23.01.2022 Core stability and back strength Back and abdominal strength are commonly referred to as core strength. Core strength is so important and used in every movement the dog performs, in agility take off, across the jump and landing turning, Good core strength helps the dog better because the dog can then collect, extend over the jump, can help their body take the jump better. There are various exercises that help increase core strength and stability Strengthening the rear end, t...hen helps improve the trunk control, improve coordination and help weakness in back and stomach muscles. It not only helps improve performance in agility, but dogs will stack better in the show ring, improved sit and drop in obedience, faster turns in lure coursing. Dogs prone to IVDD it helps strengthen the spinal muscles that helps reduce injury and can reduce the severity of disc disease. #winningtouchk9massage #winningtouchk9rehabilitation #ivddrecovery #ivddsucks #neurologicalphysiotherapy #neurologicalrehabilitation #corestrengthingexercises #caninecorestrengthening #backissuessuck #caninerehab #caninerehabtherapist #caninerehabaustralia #agilitydogs #agilitydogsofinstagram #obediencedogs #lurecoursingdogs #showdogsofinstagram

23.01.2022 I was looking at a way to help my website as during Covid I have been unable to go to the vets to promote my business. Unfortunately things happened and I had to postpone having it professionally done. But A lovely lady one Sunday afternoon spent three hours helping me go through in how to improve it. It is still a work in progress and it’s taking forever but this video is part of it so I’m posting it here first. I have become addicted to iMovie as I love it it has its downfa...lls but it’s free and it’s pretty easy to use. This is one video that has made the cut out of many I have fiddled with [email protected] #winningtouchk9massage #winningtouchk9rehabilitation #imovieedit #caninerehabilitation #caninemassagetherapist #therapeuticexercises #softtissuetherapies #caninelasertherapy #canineaccelltherapy #redlighttherapy #caninearthritis #canineneurorehab #canineorthopedictherapy #tplorecovery #ivddrecovery #caninehipdysplasia #canineelbowdysplasia #caninespondylosis #caninemassagetherapy #caninemassagetherapist #caninerehabtherapist #doggiephysicaltherapy #doggiephysio #caninecruciatedisease #caninepatellaluxation #caninebackinjury #softtissueinjury

23.01.2022 A very good article about conditioning and exercising your puppy. Has about an interesting study that had puppies exercising more than this 5 minute rule. Even if you aren’t going to do sport with your puppy, conditioning os a great way to give your puppy the best start and help prevent injuries occurring or if your dog does become injured then a better recovery and most often not as severe Kobie started his conditioning journey early #kobiepuppyconditioningjourney with basic exercises, surfaces and getting used to equipment. http://www.mcrehabilitation.com//everything-you-wanted-to-

22.01.2022 This is so true!!! When our old boy Connor would not settle down especially with his dementia and vestibular disease, I would take you out front I would go for a tiny little walk and let him sniff the flowers, leaves, grass didn’t matter if he did it the day before but still go and even spending 10 minutes with Tyler his brain out and he’ll go back and collapse it was better than any medicine he could ever have When in 2006 my previous girl nearly died I bought her a stroller, As she was very weak and couldn’t walk much and I will her up to a tree, flowers and just let us know if but just being outdoors just put a huge smile on my face to see the smile that was on her face Take time to see what’s around you, let them sniff and enjoy being outdoors

21.01.2022 This exercise helps with core strength, weight shifting, balance and it’s an isometric exercise. He is doing it on what is called a toe Matz. This is to help strengthen the ligaments around the feet and Carpus area. Jaxon had a dislocated toe many years ago and unfortunately the ligaments and tendons around the toe have torn and he was having issues so we needed to strengthen the toe and he also had an operation last year of a pad reconstruction due to what they thought was ...a tumour/cyst. This helps his toes grip when a leg is lifted up manually. His weight is not to be put into my hand but into his other feet. I do not want him to lean over to the side his back is to remain neutral and still have a good standing posture and adjust his weight so it is on the other legs and not leaning to the side. when lifting his leg, I curl his toes under as the aim is for all weight to be in the two remaining legs. You do not want him to put the weight onto your hand holding the leg. I at times will even use my fingers to have him balance I will then advances to a two Legged stand where the opposite legs are lifted . #winningtouchk9massage #winningtouchk9massage #toerehab #carpusrehab #caninerehabaustralia #caninerehabtherapist #doggiephysio #doggiephysicaltherapy #toematz #cockerspanielsofinstagram #cockerspaniel #threeleggedstand #corestrength #weightshiftingexercise #doggierehabilitation #caninerehabilitation

