25.01.2022 Women’s Health Week is now well underway! Some of our residents at our Williamstown Hostel kindly shared what they do to stay happy and healthy. I enjoy being involved in activities. Art, bingo and using the virtual reality goggles, plus keeping in touch with friends and family using Zoom and social media helps me with my mental health. Anne (pictured). I try to do every activity that recreation offer. I take a walk outdoors every day. I enjoy assisting staff and arrangi...ng flowers for tables. These things help me with my mental health and help me meet people. Terry I do lots of crosswords to help keep my brain active. 23.01.2022 Although the concert halls are closed, the show must go on! Residents at Delahey and people who use Wintringham’s services in the community tuned in for a special cultural Zoom performance organised by the Melbourne Recital Centre. Even though we weren’t able to come together as a large group, we were still able to connect with the music. The performance felt very personal, and the audience was able to ask questions of the performers. Joy from Delahey even asked for an encor...e! says Recreation Coordinator Nicole. Thank you Melbourne Recital Centre for such a wonderful performance! #humansofwintringham #musictoourears

22.01.2022 Do you have some spare time on your hands? Consider joining Wintringham’s Pen Pal Club! The Pen Pal Club is a new initiative that invites people to send letters and cards to people who use Wintringham’s services. When received residents are welcome to respond to the letters. The Pen Pal Club is all about community connections and staying in touch, and it’s rewarding for both participants, especially throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, says Volunteer Coordinator Laureen. ... Thank you to all our pen pals for sending through such gorgeous creations! If you’d like to get involved, email Laureen at [email protected]. #volunteer #penpals

22.01.2022 Please note: this photo was taken in late June, before masks became compulsory on 22 July. What’s your favourite game to play with others? Malcolm asked Recreation Officer Adam to play a game of dominoes with him on a gorgeous day, before deciding to switch to poker instead.... Judging by Malcolm’s smile, we think he might have had a pretty good hand! #humansofwintringham #pokerface #isotime

22.01.2022 It's lovely to see some of our residents' families supporting them from afar. Helen's youngest sister Janet lives interstate and loves sending her surprise packages. This time, it was a set of new winter clothes! Inside the box were some trackies, hats, and a nice black coat which is her favourite. We think Helen looks great in her new outfit, love your work Janet!... #humansofwintringham #payitforward

22.01.2022 You know it’s going to be a special day when Batman and the Queen of Hearts show up to work at Gilgunya! To boost the morale of staff and residents, Gilgunya has decided to host a monthly dress-up day. Staff and residents were all dressed for the occasion, with lots of colour and some interesting characters to be seen. The day brought plenty of smiles and laughter for both staff and residents.... #humansofwintringham

20.01.2022 Today is RUOK? Day. Take some time out to consider your own mental health, and that of those around you. Here are the signs to look out for if someone needs extra support: - What are they saying? Do they seem moody, irrational, unable to switch off, concerned about the future, concerned that they’re a burden, or seem to feel that they’re trapped or in pain?... - What are they doing? Are they becoming withdrawn, losing interest in what they used to love, unable to concentrate, less interested in their appearance and hygiene, behaving recklessly, or changing their sleep patterns? - What’s going on in their life? Are they going through a break-up, health issues, work issues, financial difficulties, or have suffered a loss? If you’ve noticed some of the signs above, why don’t you reach out and ask R U OK? Read more about the signs and how you can help here: www.ruok.org.au/signs #ruok

19.01.2022 Spring has officially sprung, and flowers are starting to bloom! It’s the perfect time to go out for a walk in the sunshine. Recreation Officer Bella picked these flowers around Lionsville to brighten up a residents’ home. Do you have a favourite flower?... #humansofwintringham #springhassprung

18.01.2022 Happy 31st birthday, Wintringham! Today we celebrate our history and humble beginnings 31 years ago today. CEO/Founder Bryan Lipmann AM created Wintringham after becoming frustrated watching elderly men and women die in homeless persons’ night shelters, unable to access mainstream aged care services. The company was named Wintringham to pay homage to Tiny Wintringham, a resident at the original Gordon House night shelter in the 1960s. When the owners of the property wanted to... close it down, Tiny made sufficient fuss that the State Government was forced to build another Gordon House for Tiny and his comrades. Tiny’s courage, determination and success in the face of insurmountable obstacles continues to inspire us all to this day. #happybirthday #31years

