To encourage loans and boost the economy, Treasurer Josh Frydenberg announced an overhaul of responsible lending laws. Lenders will be subjected to less onerous credit rules. Minister for Communications Paul Fletcher announced a $4.5 billion investment in the National Broadband Network (NBN) to facilitate access to faster broadband speeds for eight million more Australians. The investment will support as many as 25,000 jobs over the next two years as the fibre-to-node rollout is extended along streets. The $550 a fortnight coronavirus supplement to the JobSeeker payment was reduced to $250 on Thursday. Looking ahead - Federal Parliament will return on Tuesday 6 October for the Federal Budget. 10.01.2022 Weekly Political Wrap Federal Government announced a $1.3 billion Modern Manufacturing Strategy ahead of next week’s Budget. Six priority manufacturing areas have been identified - food and beverage; recycling and clean energy; resource technology; medical products; defence; and space. Within the strategy are three funding elements including a $1.3 billion Modern Manufacturing Initiative; a $107 million Supply Chain Resilience Initiative; and a $52.8 million Manufacturing M...odernisation Fund. Federal Government announced their Digital Business Plan as part of the JobMaker program. Under the Plan, $800 million will be invested in initiatives to support business adopt new digital technologies. Federal Government announced businesses with an aggregated annual turnover between $10 million and $50 million will have access to up to ten small business tax concessions. The Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety released a report on the COVID-19 pandemic in aged care. The report makes six recommendations and identifies four areas for immediate action including funding, allied health and mental health services, an aged care plan and the establishment of a national aged care advisory body and infection control procedures. Minister for Aged Care and Senior Australians Richard Colbeck launched the Younger People in Residential Aged Care (YPIRAC) Strategy. The Strategy aims to reduce the number of younger people living in residential aged care and includes $10.6 million for a national network to help younger people find accommodation. Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced the QLD/NSW border will reopen on 1 November. The Palaszczuk Government has awarded final approval to the $1 billion Olive Down coal mine in Central Queensland. Construction activities can now begin and the project is set to create 1,000 local jobs over its 79-year life. The Queensland Government will invest $30 million for two new wharves at the Port of Cairns and a business case to develop the area as a centre for maintaining and repairing large defence vessels. The funding is an initiative of the Cairns/FNQ Regional Recovery Action Plan. Looking ahead Next week, Federal Parliament will return for Budget Week. The National Skills Commission published the 2020 Australian Jobs report, highlighting occupations and industries that remained resilient during the COVID-19 pandemic.... Minister for the Environment Sussan Ley announced environmental approval for Santos’ Narrabri Gas Project in the Gunnedah Basin in NSW. The project is subject to a number of approval conditions to protect groundwater, regional biodiversity and local communities. The Commonwealth and Victorian Governments each committed $2 billion in funding for the Geelong Fast Rail Project, the first of its kind in Australia. Construction is set to begin in 2023. Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews also jointly announced the route for the Melbourne Airport Rail Link project. The Queensland budget is set to be handed down on Tuesday 1 December. Victorian Treasurer Tim Pallas handed down his State Budget, forecasting a net operating deficit of $23.3 billion in 2020-21. NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro released the Strategic Opportunities for Gas Statement, which considers options for expanding domestic gas production in NSW and further exploration in far western NSW. WA Premier Mark McGowan welcomed the announcement by APA Group to construct a new 580-kilometre pipeline to connect the gas fields in the Perth Basin to the Goldfields region. Minister for Energy and Emissions Reduction Angus Taylor and Victorian Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio announced the first stage of an agreement to underwrite early works to progress the Victorian to New South Wales Interconnector West project. PM travelled to Japan to sign a trade deal named the Reciprocal Access Agreement which allows more joint military exercises throughout the Indo-Pacific, including in the hotly-contested South China Sea. Chief of the Defence Force General Angus Campbell released the findings into alleged misconduct by Australian Special Forces in Afghanistan. The Inquiry found credible information relating to 36 matters in which 39 Afghan prisoners or civilians were unlawfully killed The Government released the Productivity Commission’s inquiry report into mental health which estimated the cost of mental health on Australia’s economy is approximately $200 billion per year.