21.01.2022 One of the simplest and easiest no equipment and can be found in many places for canine conditioning and rehabilitation is hill walking. Hill walking strengthens muscles and improves a dog’s body awareness: both of which are essential for a symmetrical gait and reducing the likelihood of muscle strain. You can actually do Hill walking at nearly any time as it is suitable for most canine conditioning situations including: * Rehabilitation after an injury or an operation (depen...ding on stage of recovery, and advice of your rehabilitation therapist) * Conditioning for performance sports such as agility, flyball, retrieving * Keeping older dogs mobile to prevent slips and falls and maintain quality of life, * Strengthening supporting musculature (especially the hip extensors of gluteal and hamstrings) in dogs with chronic conditions like hip dysplasia, osteoarthritis and others How does hill walking benefit dogs? By walking on a hill you dog can get close to a full body workout as it works the rear legs, front limbs and the core muscles. This is because you can walk downhill, uphill, sideways across a hill and backwards up a hill Up hill walking walking up a hill, helps extends and flexes the hips joint which strengthens the muscles supporting the hip including the gluteals and hamstring muscles semitendinous and semimembranous. It also exercises the muscles that extends the knee. It also increases the range of motion in the shoulder, elbow, carpal joints of the forelimb. It is a good exercise for forelimb strengthening without p Down hill walking downhill walking is more an exercise for the four limbs of the shoulders and elbows which the dog uses as the brake. It Also strengthens the dogs quadriceps. You don’t only have to walk up or down a hill you can also walk zig zag, across the hill who has one leg in flexion and the other more extending, this is beneficial in encouraging weight bearing as it helps put more weight on the affected limb, or sidestepping/lateral walking , walking backwards. Many variations you can do which work various muscles. Some of these exercises are more conditioning or much later in the rehabilitation process and it is best to check with your rehabilitation therapist first as to what you can do with your dog if it is recovering from an injury. aids body awareness and coordination. You don’t need equipment to do workouts and you can do them whilst you’re away, all while you’re walking. I hear walking is a great way to help with your dogs body awareness and coordination. #winningtouchk9massage #winningtouchk9rehabilitation #hillwalking #cockerspaniel #cockerspanielsofinstagram #caninerehab #caninerehabaustralia #caninerehabtherapist #outdooractivities #hindlimbstrengthening #doggieconditioning #doggiephysicaltherapy

20.01.2022 Kobie Had shown that he was able to progress from rear foot targeting so our next aim was backwards walking. It is important once the dog has got the desired behaviour To not continually repeat that exercise but to either change to another behaviour or if they are able to to add a degree of difficulty. Our next step was for him to walk backwards to the target. Your pup/dog Must have a rear foot target for this... I started with a reminder if his rear foot targeting and then I moved him away a small distance and Guided him to the target at first Start very close to the target, after a couple of goes with guidance I then see if he’s able to do it and jackpot the reward once done Once he’s able to do the short distance it can only be 10 cm I then move up the distance to further away. I still at times guide him when I first moved him away and then get him to work it out. My hand is still giving him the signal at times Once he knows the behaviour then I add the word in for him it’s beep beep, for my older boy it is back. I do not add a word in until he understands the desired behaviour this is a rear leg strengthening exercises which helps strengthen quadriceps and hamstrings, with some glutes too I reset him by tossing food, For example if he sits on the rear target, sits walking back, he is reset. The reward is a jackpot when he does the desired behaviour next I will increase the distance to the rear target. If your dog does not walk back in a straight line you can put barriers up like cones to help guide him to walk straight. #kobiepuppyconditioningjourney #winningtouchk9massage #cockerspanielpuppy #puppiesofinstagram #puppyfitness #puppyfitnessjourney #puppyconditioning #backwardwalkingdog #cockerspanielsofinstagram #puppylife #caninefitness