18.01.2022 Residents at our Gilgunya site had a lovely time celebrating Father’s Day on Sunday. The recreation team surprised the fathers at Gilgunya with presents in the morning. Later on, the residents enjoyed an afternoon tea where they shared memories and photos of their children. Some of the fathers received calls from their family wishing them a Happy Father’s Day. Resident Costa received a gift in the mail from his family and was able to open it in front of them over Zoom! He was... thrilled to be able to see his family on the screen, and after opening his gift, he held his hands over his heart as he thanked them. #humansofwintringham #fathersday

18.01.2022 Residents and staff at our Port Melbourne Hostel received a lovely surprise when neighbours left six bunches of flowers (one for each house) and a note at their door. Over a dozen households in the area contributed to the gesture, taking the time to write messages of appreciation for residents and staff in the note. The local families in your area are thinking of you and sending you our heartfelt wishes during these times. We hope that these flowers help put a smile on your ...face. Their surprise certainly put a smile on the faces of all at Port Melbourne. Thank you to all who contributed! #randomactofkindness #loveourneighbours

16.01.2022 While all the art galleries are closed, why not create your own? Our Williamstown site recently held their very own Winter Art Show, where they displayed residents’ artworks in the hallway for all to admire. The artworks included some that were submitted to Wintringham’s online Art Space 2020 (www.art.wintringham.org.au) and others that were created by the residents either individually or in their art groups.... Glen exhibited some of his artworks and really enjoyed seeing the exhibition. It is inspiring to see something different. It makes you feel good! says Glen. To provide everyone with a chance to see the artworks, Recreation Officer Zoe recorded and edited a video for us. #humansofwintringham #artexhibition #weloveart

15.01.2022 Art can be the perfect outlet to express our feelings and frustrations! Eunice Seddon Recreation Officer Liz drew this piece and named it COVID Scream. Resident Patricia added masks to the drawing and renamed it Screaming for Love + Happiness + Peace for the World. We hope that Patricia’s wish comes true. We love your creativity and self-expression through art Liz and Patricia!... #humansofwintringham #covid19australia #artwithmeaning

15.01.2022 Happy National Dog Day! Billy came to Community Housing & Support Manager Tracey 10 months ago after the passing of a resident at Delahey. He had some skin issues at first, but with some love and care from his new family, he is now well on the mend! As you can see, Billy is loving his new life with Tracey! ... He loves us working from home it reminds him of living with his old owner! Billy loves hiking now, and adores his older brother Gollum, says Tracey. Do you have any dogs of your own? 14.01.2022 Gilgunya resident Clynton moved into the home at the beginning of the pandemic and had not been able to see Hayden, his long time community volunteer, since he arrived. They recently reunited in person, and they were both so happy to see each other! Hayden has done all his COVID-19 training and met all of Wintringham’s requirements to resume volunteering in person. Clynton is already looking forward to his next visit. #humansofwintringham #volunteering

14.01.2022 Thank you to MakersWindow for making and donating these lovely masks to our Lionsville office staff! Recreation Officer Bella came across a social media post about the masks and asked if they had any that our staff at Lionsville could use. Volunteers Shelley, Monica and Georgia then made a whole heap of them! The best part of receiving the donation was the sense of community and connection that came from it, especially during this challenging time. I picked some flowers and ...produce from my garden to donate back to MakersWindow for other community members, says Bella. The masks are made according to DHHS guidelines and are worn by Lionsville staff while they are working in the office. #community #payingitforward

14.01.2022 Happy Birthday to our Ron Conn home! The site celebrated its 15th birthday yesterday, and they certainly showed us all that COVID-19 is no barrier to having a good time. The residents enjoyed a special meal and a drink of their choice, finishing off with chocolate mud cake (with the Wintringham logo on top of course!) for dessert. While they ate, the residents listened to 50s, 60s and 70s rock music over YouTube and socialised with each other from a distance. ... Wintringham CEO/Founder Bryan Lipmann AM even joined the celebrations over Zoom, appearing over the site’s big screen, and later being taken around on a laptop to say hello to each of the residents individually. It was a great day, it was just so bright and lovely, especially to see the residents all socialising with each other from a distance, says Acting Recreation Coordinator, Catherine. I think they got the most fun out of seeing staff being silly in their costumes! #humansofwintringham #isobirthday

14.01.2022 Glenyce usually enjoys colouring in during her spare time, but has expanded to pom-poms since meeting Community Recreation Officer Fiona. She loves bright colours, and this is reflected in both her colouring in and her pom-pom making. Glenyce’s goal is to make enough pom-poms to create a bunting to hang across her window. #humansofwintringham #pompoms #colourfulcrafts

