This week we'll be featuring some Winmalee RFS members and how they can help you prepare for Bushfire season. "Get Ready Weekend" is this Saturday & Sunday. To find out where you can meet & chat to your local RFS members, visit the Winmalee Rural Fire Brigade page! How long have you been involved with the Winmalee RFS? I joined the brigade at 14 years old, and have been a member for 5 years ...now. What does the "Get Ready Weekend" involve and how can the community take part this year? Get Ready Weekend provides the community with an opportunity to engage with the local brigade, providing vital information about the upcoming fire season and how you can prepare for it. This year, Get Ready Weekend looks a little different for obvious reasons. There will be various pop-up stations around the community where people can interact with our members and seek all the necessary information in a COVID safe way. What do you think makes Winmalee special? Winmalee and surrounds is such a tight-knit community, which I think you will struggle to find anywhere else. It makes events like these such a pleasure. We have an extremely supportive community, and I wouldn't want to be a member anywhere else. Is the RFS station open to the community for advice throughout spring and summer? Our members are always happy to answer questions. We conduct brigade training twice a week, where plenty of people are available to answer questions. We also have a Facebook page and email where questions can be forwarded anytime.

12.01.2022 Friendly faces of Winmalee Since opening on 12 March this year, the Winmalee Neighbourhood Centre community shop has generated over $7,000, enabling them to support community programs including providing 200 food hampers to vulnerable families, and the launch of a frozen meal program. The shop has not only provided the community with affordable items like clothing, furniture, toys, books and more, but a friendly place to connect and chat. Tony will be available to chat to you about bushfire preparation at one of many locations in the local area this weekend, find out where > https://fal.cn/3amT2 How long have you been involved with the Winmalee Rural Fire Brigade? I have served with Winmalee RFB since 1993. Why do you enjoy being part o...f the Rural Fire Brigade? I like helping my community in emergencies and I enjoy the comradeship with people who value the work the RFS does for people. How can you assist the community in the lead up to Summer? I can assist the community by promoting the preparation of people’s properties and by encouraging people to have Fireproof plans for themselves and their families in the coming fire season. In the event of a fire, I would probably be working as a Community Liaison Officer, an Incident Management team member or a radio operator in a Divisional Command. What is your outlook for the upcoming bushfire season? The coming fire season does not look as dire as the 2019-20 fire season. However, that merely means that we expect the average number of fires. In the Blue Mountains, we have considerable fuel loads adjacent to the urban fringe where people live. Bushfires should always be expected.
