20.01.2022 The frontier wars between indigenous Australians and the European settlers have been in the news again lately. One thing that is commonly said, even on SBS, is that this is an aspect of Australian history that has not been taught in schools. Traditionally, however, conflict on the frontier has been part of the Year 9 History curriculum around Australia for many years. I know this because I taught it from 1983 onwards, and I was around when the Victorian and national curricula were established. For that matter, I can remember learning about it in primary school around 1960. Forcible dispossession has also featured in a number of other subject areas. The worksheet below is from my outdoor education workbook, Footprints, that was first published in 2004.

18.01.2022 So far, 10 climbers have died on Everest in this current climbing season. It is difficult not to be cynical about anyone who would queue in this manner just to bag a peak, albeit the highest peak on the planet. Bob Brown once said, we should all have a place that we won't visit. Mine is right there in the photograph.

16.01.2022 wipeout poobah Robbo Bennetts has been a part of a crew that has operated a not-for-profit called desert2surf for the past ten years or so. desert2surf has run stand-up paddling programs with indigenous kids in the Territory and brought kids down here to surf. Now, desert2surf is pulling the pin, but not without leaving countless memories. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/

11.01.2022 There have been a number of comments in the media recently to the effect that the frontier wars are not taught in Australian schools. This worksheet is one of the 90 worksheets in Footprints outdoor education workbook which we first published in 2004. It is an eye witness account of a pitched battle between a squatter's party and local indigenous people who were trying to protect their birthright along the Broken River in north-eastern Victoria. It is not just a "boy's own story" about men in battle. The really amazing thing is what the indigenous women and children did during the battle.

08.01.2022 A number of years ago, Wipeout Publications took delivery of an order of Footprints that we could not sell. There were three main problems: 1) the paper used had not been recycled (as we had advertised); 2) one of the 90 worksheets was missing altogether; and 3) the font in one or two page headings was not recognised by the printer's computer. We now use a different local printer who we would highly recommend. Over time, we have progressively been giving away the faulty copie...s of Footprints. If you or someone you know runs a cash-strapped and/or inspiring outdoor education program in the greater Melbourne area, or are prepared to collect, we are happy to give away one class set of these workbooks to any deserving school or program. You can also buy Footprints as a hard copy or downloadable PDF through our website: wipeout.com.au. The recommended retail price has not changed in over 10 years. Contact us by emailing [email protected].

02.01.2022 Occasionally, we read about nasty accidents that happen with camp stoves on school camps. I have pasted a link below to an incident that has been reported in th...e media. Generally, schools choose Trangia-type stoves because they are fuelled with methylated spirits which is not as volatile as some other fuels. Some time ago, one of my outdoor education assistants accidentally mixed shellite and methylated spirits when he was decanting fuel into fuel bottles that the students had to carry. The fireworks were pretty spectacular, but luckily no-one was hurt. I have never personally used shellite stoves, preferring to use a bottled gas adaptor with my Trangia, but I have seen at close quarters a hole burnt in a tent roof when camping in the snow. I think there is an argument for teachers not to carry shellite stoves when they camp with school kids. I have also attached a worksheet from our workbook Footprints that is to do with Trangia safety. https://www.abc.net.au//children-suffer-serious-/10491078