14.01.2022 After 28 days of no new COVID-19 cases in Victoria, staff at our residential aged care facilities are no longer required to wear face shields! 11.01.2022 Sadly, one of our Williamstown Hostel residents, Bob passed away in May. Bob loved travelling and in recent years had budgeted for an annual holiday. Back in February, before Bob passed, he managed to go on one last adventure, when he took a cruise to Tasmania with carers Lisa and Melinda. The cruise was four days, stopping in Burnie, Hobart and Port Arthur before returning to Melbourne. Bob had never been to Tasmania before, so was very excited to go! He also really wanted ...to get back on a ship as he used to be a cray fisherman in his younger days for two weeks at a time in the middle of winter. Bob said that the trip was very exciting, a real pleasure and having a holiday and cruising is never long enough. He also really enjoyed eating New Zealand ice cream and all the meals on board. We’re glad that Bob had a good time on his final adventure. We would like to express our deepest condolences to Bob’s partner Nola, and his sister Mary. Rest in Peace Bob. #humansofwintringham #RIPBob

11.01.2022 Staff at Gilgunya always see Bob looking onto the street. This is where Bob has spent many an afternoon while under COVID-19 restrictions, watching the world go by and connecting with his local neighbours who pass him by every day. "I just watch cars and people hoping they might stop and chat and they usually do.... What a lovely way to spend an afternoon! #humansofwintringham #connectingcommunities #cityofmoreland

Thank you for your hard work and generosity, Susan, the masks look amazing!... #humansofwintringham #kindness

11.01.2022 With the current COVID-19 restrictions in Victoria, it’s been tough for some of our residents to keep in touch with family and friends. With the help of our recreation staff, Gilgunya residents have been able to connect with their loved ones over the phone or online video call. Some of the residents are loving the new technology!... #humansofwintringham #covid19australia #keepingintouch

10.01.2022 Although Wintringham’s mission has remained the same since its inception, a lot can change in 31 years. For example, did you know: - We now support over 2000 homeless or at risk residents and clients throughout Victoria every day.... - Although we’ve always operated in Victoria, we’re expanding over the Bass Strait, with services in Tasmania set to be available from late next year. - We’ve grown from just one employee to over 730, and we’re still growing! We can’t wait to see what the future holds for Wintringham. Here’s to the next 31 years! #humansofwintringham #happybirthday #31years

10.01.2022 "All you have to do is just get comfy in your seat, close your eyes and open your ears. Then you’re taken away. It’s beautiful." Typically, Delahey resident George would get on a bus with nine other residents to attend concerts in-person at the Melbourne Recital Centre. However, with COVID-19 changing our lives earlier this year, the Inventi Ensemble very kindly performed for Delahey residents over Zoom instead. George and Recreation Coordinator Nicole spoke to The Age about... the performance and the positive effects of music for older people during the pandemic. 09.01.2022 Who doesn’t love a nice cup of coffee in the morning, especially delivered straight to your door! To check in on residents during isolation, staff at Delahey came up with the genius idea of turning their coffee machine into a coffee cart. The team loaded up their cart and went around to all 124 units which took them three hours! The residents were really happy to see them and to be able to say hello. It was fantastic to be greeted with so many smiling faces along the way,... says Recreation Coordinator Nicole. #humansofwintringham #coffeetime #keepingintouch

09.01.2022 Although the spring racing carnival is drawing to a close, the memories of horses run much deeper for Williamstown resident, Wayne. Wayne was a strapper and worked in the horse racing industry for 35 years. He wrote this story in memory of his favourite horse, Creamy. There was something special about this horse. ... I would ride him to school bare back. He’d wait for me. No need to tie him up. When I’d whistle, he’d come to me. He’d pick me up from school and take me home. Creamy was a brumby. Untamed. No one went near him, except me. He was 1415 hands tall. No one knows where he came from. We connected. His eyes met mine and a calming connection was made. I was 4.5 years old. When I was 5, we moved away and I had to say goodbye. #humansofwintringham #springcarnival #horseracing

08.01.2022 Since COVID-19 has hit the headlines, residents at Eunice Seddon have been honing their art and craft skills by exploring new art projects each weekend. Di, a keen artist calls it an Art Frenzy, and we think she’s right on the money! We love your creations, Eunice Seddon, keep it up! Maybe some can be entered into next year’s Art Space 2021! #humansofwintringham #isoartandcraft

08.01.2022 The message for this year’s day is there’s more to say after R U OK. Although asking the initial question is important, it’s also important to keep the conversation going. R U OK Day recommends the follow steps when having a conversation with someone who may be struggling: 1. Ask RUOK 2. Listen with an open mind... 3. Encourage action you could ask what you can do to help them, what they’ve done in the past to manage similar situations, or encourage them to speak to a health professional, 4. Check in with them later See the R U OK website for more conversation tips and resources: https://www.ruok.org.au/how-to-ask #ruok #theresmoretosay

