04.01.2022 MEETING OUR WORKING GROUP MEMBER: Hi, my name is Kamisa White and I am Yawuru and Bunaba Women. I am currently one of the working group members for the Broome S...uicide Prevention Trial (Wirriya Liyan), I am also a mother of 3 children and a coordinator for an early childhood program in Broome. Where did you grow up and who influenced you the most? Most of my life I grew up in Broome WA, I had also had great experiences early on in my childhood living in Woodonga VIC and also doing 3 years of high school in Perth WA. The people who influenced me the most was my grandmother, my father and my mother and all her sisters and brothers, these where all the people who raised me and shaped me into the person I am today, each one of them had different characteristic but they all in common shared open minds and hearts with everyone, they all worked hard to improve our lives and supported me through ups and downs in life, their commitment and love is what I strive to achieve for myself and my own children. Did you have any life changing experiences that put you on the path that led you to be doing what you’re doing today? At the age of 15 I was pregnant with my first child categorizing me as a teen parent, I managed to complete year 10 at 4 months pregnant whilst boarding away in Perth and then returned back home to Broome. I was labelled a teen parent, no one ever took me seriously and judged me way to fast and placed me as a statistic of getting nowhere and doing nothing because I was a young mum, but I refused to be this statistic. Whilst along my journey throughout my life I have also struggled with trying to educate my children in ways that society wanted me to do, dealing with racism, depression and anxiety and seeing first hand violence, self-harming and suicide attempts, because of these reasons I wanted to include myself in programs and work that have benefited the Indigenous community to overcome and prevent these thing from happening. If you was to provide one message to the world what would it be? I am and you are the generation of change it is my time and your time to create a difference to improve our future generations well-being and education, we deserve a chance to succeed in life, as Indigenous people it is our time to create new pathways and a society that allows us to thrive in the two worlds and only we can be accountable to achieve this.
