24.01.2022 Have you have had a peek at the Stand Bi Us program? The conference brings together bi+ organisations and people across Aus & NZ to celebrate bi+ community, visibility and expression. Stand Bi Us kicked off this arvo and runs 'til Sunday, with all kinds of online meet up and discussion spaces.

24.01.2022 This is worrying but not surprising. Women are more likely to be in insecure work, much more likely to be doing lion's share of domestic and caring work at home, and are experiencing family violence in greater numbers during COVID-19 lockdowns. Women's Health Victoria's Dianne Hill says: "The COVID-19 recovery must avoid further entrenching gender inequality by boosting investment in childcare, social services, mental health support and jobs for women." We support the call fo...r a COVID-19 response and recovery that addresses the pandemic's unique impact on women. If this article brings up anything for you, you can contact Beyond Blue's coronavirus mental wellbeing support service on 1800 512 348. Lifeline is here for people in crisis at 131 114. WIRE can also provide support, information and referral on any issue facing women, nonbinary and gender diverse people. Call (1300 134 130), email ([email protected]), or web chat us (www.wire.org.au), Mon-Fri, 9-5pm.

22.01.2022 JobSeeker payments are being reduced soon and you might be feeling anxious or stressed about what that means for you. Our financial resources page has heaps of info on the support available for bills, debts loans, rent, super and other issues you may be facing.

22.01.2022 More employers are eager to support employees experiencing family violence but victim-survivors still face barriers to employment. As part of the co-design process for our new employment project, we brought HR specialists & family violence victim-survivors together to figure out how to make the employment process more accessible for victim-survivors. The insights from the co-design process have shaped the project in ways we could not have imagined.

22.01.2022 Sometimes respect means humbling ourselves so we can celebrate and learn from others - especially if we are a person who has more power because of societal structures like racism, patriarchy, transphobia, classism or ableism. WIRE is an organisation run by and for women, nonbinary and gender diverse people. We know that often women, nonbinary and gender diverse people who have less power don't get the respect they deserve for their knowledge and work. Women, nonbinary and gender diverse people from all walks of life have a lot of knowledge and expertise to share. #respectis #16dayscampaign

21.01.2022 Justice Connect's Dear Landlord tool can help you identify next steps if you are struggling to pay rent during COVID-19.

21.01.2022 It's #equalpayday2020. Every industry in Australia has a pay gap with full-time working men earning the most, even in industries dominated by women. But the gender gap is not the full picture. There is also a pay gap between white people and people of colour - especially First Nations women and migrant women. Closing the pay gap is about gender AND race.

20.01.2022 Our CEO Julie spoke to ABC about financial abuse. Financial abuse is a way to exercise power and control over another person. It is a form of family violence. Remember: - There are services out there to support you, including family violence services and financial counselling - If you are at risk of harm from family violence (including financial abuse) you are allowed to leave your home, even under stage 4 restrictions... - The big banks have trained teams that may be able to help WIRE can provide support, information & referral. Please note: we are experiencing more calls than usual and may take several days to get back to you. You can web chat (www.wire.org.au), email ([email protected]), or call (1300 134 130), Mon-Fri, 9-5pm.

19.01.2022 Love to all our bisexual or questioning staff and service users & all the bi+ folks out there. We know that your identity and attraction is real and valid, no matter who you're with now, or what your dating history looks like!

18.01.2022 Content warning: sexual violence This is very alarming. New laws make it illegal for victim-survivors to speak publicly about their abuse using their real names.... The Let Us Speak Victoria campaign is pushing for these laws to be wound back. Campaign leader Nina Funnell says: "While they were tinkering with that legislation they introduced a whole bunch of unintended side effects which are having real world consequences on people who have already told their stories or want to tell their stories."

17.01.2022 WIRE is sending our condolences to Bridget Flack's family, friends & community. We are so sorry for your loss. 15.01.2022 Some ideas for your weekend.

14.01.2022 It's Women's Health Week. Every day has a theme and today is bladder, gut and bowel health. Click through for information, quizzes and videos, including info on pelvic floor exercises & irritable bowel syndrome.

14.01.2022 Shout out to the single parents under stage 4 lockdown! We know many of you are trying to juggle housework, caring duties, paid work & support for children doing remote learning. What you are being asked to do is huge. We're thinking of you

14.01.2022 Have you checked out Money Power Freedom, with Cal Wilson and Santilla Chingaipe? Their latest episode explores money and mental health.

14.01.2022 Victorian women lost their jobs at more than 4 times the rate of men in July. Yet so far, the government has targeted stimulus at industries that are male-dominated (e.g. construction) and singled out a female-dominated industry (child care) as the first and only workforce to lose JobKeeper early. At this rate, women will fall even further behind and many will be pushed into poverty. WIRE supports the call to bring a gender lens to the budget.

14.01.2022 A reminder for all of us.

12.01.2022 Asking "R U OK?" is easy enough, but what do we do when someone says "no"? R U OK have released a conversation guide on what to say next.

12.01.2022 Staff and volunteers in small grassroots organisations and community groups carried more than their weight this year, supporting the communities hardest hit by COVID-19 but they don't always get the access to professional development that they deserve. We're raising funds to run professional development for community leaders free of charge. If you're looking to make a donation this end of year, consider supporting this campaign.

