25.01.2022 Little miss Wriggles having some snooze time.
25.01.2022 And this morning!
24.01.2022 Miss wriggles is thriving well. She is nearly 2 kgs and loves to play after her feed for a while or better still just snuggle up for a long cuddle until she falls asleep. Here she is looking super cute fast asleep post play and cuddles.
23.01.2022 Had to say goodbye to our beautiful Miss Moffat today, we will really miss her, she is so gentle and cuddly! She has gone to buddy up with another lonely little girl of similar size, so she will have a friend to play with, lots of cuddles with her new carers and a wonderful outdoor play area to grow up in, with a lovely property to be soft released onto when she is ready to return to the wild. Perfect outcome for her.
23.01.2022 Evie update. Here is Evie with her new buddies, settled in really fast and loving her new home. Evie’s in the middle, Firefly (another Joey originally from the Refuge) is in front and Georgia, also originally from our area, on the right. Happy days ahead for them all, and a beautiful property to be released onto when ready to leave home. Many thanks to Sam for taking them and offering them a safe happy haven to grow up in.
22.01.2022 Miss Moffatt is responding well to her mange treatments, she has now settled down, is calm on handling her and feeding really well on milk and grass. You can see the areas now recovering from mange, with some fur loss but healthy skin showing. She is due another chlorhexidine in water solution, not alcohol mix, bath and scrub to clear her dermatitis skin condition plus residue bacteria on her skin, she will then be ready to leave our care and join her buddy that is waiting for her with a wildlife rescue carer.
22.01.2022 Minnies had her sutures removed today, all healed and looking good. Her weight has jumped to 1.4 kgs and she is starting to weight bear a little on her mended fractured femur. Huge thanks to Rob, vet surgeon that took her in and operated within a few hours of us taking her into care, and his follow up advice and support since. Amazing man!
18.01.2022 Hungry Henry our adopted fledgling magpie is keeping us busy with his antics. When we spend a few minutes in the garden, Henry’s always there, warbling, squawking to tell us he needs feeding, or throwing himself in the bird bath when topping up water, rolling on his back for his belly tickling. He waits at the door first thing in the morning, letting us know his breakfasts due, when he’s sated, he takes three meal worms crosswise in his beak and stands at the door to be let out. Obviously his elevensys snack! Here’s Henry this evening, post feeding, having a play, pecking Paul’s tee shirt, running and hiding, and enjoying his belly rubs!
16.01.2022 Update on Minnie, the little Joey that had major surgery last week to pin and repair her badly fractured upper leg ( femur). She has gained weight, from 970 grms to 1.5 kgs, and is feeding well. She is still not fully weight bearing but we are giving her light Physio at each feed time, and her leg is now relaxed and not pulled up under her, she is just starting to move her foot and putting her toes lightly on the floor. She is very nosey and likes to look around when awake from her pouch. We are very pleased with her progress, still a way to go until running about, but getting there.
16.01.2022 Meet Moe. He was released onto our property six years ago, and has many burrows on our and surrounding properties. He visits most evenings for his supplementary pellets, but recently he turned up with mange. Over the last six weeks we have been treating his mange, and due to his loss of weight we have been spoiling him with freshly hand picked grass that we pick daily for our wombats in care. Moe now thinks he is entitled to this little extra! He waits for my car to arrive when I have been out grass picking, and expects immediate grass. This video is Moe who arrived for his grass too early. He was offered his usual pellets but was not amused! He strolled into the barn, having a tantrum by tossing around a fitness ball, then decided he would help himself to the hay, if that’s all that was on offer! Lesson is......don’t spoil wild wombats!
14.01.2022 Good morning puddles and Tootsie.Puddles came into care some while after Tootsie, but needed a buddy, so we introduced them to each other and Puddles sticks like glue to Tootsie, who took him under her wing and who is the funniest, gentle wombat. Zoomies from Tootsie occur every night when we clean up, and belly rubs are a given every morning whilst Puddles looks on.
13.01.2022 Wombat Quiz.......which wombat do you think spent the day digging whilst the other slept! Both were silver in colour. Grace is the culprit, needless to say when they were brought inside for the night, she could hardly keep her eyes open long enough to take her bottle!
