25.01.2022 PLANNED BURN NOTICE The Witchcliffe Volunteer Fire Brigade on behalf of the Shire of Augusta Margaret River will be conducting a planned burn in Witchcliffe this Thursday 29th October from 8.30am. 25.01.2022 Thank you to our team and to all their family who allow them to do what they do.
25.01.2022 This is a great personal story of how quick a fire can impact your property. It is six years today since Witchcliffe attended the Forest Grove Road Fire which burnt 6 hectares and put at least one home under threat. Make sure you have a plan. Go to www.mybushfireplan.wa.gov.au
23.01.2022 We move into the prohibited burning period from midnight tonight. No fires are to be lit in the open air. That means any fire you see should be called in to 000.
23.01.2022 We have just completed a very successful planned burn for the Margaret River Independent School. This burn is part of a broader mosaic of burning within their bush land. We started last night by doing some edge burning on the side closest to the school and burning out some piles of prunings. We then went back today to complete the burn which was in an area of bush near to the school buildings. The burn was undertaken in a slow and controlled manner to keep the flame height... low and is what we describe as a cool burn. This type of burning reduces the ground fuel load but retains the integrity of the canopy. We saw many little critters having the time to move away from the fire and into areas not being burnt. This has now reduced the fuel load in that area and provides a safe buffer for the school from any potential fire that may impact from that direction in the summer months. See more
22.01.2022 Please be advised that our Shire will be under a DFES declared Total Fire Ban for tomorrow the 7th January. See details below.
21.01.2022 Ok you are free to burn at last, but please remember your fire, your responsibility. Don’t be that person!
20.01.2022 The Western Australian DFES Bushfire Centre of Excellence Karla Katitjin officially opened its doors today! This Centre will be a nation-leading hub harnessing ...the best from academia, science and traditional fire mitigation. The Centre will facilitate a greater understanding of bushfires than we’ve ever had before, not just for emergency services but for the benefit of all Western Australians. The community also plays an important part in bushfire management, and will have access to an interpretive learning centre to help further improve how we work together. The unique design of the curved walls and high raked ceilings honour our State’s Indigenous heritage the curved rammed earth walls resemble a river mouth, the roof a traditional humpy structure and the entire building is the shape of a boomerang. The building’s Nyungar name Karla Katitjin means ‘fire knowledge’. It’s a fitting location for our Traditional Fire Program, which will help us learn more about how First Nations People managed the landscape through fire. This will help guide our contemporary fire management practices in the future. The local Bindjareb Nyungar Boodja community have been closely involved throughout the design and construction process. The Bushfire Centre of Excellence (BCoE) team has been operational since mid-2019, delivering over 30 training courses ranging from Bushfire Safety Awareness and Firefighting Skills, to Planned Burning and Advanced Bushfire Management.
20.01.2022 Important notice, the start time for the restricted burning period has been brought forward to this Friday 6th November due to dryer conditions than usual for this time of year. There are some warm and windy days expected at the end of this week. This means if you wish to to undertake some planned burning you will need a permit from your local Fire Control Officer. Give them a call, they are friendly people and permits are free!
20.01.2022 Another Total Fire Ban for tomorrow. Saturday 9th January.
20.01.2022 These are some of the conditions fire fighters are facing overnight at the fire north of Perth near Lancelin. We have been fortunate down here so far but the weather is warming up as the week progresses. Don’t be complacent. A fire can start anywhere and anytime and escalate quickly. Make sure you have your fire plan in place. Know ahead of time what you are going to do to prevent making hurried and poor decisions. www.mybushfireplan.wa.gov.au
19.01.2022 Massive boost to the aerial fleet in WA and a bonus to have it parked in Busselton. Welcome to the South West, it’s a pleasure to host you all. Coulson Aviation - Next Gen Firefighting
19.01.2022 Even in the midst of a global pandemic our Emergency Services will go above and beyond to help others in a time of need, in this case preparing to go to California. Not required this time but ready for next time. So proud of Matt Holland who began his career as a volunteer with our brigade.

17.01.2022 How fireproof is your plan? After Australia's Black Summer, we're all too familiar with the devastation that bushfires bring. Summer is already here, and we all... need to be prepared. Protect what matters most by having a bushfire plan for you and your family. Create one at www.mybushfireplan.wa.gov.au or by downloading the app 'My Bushfire Plan'.

17.01.2022 The Shire has just issued a Section 46 notice under the Bush Fires Act (1954) effective immediately: Prohibits the lighting of any fire in the open air Prohibits the introduction of any fuel into any existing fire in the open air Requires where possible the extinguishment of any existing fire in the open air... Requires the securing of the boundaries and effective monitoring of any existing fires for the period of the section 46 notice This notice will take effect immediately from 13:00 (1pm) through to 20:00 (8pm) Monday 25 May. This is due to the severe fire weather forecast for this weekend as the frontal system and tropical cyclone merge and head towards the coast. Strong NNW winds are expected ahead of any rain.
16.01.2022 Thumbs up to DFES and the Bushfire Centre of Excellence for exploring ways of combining cultural practices into today’s contemporary settings.

11.01.2022 Fuel Reduction Burning happening in Margaret River from 11am tomorrow.
11.01.2022 Another planned burn was completed by the brigade yesterday while the window for burning was still open to us. This time in the Mammoth Street Reserve bordering the Witchcliffe townsite. This burn to was to provide protection to the to the townsite in the high risk summer period. A lot of strategic planning was done by the Shire Community Emergency Services Manager to enable the brigade to undertake this burn on behalf of the Shire. Parameters were set pertaining to the weath...er including temperature, wind direction and strength. The soil moisture content and fuel moisture content was measured. Calculations were then made to define the limits in flame height and flame rate of spread to maintain a cool burn. On the day of a burn the temperature changes throughout the day as does the wind direction and strength at varying times and the crews are constantly observing and adjusting to maintain control and achieve a successful outcome. 06.01.2022 St Florian is the Patron Saint of Firefighters. The International Fire Fighter Day is celebrated on the 4th May each year and coincides with St Florian’s Day. It is a day to honour those who have lost their life in the line of duty. We sadly cannot meet for a memorial service this year so I am posting this Memorial we discovered in Salzburg to help remember the fallen.

06.01.2022 Many thanks to our community for their recent donations which enabled the purchase of a new genset which was installed at the station just a couple of weeks ago. It had its first real workout today and it enabled us to power up the station to keep all our batteries charged and all appliances ready to respond. It will also run our fast fill pump system when required.