19.01.2022 Can all animals benefit from Physical Rehabilitation? Most animals (dogs, cats, horses to name a few) can benefit from physical rehabilitation. Although physical rehabilitation is not a solution for every illness, it can aid in a quicker recovery from injury or surgery and it can be used to improve quality of life especially in older dogs and help them lead more active, healthier lives for longer.#winningtouchk9rehabilitation #winningtouchk9massage #fitdogsofinstagram #fitdogs #caninephysicaltherapy #physicaltherapy #caninerehabilitation #caninerehab #caninerehabtherapist #dogsofinstagram #caninerehabaustralia #doggierehabilitation #doggiephysicaltherapy #tplorecovery #ivddrecovery #hipdysplasia #patellaluxationrehab #elbowdysplasia #caninefracture

18.01.2022 Senior dogs need to stay active no matter their age, this can be made harder by dogs that are stiff and struggle to walk. Strategies to help older dogs stay mobile include strengthening exercises, balance and proprioception which is body awareness exercise and passive range of motion. Not only do these help dog stay mobile but teaching our dogs exercises also helps their mental stimulation and helps their brain Gentle stretching exercises that focus on the hips and sho...ulders also can be very beneficial in loosening up joints Massage is also great to improve circulation relax tense tight muscles especially those surrounding the joints and this can ease the stiffness of arthritis Laser can also help with pain relief, inflammation and relaxing tight muscles and help the joints move more freely Joint supplements can also be extremely beneficial for older dogs just as we need to stay active to fully enjoy life it’s also important for our older doggies to do the same If you have a seniors dog and want to find out more how to keep it in great shape, better quality of life, or you feel they are starting to get or have arthritis then contact me by email or phone to discuss how I can help you #winningtouchk9massage #winningtouchk9rehabilitation #caninearthritismanagement #caninearthritis #seniordogs #seniordogsrock #caninelasertherapy #caninemassage #caninetherapist #caninetherapy #laserfordogs #keepingdogsactive #goldenoldies #canineenrichment #mentalstimulationfordogs #caninerehabtherapist #caninerehabtherapy #caninerehabilitation #caninehipdysplasiadisease

16.01.2022 There was an article going around by a dog behaviourists which You might of seen about house sit can cause issues with your dog. Please read this great article which are from someone in the industry of rehabilitation and a vet that makes some valid points. I read the article that this was written about and the first thing I asked myself with what was this ladies credentials and experience in the rehabilitation and fitness world. It’s all good to say you’re a dog trainer or Be...haviourist which you can be qualified in but that doesn’t make you qualified in other industries. There’s many outdated dearest her which are is being promoted in the dog world in clubs and by trainers like the 5 minute exercise per month When reading articles before saying oh I better not do that with my dog find out the persons credentials, find out if they’re just doing it on their own experience or if they actually are acanine fitness trainer, rehabilitation therapist/that of physiotherapist as there is so much misinformation out there https://www.caninefitness.com/index.php

15.01.2022 Did you know you don’t need to go and spend lots of money to buy equipment to do conditioning. When I had a cleanup at home there was plenty here that I found that I went wow I can use this, foam mats, foam mat ramp, Box that we have used when VCRs existed. Even just broom handles, the garden hose can be used to step over for proprioception/Cavelletti’s. Very cheap you can make your own Cavelletti’s, plank of wood, blocks of wood for posture exercises, board that you can mak...e into a wobble board or even just to target to. To get a square elevated surface I tied up foam squares together to make various heights. That’s not to say I haven’t gone and bought equipment, I definitely have but Kmart and human physiotherapy places you can often find suitable equipment much cheaper and then I can add grip tape to give it a better surface. Crocodile grip tape from Bunnings and put on many surfaces helped with getting a better grip. conditioning does not have to be expensive or about having all the equipment you can do so much with minimal equipment and I always work with you with what you have and what you want to buy. #winningtouchk9massage #winningtouchk9massagerehabilitation #equipment #diyprojects #conditioning #physioequipment #physioequipmentdoesnthavetobeexpensive #makeityourself #planks #caninerehabaustralia #caninerehabtherapist