13.01.2022 Evie’s finally calming down when handled, her fears are subsiding, and she will soon be ready to join her new buddies. She is feeding really well, her special bath medication has cleared her bacterial skin infection, her fur is regrowing, just a week to really settle her before she can transfer. A very affectionate little girl now her fear is subsiding.
12.01.2022 Evie’s getting there! She’s now taking a full bottle three times a day, we are still treating her fungal skin condition, as you can see her nose is now a healthy pink, the fur will grow back. She’s feeling brighter, a few growls now when she’s picked up, all good signs, these will cease as she feels she’s safe and under no threat of danger, usually around 7 to 10 days. A Joey that doesn’t growl or fight on admission is a very sick Joey. Evie didn’t respond to being held or picked up until this morning. We have found a great carer that has two little girls already from us, and Evie will move to join her two new buddies once we have sorted out all her medical and emotional transitions. A good future for her now.
11.01.2022 Little Miss Moffat enjoying some grass whilst relaxing.
11.01.2022 Miss Moffatt is growing fast, her mange has gone and her fur is slowly returning. She is a very cuddly girl, and loves to suckle on her pacifier, especially when tired.
10.01.2022 Sad news. Over the past week Rosa deteriorated, and she began to have seizures. She lost her balance after a number of seizures and was showing symptoms of brain damage. We fought hard to control her fits, but they worsened daily and her ability to take fluids diminished. She was under vet observations throughout this time, but her seizures continued. We made the decision to euthanise Rosa, it was unbearable watching her struggle knowing her outcome was bleak. Post Mortem revealed she had a defect present from birth which was incompatible to life and it was just her time to leave us. So very sad for her. Rest In Peace now little girl.
10.01.2022 Fantastic variety of birds today, king partots, rosellas, white chested pigeons, brown cuckoo pigeons, and later galahs and doves!
09.01.2022 Little Emmie settling in with her two buddies at the refuge carers Joey compound, she loves to sleep near everything, grass, water and chaff. She is settling in really well with her new buddies, Minnie and Wattle. They will all return back to the main refuge at 8 kgs for the remaining year of their burrow experiences before release.
09.01.2022 Evie’s doing great now. Much calmer loves being cuddled! Evie’s moving from the refuge tomorrow to join her two new buddies, firefly and Georgia. She will be raised and released onto the carers property, a very lucky little girl. We will miss her.
08.01.2022 Bella’s first exploration of her new home. The marking on her back will wear off within a week but allows the custodians to spot her from any others.
06.01.2022 Went out on an emergency rescue today, just as the temperature gauge hit 37c. This beautiful 35 kg female, with a little male Joey in her pouch, around 1kg, was found by the home owner inside her house wandering around, creating carnage as she tried to get out. The lady opened the door and herded her onto her verandah, where she proceeded to crash into her pots before collapsing onto the floor. The heat was intense, she was stressed from her panic, and very overheated. Her Jo...Continue reading
06.01.2022 Just want to say a huge thank you to Reece Plumbing Supplies in Nowra, who donated eight trenching drains to the refuge today, when they found out we needed them to repair our joeys collapsed flooded burrows and make them safe to use again. It’s heartening to know there are retailer wildlife supporters with such kindness, so thanks to Martin, at Reece Plumbing Supplies in Nowra [email protected] https://www.reece.com.au/storefinder/nowra-2044
06.01.2022 Meet Minnie, a little 970 gram female Joey, orphaned and injured by the car impact that killed her mum. She was taken to a wildlife surgeon yesterday, in Sydney, for surgery on her fractured left femur, which needed intricate pinning to stabilise the fracture. On such a little wombat the pin is too big to fit inside her so the head is outside until she grows to envelop it or heals enough to remove it. She needs daily care to maintain her wound keeping infection out. She is not weight bearing on it at the moment, as it is still swollen and very sore. However, she is feeding well and is looking good.
06.01.2022 Meet our new girl, Rosa, 4.6 kgs a buddy for miss wriggles once Rosa has settled in and all her attack wounds have healed. Rosa had been alone for over a week struggling to survive with multiple wounds all over her back, head and a seriously infected wound on her shoulder which had rotting skin and pus oozing from under a heavy scab. Over the past four days she has had wound care three times a day and the scab has now lifted to display a healthy recovering skin. She is still very quiet and sleepy but hopefully will make a good recovery.
