Dear Premier, Anxiety is rising as the term nudges to an end point. Again, we raise our concerns about our interstate boarders, those who may cross the border to home this holiday but the Public Health proviso under which they are permitted to return to school for Term 4 will be 14 days solitary confinement. These are students, some younger than twelve-years-old who have the capacity to self-isolate on their properties, or in their country towns for the two weeks of holidays. Holidays look different for these students and their families. With a real harvest opportunity for the first time in almost a decade, many are essential agricultural workers. But, more importantly, they are all in need of time with their families. Many of us can’t travel to our family within Australia and beyond, a given when looking at the incidence of COVID-19. Yet, if we were to remove state lines, what becomes apparent is that these students are returning home to areas that are COVID-free, places that are statistically far safer than the crowded populations of Brisbane and coastal areas. We want our boarders to go home for the holidays because we understand the needs they and their families have their combined mental health rests upon it in many cases. We want them to return without the prospect of solitary confinement. Of all the quarantining that has occurred across Australia, we are aware of families who have quarantined together, adults who have quarantined solo, but we are unaware of teenagers who have been required to room alone for two weeks without human contact of any kind. We know that the shifting landscape of COVID-19 requires three hundred and sixty degree turns, sometimes daily schools have been doing so for most of the year. What we also seek is an understanding of the reality of a return to a property where isolation is a way of life: hence the organisation - the Isolated Children’s and Parents’ Association (ICPA) which advocates so vociferously for those who live remotely families, living together but alone. We too support health and wellbeing and are conscious of the mental health strain across our whole country. There is some irony that new funding for mental health has been allocated in Queensland simultaneous with a decision to place returning NSW boarders in fourteen days‘ solitary confinement upon their return to Term 4. Families need one another now if they can so many of us know intimately that we can’t. Yet, it is such a shame that where it is possible; where it is low risk, that a line in the dirt means a one-way journey. Once the border has been crossed, a return to education in Queensland sees it dangling on the end of two weeks of solitary confinement. We don’t know any young people who are robust enough for that.