11.01.2022 Some tips by Democracy in Colour on how to respond to racism at Xmas dinner tomorrow!

11.01.2022 Lack of affordable and social housing, income inequality, the superannuation gap and family violence are making older women the fastest-growing group of homeless people. COVID-19 threatens to make that problem much worse, but COVID-19 has also shown us how quickly government can respond. When COVID hit, the Victorian government provided accommodation for thousands of people sleeping rough. As homelessness services and advocates have been saying: We have the power to change th...is. We can care for each other better & support people to live with dignity. We don't have to live with homelessness.

10.01.2022 It's the first day of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence. Working to end violence means using the power you have to say or do something (if it's safe) when people make sexist, racist, transphobic, ableist or other comments. It means 'calling in', to help people understand that their comments, attitudes are behaviours are not okay, and to create an environment where all people are respected. To mark the 16 days, we're running a 2 hour, online interactive training on how to have powerful one-one-one conversations about gender equality in your community (Dec 7). Registrations essential: www.eventbrite.com.au/e/lead-for-change-workshop-the-power- #respectis #callitout #16dayscampaign

10.01.2022 Do you work in the financial capability, banking, or community services/referral sector and wish you knew more about the NDIS? Trauma? Financial abuse? Or cultural identities? As part of the Women's Financial Capabilities Project we are developing a professional development training suite to better equip workers to support women's financial capability (in particular: First Nations women, migrant, refugee and asylum seeker women, and women with disabilities). The project has f...ound that workers have an unmet need for specialist knowledge and cultural competencies to improve outcomes for women. Can you take part in this 5 minute survey to help shape our training? The survey closes this Friday.

09.01.2022 WIRE, women's health orgs across the state, and our peak Gender Equity Victoria (GEN VIC) welcome the Victorian Government's 2020/2021 budget. This budget is a good start towards a gender equal recovery, but it's going to take more than one budget to regain the loss of women's economic security: There are promising signs that women are being prioritised at a State level, but the pandemic has exacerbated entrenched issues that will need devoted resources over several budgets...." - Tanja Kovac, CEO of Gender Equity Victoria Read the full budget at https://www.budget.vic.gov.au/

09.01.2022 It takes often takes money to be diagnosed and knowing how the system works to push against it and get support. How many children are not being tested and supported because they are not expected to do well in the education system (because of factors like class, or migrancy status)?

09.01.2022 Did you know that WIRE's separation and property clinic is still running remotely & providing legal advice on family court property matters by phone?

08.01.2022 It's sexual & reproductive health week, and a reminder that you have a right to access safe and appropriate health care, even during COVID-19. Sexual and reproductive health care is ESSENTIAL health care. You have a right to: - culturally appropriate spaces and interpreted information - health care that is open to questions and communication that helps you make the right choices for you... - accurate, evidence-based information - privacy - health care that respects your pronouns and your relationships WIRE and Victorian women's health organisations are coming together this week to share information on contraception, abortion, sexually transmissible infections testing, cervical screening, and sex during COVID-19. #ItsAllEssentialCare #SRHIsEssential

08.01.2022 Women on temporary visas are being forced to choose between poverty and homelessness, and returning to family violence and abuse. No one should have to make that choice, ever. We support the call to better protect migrant and refugee women at risk of violence.

06.01.2022 WIRE supports the #WorkingWomenNeed campaign which calls for more support for working women. Here's the facts: - Victorian women lost their jobs at more than 4 times the rate of men last month - Women are more likely to be working on the frontline as essential workers ... - Women are doing the lion's share of child care and housework. They are reducing work hours, taking leave & wondering how they're going to keep going like this. Something needs to change. You can sign the petition at: www.megaphone.org.au/petitions/working-women

06.01.2022 It's Women's Health Week & Birth Trauma Awareness Week too! This (originally posted 2 years ago), is Clementine Ford's own experience with birth trauma. Here's an excerpt: "The feminised nature of pregnancy and childbirth is what establishes it as some kind of "niche" concern in a sexist, patriarchal world. Women are expected to swallow our trauma because, as were repeatedly told, "the only thing that matters is a healthy child". Australian Birth Trauma Week is about reclaim...ing control over the horrendous, traumatising narratives that often rest uneasily alongside the powerful, transformative love we feel for our children. We are allowed to tell those stories. Our stories matter." PANDA (www.panda.org.au) is here to listen to anyone struggling with feelings caused by a difficult birth experience. You can call the National Helpline on 1300 726 306, Mon-Fri, 9am-7.30pm.

05.01.2022 Join experts, clinicians and people who access maternity care for this special panel discussion on birth trauma tomorrow.

04.01.2022 This looks pretty great - a recently released financial capability toolkit by and for young adults. The toolkit will help you navigate through big money moments & understand what a healthy relationship looks like, in terms of money. You can even take a quiz!

04.01.2022 On this Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples WIRE recognises the strength and resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the face of COVID-19. So far, Aboriginal-controlled health organisations have been very successful in their efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19. Aboriginal communities are outperforming the rest of Australia. We should all take note.

03.01.2022 "The fictitious FBI agent inspired a generation of young women to pursue careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), a phenomenon that even has its own name: the Scully Effect." Representation matters! And we still have a long way to go, particularly for First Nations people and people of colour, trans folks and people with disabilities.

02.01.2022 It's World Sexual Health Day. Here's a cute little series on pleasure during COVID-19 from our friends at Women's Health West.
