24.01.2022 ELLA'S STORY // We received an email from Sunshine Coast mum Ruth whose daughter landed in emergency over the Christmas break after a trampoline accident. With her permission, we'd like to share this email with you and to thank everyone who gave gifts to our youngest patients at the end of 2020. "On Christmas day whilst celebrating at our friend’s place, my daughter had a trampoline accident. Unable to move, we needed to call paramedics to transport her to the emergency dep...t at SCUH. "Her pain was so extreme that she couldn’t move and wouldn’t allow anyone to touch anything on the right side of her body. After an emergency MRI performed at 1am (which is apparently unheard of), it proved no bones were broken and no permanent damage. Spending Christmas night in the hospital with my 11 year old was a quick sobering up to what could have been a tragic accident, and seeing your daughter in that much pain that she was uncontrollably shaking and throwing up was really upsetting. After finally being administered enough pain relief to settle her, the moment that brought relief to Ella was when she was presented with a beautifully wrapped Christmas Present from Wishlist. She was unable to move or tilt her head to look at the present, so it wasn’t until the early hours of the morning when I could open this for her, and it was a lovely jewellery box craft set, that was so age appropriate and funky she loved it. During this last week she hasn’t been able to get off the bed/couch, so she has been grateful that she had a craft that she could work on whilst lying down. Such a thoughtful gift that was unexpected and so appreciated which is the reason for my email. Thank you Lisa and the team at Wishlist, the little things mean so much." Fortunately, Ella is now walking unassisted while continuing to receive treatment and there is no permanent damage. 19.01.2022 FUNDED // We are so excited to see the Birth Centre refurbishment project starting to come to life thanks to your donations. The vision of the Birth Centre’s refurbishment project is to provide a "home like" environment within a hospital setting that creates a calming, comfortable and peaceful atmosphere for women and their families to welcome their babies into the world. The scenic images by Brett McIntosh have been installed in two of the rooms and aim to soften the space..., making them more inviting and less clinical to help support the physiological process of birth. The Birth Centre rooms are currently available for women who are receiving maternity care through the Midwifery Group Practice and mainstream midwifery care at SCUH or Private Practice Midwifery Care who meet the Birth Centre Criteria. 18.01.2022 MEET HOOTIE // There's a lot of clownin' around at this place, especially when it comes to the volunteer Coastal Caring Clowns. Here's a Q&A with 'Hootie' who has been a caring clown within our hospitals for six years. Q: Hootie, how did you get your name?... A: They say that Owls are Wise, but I also see them as fun cuddly birds with big eyes, hearts of gold, lots of love, and always having a hoot. So I became Hootie the Owl in honour of these gorgeous birds who make me smile. Q: Tell us about a memorable patient? A: I love all the jokes we hear, the intrigue reactions to our magic, the interesting chats with inspiring patients and their families, being in awe of the amazing SCUH staff, and the smiles bestowed upon us constantly. I also really enjoyed a talented teenage boy who serenaded us with his magical guitar last month whilst in the hospital bed his music touched my soul and I look forward to seeing him on Australia’s Got Talent one day. Q: Tell us something about you that others may not know? A: My grandfather was Mr Magic on TV many, many years ago. 16.01.2022 ANNOUNCEMENT // High risk and vulnerable children will benefit from a landmark $10,000 grant to Wishlist from The Heritage Bank Charitable Foundation. Wishlist announced the grant this morning to help provide ‘Kits for Kids’ for children of all ages who enter out-of-home-care. The ‘kits’ are essentially backpacks filled with new clothes like pyjamas, underwear and casual clothes, plus a soft toy, books, baby care items if needed and basic grooming necessities. This year a...lone, almost 100 vulnerable children have been given these backpacks from Child Protection Liaison Unit (CPLU) officers which operate out of the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service (SCHHS). Wishlist CEO Lisa Rowe said the unit had facilitated the care of around 430 children and adolescents over the past year. This simple gesture of a bag with resources and special items for a child can offer comfort in the most distressing and traumatic time in their life, Ms Rowe said. Children who enter out-of-home care often have no personal items of their own and are in crisis situations. The CPLU officers are now able to provide resources on health, developmental and trauma to support and educate parents and carers on key issues and services, thanks to the funding of these Kits for Kids. 11.01.2022 FUNDED // The SCUH mortuary recently underwent a refurbishment to soften the look of the public area in response to feedback from the community. Patient Safety Officer Lauren said the viewing area was a multi-use space which grieving families may attend to view their loved one, while also functioning as a coronial mortuary. "The patient safety team were successful in gaining funding from Wishlist and handed the reigns to consumers to make design choices they thought best su...ited the space," she said. "While the scope of the project was limited to minor aesthetic changes, the consumers enjoyed consulting on the project and we are elated with the outcome and beautiful artwork they have chosen. "The patient safety team would like to acknowledge the collaborative efforts of the mortuary staff, Pathology Queensland and the Emergency Department social workers, as well as a hearty thank you to Wishlist for their support. 09.01.2022 FUNDED // The Paediatric Allied Health team at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital are pretty proud of their new tumble form chairs. Wishlist was able to fund this equipment to the tune of $2,350 to facilitate optimal positioning for children with possible physical, cognitive or feeding issues. The chairs help children with various medical needs including birth prematurity, seizure disorders, cerebral palsy, low postural control and physical disabilities.... The Allied Health team applied to Wishlist to fund these items to improve health, reduce the length of time in hospital, and allow young patients to engage in important childhood activities like meal times, play and socialisation. 09.01.2022 VOLUNTEER PROFILE // A self-confessed foodie, Ian helps out at Wishlist Coffee House in Gympie and loves learning from our Coffee House manager Jacques who is a French pastry chef. The former principal has been volunteering since mid-2018 and says he often sees former students and parents drop into the Coffee House for a tasty treat. Q: Ian, why did you decide to volunteer? ... A: Actually it was my wife who thought I needed something to keep me occupied for a day a week. Q: When did you move to Gympie? A: About 20 years ago. I am a former principal and taught all over the state. Q: Why do you like volunteering at Wishlist Coffee House? A: It's good mixing with other volunteers, and I'm a bit of a foodie so I like being around the kitchen. I do all the cooking at home. I also like that the money (raised) stays here in Gympie and we can see where it is being spent. Q: Have you picked up any good tips from Jacques? A: Yes. I've learned a lot about food hygiene and preparation, and some cooking skills from Jacques.