05.01.2022 https://m.facebook.com/events/3318136094931482/ If you like some virtual fun, want to support the wombats in Tassie and would love to win a great wombat medal this is worth looking into. Being a Virtual run, people can do the distance when and where they like, upload their time and receive a beautiful medal, sneak peak below. It needs to be done between the 1st November and the 31st December.
04.01.2022 Miss Moffat is recovering well now from her mange, her fur is now all clear and slowly growing back. Her weight has jumped up and she is a delight to have. Here she is relaxing after playing.
03.01.2022 Meet Emmie, a little lost Joey, weighing 3.78 kgs, found lying on the side of a country road by a local, and cared for overnight until he brought her into the refuge the following morning. Emmie had been hit by a car. She had concussion, her nostrils were filled with congealed blood, her left back leg was displaying symptoms of a possible break, not weight bearing, foot dropping, covered in tics. She was taken immediately to the vet, who ran tests and x rays. Her knee joint w...as severely bruised, but luckily not broken. Her face thought battered was not fractured, but her concussion was causing her to lilt her head to the left, and her leg movements when handled were not normal. Pain relief was given daily, which helps her cope plus anti inflammatory to reduce swelling. She fed well, and although not mobile was happy to chomp on some grasses.over the last few days she has slowly improved. Her bloody nostrils have, with soft washing, started to dissolve and her breathing improved. Her head tilt and strange leg movements have now returned to normal, and this morning, she started to mobilise slowly, a slight drag to her bad leg, but weight bearing again. She’s a really gentle, calm personality, has taken to her bottle feeds well, and life’s looking more positive for her now. See more
02.01.2022 16.1.21 Release day for big beautiful Bella. Bella arrived into care weighing 2.74 kgs. Her mother was hit by a car, she was inside the pouch. We were alerted to rescue her but on arriving, the Joey had been removed. We were very concerned, in the wrong inexperienced hands her outcome is not good. We launched an appeal to whoever removed her to call us. Two days passed, our concerns were growing for her. Then the call came. She had been taken home by a person who thought it ...would be a cute pet for her children. She tried to feed her but found the baby very difficult to feed, Bella was feisty and screeching. She couldn’t get her to feed, so resorted to a syringe, which was unpleasant for Bella, who continued to refuse milk, and became stressed and more vocal, all night. At this point she contacted us, and we collected her. From these attempts to feed her, and the stress it created, Bella was a nightmare at every feed, clamping her mouth and writhing and panicking. Apart from feed times she was affectionate not aggressive and a sweet little girl. After months we finally found a position she would take a bottle, but all her oral medication and wormers throughout her time with us was always difficult to give her. However, she was a beautiful wombat that eventually reached a great weight of 27 kgs! Yesterday, we finally took her to a wonderful farm, of 1000 acres, with perfect terrain for wombats. The wombat population on this farm had diminished due to eradication by the previous owner, and mange. The new owners are regenerating the land, no pesticides, natives planted, and mange being treated, a huge job on such a large property. Two volunteers, ecologists from Argentina that are assisting the property owners have been amazing, finding a great selection of suitable burrows, monitoring any activity with cameras, and setting up a beautiful water station for Bella to use whilst she settles into her new burrow. There is a creek lower down for her to access, that has a wombat colony along its banks, but for now her safety is important, away from the crowds, until she explores and integrates at her own pace. They will continue to monitor her burrow activity via camera for a few weeks to ensure she has accepted it and is safe. Due to her good size she was very confident, checking out the burrow, a little digging, then a walk around the outside, checking the water station, the grass, looking behind and either side of the burrow before deciding enough! She disappeared inside for her day time sleep. A great release. So rewarding to see her back where she belongs. Safe life Bella. Many thanks to JJ, and Richard for welcoming Bella onto their farm, and Luchi and Martin for all their help. See more
01.01.2022 This is Mossy, he has returned to us for some tactile therapy, he became very agitated and scared, when he met his new carers, so he has returned for a little r&r and is doing well. His feeding has improved, his weight has jumped up and we are slowly introducing him to miss Moffatt as this will also calm him once they become friends. They still boof and have a spat, but are sleeping side by side and even occasionally Mossy has climbed into miss Moffatt’s bed! Small steps, that take much patience and time, but Mossy has calmed down over the past 10 days, not quite ready to go back to his forever carers yet, but he’s getting there.