12.01.2022 Got a delivery the other day so decided to see if I put a box on the ground if Kobie would hop in which he did. So today had bit more fun doing it Ensure it’s a non slip surface Hold the box or ensure it isn’t moving jackpot reward if your dog isn’t as willing ... Note I released them and SLOWLY got them out, this was important for Kobie who is now 6 months if I had a box not as high would of been better I was teaching then stillness to stay there Good way of ensuring a tight sit teaches body awareness to can move up to sending them to the box. As mine do most things fast and full on, I didn’t want Kobie yet jumping in and out quickly great rainy day activity My older boy wanted a turn so not to miss out, think it’s more the treats though #kobiepuppyconditioningjourney #winningtouchk9rehabilitation #puppiesofinstagram #cockerspaniel #cockerspanielsofinstagram #cockerspanielpuppy #puppyconditioning #puppyfitness #puppyfitnessjourney #caninerehabtherapist #caninerehabaustralia #cantbelievehes6monthsalready #puppieslovelearning #doggieconditioning #bodyawareness #tightsit #puppiesoftheday #caninerehabilitation #anotheruseofabox #rainydayactivity

10.01.2022 Does your doggie love a good massage? Mine certainly do, when I did the practical part of my massage course the instructor jokingly said your dogs are massage whores, as they love it so much. Massaging can help to rehabilitate, reduce pain and swelling, heal strains and sprains faster, help find nigglies before they become worse and keep scar tissue to a minimum. There are many benefits of getting your dog massaged regularly which I will be posting about soon more about massage. Massage is an important hands on tool. Not only do I do rehabilitation but I also do massage/laser sessions which are great for older dogs performance dogs, nervous ones lets just say any dog. #winningtouchk9massage #caninemassage #caninemassagetherapy #caninemassagetherapist #dogslovemassagestoo #dogslovemassages #whodoesntlikemassages

09.01.2022 Once you have taught a tight sit, I move up to challenge that sit. Various ways of challenging getting them to hold the sit longer ... decrease the size of the surface they need to sit on for a tighter sit. You don’t want it too small though as they will tuck their front feet under the body too much and get a rounded back move the head around doing a figure eight or side to side throw food around various places to reset like the hands of a clock to get your dog to come and find the sit position move around the dog whilst in the sit rewarding for looking forward (we are working on that with our manners minder helps ) what we are doing here sitting on an unstable surface. 08.01.2022 BLIND AND DEAF DOGS Sometimes life throws us curveballs, My previous boy was deaf and my little princess my 14-year-old girl is now nearly blind, she is blind in one eye and minimal sight In the other and deaf which has bought some challenges in life one of which is continuing her rehab for her back, as she has IVDD and continuing keeping her fit and in great condition. Unfortunately somethings happen and for us trauma to her eye, caused some issues but she still loves her... physiotherapy/conditioning so now she is over three weeks postop from her emergency eye operation I have started doing physio again. It really does help if you have done some physiotherapy/conditioning previously so she is already used to the equipment and I have stuck to exercises that she knows and will probably only stick to those exercises. I also want her to get a feel for the equipment that we are using at the time as this will also help her understand what is required and placement of the feet I had lured her previously and now that is the way I have found that works for us the best, helping her use her smell senses and touch. As you can see at the beginning this was the first time for awhile that we had done any exercises since most of this is happened. She had little sight for awhile, And then unfortunately something happened which caused severe inflammation and nearly loss of all sight. I had to try and figure out a way with luring to get her to understand exactly the behaviour again and once she got it then she knew, but it also helps that these exercises we have been doing for a long time. At the moment the form is not as important to me is just getting her used to doing this with limited to no sight and placement of her feet and more of her body awareness With my old boy who died earlier this year it was much easier as everything was done by hand signals or with luring again, then we had the challenge with Fleur of partial blindness. She loves doing it, and it’s very important to me to still keep her mind active and this is one way of doing it. Never let obstacles get in your way. #winningtouchk9rehabilitation #blinddogsofinstagram #deafdogsofinstagram #cockerspaniel #caninerehabtherapist #caninerehabaustralia #blindanddeafdogsrock #stillllovinglife #ivdddog #ivddrecovery