06.01.2022 Gilgunya takes great pride in their garden. So much so that their recreation garden have been Statewide finalists in the Victoria in Bloom Gardening Competition two years in a row! Many of the staff and residents pitch in with the gardening. Ernie sweeps every morning, Graham waters religiously (even when it’s raining), Anthony takes care of the veggies, and Sue takes care of the herbs. On sunny days, residents like to gather around the garden, as it’s nice and bright. What... a brilliant way to spend this lockdown the garden will be even more amazing in Spring! #humansofwintringham #greenthumbs

06.01.2022 The Richmond Tigers play against Gold Coast this evening, and we reckon we know which team Ron will be cheering for! Which footy team do you barrack for? If you don’t have a team, there’s no time like the present to choose one! #humansofwintringham #gotiges

05.01.2022 Spring has come to Ron Conn! Since outings are limited at the moment, staff and residents decided to bring spring indoors. Recreation staff went around and asked residents what spring meant to them. Most residents thought of flowers and nature. Jean, who grew up on a dairy farm, suggested birds. With the content of the collage decided, staff and residents got busy cutting, gluing, colouring in, and putting the collages together. There are two collages, one for each dining roo...m. Residents loved being a part of the activity and seeing the collages grow. #humansofwintringham #springhassprung

05.01.2022 Following on from their Hawaiian weekend, Eunice Seddon has kept up with their theme of going around the world by holding a French weekend! The residents tackled French quizzes and words, watched French movies and enjoyed an afternoon tea. Recreation staff posted French words around the facility written on French flags. Resident Solomon dressed for the occasion by wearing his red, blue and white beanie, although the real hit was Lyn’s French masquerade mask!... Eunice Seddon Resident Chris says it was a great weekend, with many activities to get involved in. I loved the movie ‘Chocolat’, the quizzes and French facts. The afternoon tea on the Sunday with French music and cheese was very relaxing too, says Chris. Recreation Officer Liz says that the weekend was all round ‘fantastique’, and we have to agree! #humansofwintringham #frenchescape

04.01.2022 Eunice Seddon resident Denis spent much of his life in Hungary. Every day, Denis says good morning to everyone, so the recreation staff decided to return his greeting by putting up a photo of his favourite city, Budapest with Hello Denis, good day in Hungarian. Denis was delighted when he saw it and said that’s fantastic. Recreation Officer Liz thinks it was a perfect moment seeing Denis smile! #humansofwintringham #budapest #itsthelittlethings

03.01.2022 Today is the first day of Dementia Action Week, and we’re excited to announce that Wintringham’s first Specialist Dementia Care Unit has opened its doors! The Unit is part of the Australian Government’s Specialist Dementia Care Program (https://www.health.gov.au//specialist-dementia-care-progra), and will care for people with severe behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia. The unit will offer transitional care, aiming to reduce and stabilise symptoms of dementia... to enable residents to be moved to less intensive care accommodation. The unit is located in Flemington, adjacent to our McLean Lodge, and will house up to six people at a time. We’re excited to see this investment in supporting marginalised people, who are in great need of specialist support which will allow them to live comfortably and with dignity, said Bryan Lipmann AM, CEO / Founder of Wintringham. Thank you to the Australian Government Department of Health for funding Wintringham to deliver this much-needed service. Find out more: https://bit.ly/3cb9DXy #dementiaactionweek

01.01.2022 Why have a plain apron when you can have an AC/DC apron instead? Knowing that Colleen is a big fan of AC/DC, Recreation Officer Heather took her apron home to personalise it. Heather purchased a t-shirt from Big W, cut out the logo and sewed it on. Colleen loves her revamped apron, especially knowing that Heather made it for her.... #humansofwintringham #ACDCforever #thunderstruck *please note: this photo was taken in mid-June, before masks were made compulsory in Metropolitan Melbourne on 22 July.

01.01.2022 This Women’s Health Week, we’ve asked some women who use our services to share with us what they do to stay happy and healthy. Merryn finds walking to the beat of blues and soul music (especially from Earth, Wind & Fire) great for taking away any negative emotions. She has also recently started Lite and Easy, which she finds helps her to eat healthily, especially when life gets in the way!... Merryn also keeps connected to others by participating in several singing and social groups. Merryn, your motivation and dedication is amazing! #humansofwintringham #womenshealthweek
