22.01.2022 The Cult of Greyhound "Personality" It seems that many adopters are still inadequately informed as to the nature and the nurture of greyhounds. The common misc...onception is to view our adopted greyhounds through the prism of what we have decided is a one-size-fits-all expectation of "personality" expression. That, upon having been adopted, the greyhound should instantly and without hesitation, accept and embrace us as his/her new caretakers. That the greyhound, despite having been purely purpose-bred and not to be a pet, should willingly and unabashedly shower us with gratitude for having the humanity to open up our heart and home to him or her, and behave in ways that we have come to expect from other canines who have been so fortunate. So it is no wonder that it sometimes becomes a major disappointment to us, when after 6 days, 6 weeks, or 6 months, our adopted greyhound has yet to fulfill our expectations, and become the ebullient, vivacious, effervescent character we may have been led (or led ourselves) to believe was inevitable---given the benefit and luxuries of our boundless creature comforts, affections and attentions. Every dog evolves as an individual "personality" over the course of time and throughout their lives. Greyhounds are no different from other dogs in that regard. What is different about them, is the unique canine culture into and within which they are born and raised. A canine culture into which they are entirely absorbed prior to being suddenly (and inexplicably to them) thrust into pet life. A canine culture which informs, nurtures and endows them with a highly evolved fluency in canine communication, pack etiquette and pack/colony dynamics. What some greyhounds experience when they are expected to act outside of the security of the pack or colony---where the individual might, quite understandably, have some trepidation or reservations with novel events and environments, however benign or well-meant---is anxiety at the least, and sometimes even degrees of withdrawal. It is not necessarily ingratitude, or even personal. When humans fail to (or refuse to) perceive the immutable effects of genetics, culture, colony, pack, and the handing down of collective consciousness thereof upon the greyhound---who, prior to having been adopted, was likely never without the company other greyhounds for even a few minutes----we sometimes experience a mutual understanding gap, and/or a failure to communicate. The individual greyhound, who may be a natural follower---reticent or unsure of how to act alone, outside of that pack or colony dynamic---can experience distress or sensory and perceptive overload, when exposed to novel events, situations and environments, to an extent that it can border on what we should view as a form of culture shock. Punctuality and routine are what the greyhound has learned to expect, within the social dynamic of the pack/colony in the kennel environs. It goes hand in hand with the mental and physical stimuli and nurturing, that abundant social interaction and physical activity provide. So, we should understand that not all greyhounds are comfortable at once, when separated from everything and everyone they have ever known---both canine and human---and thrust into novelty at every turn. A demonstrated feeling of discomfort or uneasiness is also a natural and often predictable "personality" expression. While it is not unreasonable to expect that eventually they will adjust to us, the road of least resistance is to meet them halfway along. And that journey begins in our own minds. copyright, 2021

17.01.2022 What does make a young, vigorous, energetic greyhound happy? Answer: Greyhounds love to run. Even the most radical of extremist leaders admit that fact. So th...e question remains: where should runners most safely run? On smooth, flat surfaces like manicured tracks or on unlevel ground filled with holes, tree roots, limbs, rocks, prickly plants, bushes, and all sorts of other dangerous ground clutter? See more