06.01.2022 One of the challenges we face with older dog is is that with ageing it can lead to the vicious cycle of decreasing muscle strength, increase in muscle stiffness, loss of balance and less body awareness, as a result they tend to be more inactive and can gain weight which adds stress to those joints because they no longer will be supported by adequate muscle mass. But there is great news for your older pet there are great benefits from anti ageing activities such a short freque...nt walks this also is beneficial as it pertains a healthy heart and of course gets us much further to this we need to walk also. In addition there are also exercises specifically designed to maintain strength, flexibility and balance. 05.01.2022 This is a great exercise I use in rehab from various injuries and also conditioning in my dogs for flexion of the front and rear legs Kobie gets into places and has to crawl out showing me for a while we can decrease the height and could even go to crawling especially since he’s 7 months but he’s also do naughty!!! You do not need equipment you can use a chair, your legs, table. Most of my clients don’t have this equipment so a broom handle or two across tables, chairs depe...nding on the height of your dog As a puppy I do not want him crawling and his stomach close to the ground yet start so that he can walk under the poles, i usually start with one pole or two close together Increase the distance by adding another pole or moving it further away decrease the height slightly so that there is slight flexion in their legs that they have to bend under to get under the pole, decrease the space between them back to the original or You can go back to one pole. Increase the distance between them again continue to lower the poles or can use chairs or your legs making sure that you are not going to low and that your puppy is not crawling. my aim depends on what I want to achieve limbo is when I want some flexion. Crawling Where the stomach is nearly touching the ground has much more flexion. Even though Kobie does crawl on his own The height he goes under is usually about shoulder height for him, slowly lowering it. #kobiepuppyconditioningjourney #winningtouchk9massage #winningtouchk9rehabilitation #puppyfun #puppyfitness #puppyconditioning #cockerspanielpuppy #puppiesofinstagram #caninerehabtherapist #caninerehabilitation #havingfunwithmypuppy ##7monthsold #puppylove #puppyoftheday #cockerspaniellove

03.01.2022 This is so true so much And our dog industry is unregulated which doesn’t need to be changed. When I was looking for a puppy preschool for my puppy and I didn’t want online but face-to-face and restrictions were easing. I came here and do recommend Kirsten but I also looked at another one and it rang alarm bells when they had in week 4 teaching puppy’s to sit pretty. Some countries have banned this more importantly the strain it can foot on the lower back and they are natural position ideas and teaching a 14 week old pup something advanced but unnatural like rang alarm bells as to how qualified they were and in what. Too many I have read dog trainers are giving advice, videos and putting in classes conditioning exercises that they have no training in Research is so important

02.01.2022 I want my pup Kobie to do agility and flyball most importantly he’s a member of our family but I also want him to do some activity to keep him active and have fun and develop our bond more When he reached 6 months I went and got his gait tested @sash_rehab . This picks up any abnormalities in the gait, is he loading and weight bearing on each leg the same, how much force is being put onto each leg. Picking up any differences in his gait early means that we can pick up any is...sues that may be occurring whilst he’s young and before they hopefully get worse. It means we can either do diagnostics or create a program to help fix these muscle imbalances. This works for any age if you think your dog is walking incorrectly, lame, shortened stride. Whilst he didn’t get 100% he was pretty close and we have to take into the reading 1. He’s young and it’s his first time so he wasn’t walking straight, lead pulling 2. He was looking at me and/or around so his weight was being shifted On top of the gait rite we then tested his range of motion and then could measure joint angles and muscle mass/girth circumference. This is always done afterwards because if the dog is hurt or sore and it agrevates/worsens it then it can give an incorrect reading. Once he reaches two we will test his gait again. My other dogs have theirs tested also so we can pick up lameness we might not see, how they are weight bearing and helps to see if we will add challenges into their exercises to make it harder. As my boy is an agility dog, if he has time off for agility. I will get his gait tested prior to competing and increasing his exercises to get to competition level If you are wanting to do any sport or just want to see how your dog’s gait I highly recommend getting it tested. #kobiepuppyconditioningjourney #winningtouchk9rehabilitation #gaitrite4dogs #cockerspanielpuppy #puppyfitness #agilitydoginthemaking #puppyoftheday #puppyconditioning #caninerehabaustralia #caninerehabtherapist #puppylove #puppyoftheday #havingfuntryingtowalkproperly #cockerspanielsofinstagram #cockerspanielmoments #
