herbs that should not be given to parrots at all. Examples of these include St. Johns Wort as one of its known side effects is photosensitivity and companion parrots in our country get exposed to a lot of indirect and direct sun as a rule, or Arnica, which can cause severe liver damage. List A: Safe in normal usage: Alfalfa, Aloe vera (leaf gel only), Basil, Bay Leaf, Cayenne and chillies generally (avoid super-hot ones like Habenero), Celery (seed and leaves, not stalks), Chervil, Chamomile, Chickweed, Chives (in moderation), Cinnamon (Ceylon not Cassia), Cloves, Coriander, Dandelion, Dill leaves, Fennel leaves, Garden Sorrel (Rumex not Oxalis), Flax-Seed, Ginger (in moderation), Hibiscus, Kelp, Lavender, Lemon balm, Lemongrass, Lovage, Marigold (Calendula, not Tagetes), Marsh-Mallow, Marjoram, Melissa, Mint, Moringa (leaves), Mugwort, Olive-Leaf, Oregano, Parsley, Passion-Flower/|Granadilla (leaves, flowers and fruit), Purslane, Roquette, Rooibos, Rose-Hip, Rosemary, Sage, Savory, Tarragon (in moderation), Turmeric, Thyme, Water-Cress. List B: Best used in preparations prepared by a qualified herbalist, and with birds in mind: Achillea/Yarrow, African Potato/ Hypoxis, Aloe vera bitters including Aloe lump/powder, , Astragalus, Borage, Burdock, Cats-Claw, Devils-Claw, Cancer-bush/Sutherlandia, Catnip, Echinaceae, Elderflower/berry, Elecampane, Garlic/Allium, Ginseng, Golden Rod, Jasmine (100 % jasmine flower tea is safe), Milk-Thistle, Mullein, Pau dArco, Raspberry Leaves, Pomegranate (dried peel), Red Clover, Wormwood/Artemesia, Valerian, Vervain, Witch Hazel. List C: Either known to be dangerous or potentially so, should not be used on parrots: Arnica, Chapparal, Coltsfoot, Ephedra, Germander, Ginkgo , Horse-Chestnut, Horseradish (including wasabi), Horsetail, Licorice (including the sweets!), Lobelia/Indian Tobacco, Nutmeg, Pennyroyal, Poppy (seed is safe) , Sassafrass, , Skullcap, St. Johns Wort/Hypericum, Tea Tree Oil (best to avoid scented essential oil in any event, aromatherapy in parrots is potentially extremely dangerous and should be undertaken only by professionals). The usual caveat's apply. Always use herbs that you know are grown naturally and not exposed to pesticides and environmental toxins, be sure of the identity of the herb you are using, and try to grow your own if feeding fresh! :) There are literally hundreds of plants used as medicine by people worldwide- but this does not mean that all of them can be given to birds. Also, remedies prepared for animals other than birds may not work on birds the same way. Birds are different! You are welcome to ask if you don't see something on this list, and I'll do my best to help. This article was written with holistic, science based herbal medical principles in mind. Homeopathic remedies are prepared differently, but the lines are often blurred in over the counter human alternative medicines. Complimentary Veterinarians may prescribe homeopathic, naturopathic as well as allopathic medicines in avian treatment, these are qualified doctors who have studied in the fields of both conventional and complimentary medicines and know precisely what they are prescribing Proofread by and edited with kind assistance from Margie Frayne, a herbalist with over forty years experience in human and animal preparations and the author of the Herbs for Birds range. 07.01.2022 Hey everyone, I just came back from overseas a few weeks ago. Left my parrots under the care of a neighbour, and two of my birds managed to fly away I wasnt ...told about it because my parents knew how upset I would be.. but its worse now because my chances of finding them are slim to none Anyway I lost my Ringneck mittu and my scaly lorikeet Harry. Harry is almost 10 years old, is really loud, can bite sometimes but hes really fun and charming and just wants attention to be on him 24/7. My Ringneck mittu is only 2 years old she says mittu when no one is watching, she loves to be petted and is scared of kids. Shes really sweet and never bites I hand raised her so shes really friendly with people and loves nuts and corn more than anything. They were last seen in Wiley Park area ( near the park ) If anyone has any information or has found a parrot resembling these two please contact me. Ive been missing them dearly.

07.01.2022 Some birds like it hot! Compared to mammals, birds are more tolerant of eating chili peppers. This may be due to a reduced number of taste buds or a difference ...in the way they sense capsaicin, the chemical in peppers that makes them hot. No matter the reason for this increased tolerance, many parrots love the addition of chili peppers to their diet. Chili peppers are rich in beta carotene, vitamin C, flavenoids, and a variety of minerals. Have you tried offering chili peppers to your parrot? #AAVEnrichmentTip See more
