18.01.2022 Calls for tougher partner visa rules The rules for issuing "partner visas" in Australia should be reformed because they are so weak that migrants unable to gain residency in other visa categories are rushing to them as an attractive alternative, says a leading demographer. Bob Birrell, in a new report, claims gaming of the system by bogus couples using partner visas to obtain permanent residency could be prevented if the federal government introduced tougher regulations ...such as those applying in the US, Britain, Canada, Denmark and The Netherlands. Branding Australias partner visa rules the weakest in the Western world, Dr Birrell highlights a jump in the annual partner visa program from 41,994 to 47,825 between 2011 and 2015. He says 49,825 remained the firm target until 2017, and the number could have been much higher considering a backlog of 79,027 applications. http://online.isentialink.com//2a782ab6-87fb-4af8-a869-a4d
