25.01.2022 HSUWA Secretary Naomi McCrae says there are signs our aged care sector is in crisis. "Ive had workers tell me their workloads are so high they are only able to meet the basic, life-essential needs of their clients...theyre not actually able to provide care," she said. According to new economic modelling commissioned by the Health Services Union, raising the Medicare Levy from 2 per cent to 2.65 per cent could repair the system and allow the sector to hire 59,000 extra aged... workers. What do you think of this proposal?

25.01.2022 Members in Western Diagnostic Pathology celebrated an important step recently, with their employer sending out a notice to begin the formal bargaining process for a union agreement. Members worked hard to get to this point, building power, running group meetings, surveying important issues, voting on a log of claims and putting union stickers on to demonstrate their commitment to winning a fair deal. Congratulations to all of the members on their efforts!

Superannuation on unpaid parental leave (up to 12 weeks) A review process for casual employees, or those on fixed term contracts, after two years employment Better rights when it comes to securing different work arrangements A two-year term from 1 July 2020 and no loss of entitlements or conditions All public sector members will receive further details of the offer and an email ballot this week. 24.01.2022 Last night, the upper house passed the McGowan Government industrial manslaughter laws the day after unions rallied outside Parliament House demanding justice for Jonnie the 23-year-old apprentice who tragically fell to his death when a glass roof collapsed at a Curtin University construction site last week. Congratulations to Unions WA and Families Left Behind, who have fought tirelessly for these legislative changes. The Safety Levy Bill will return to the Legislative Assembly alongside the Work Health and Safety Bill in November to be finalised. https://thewest.com.au//legislative-council-pass-mcgowan-g

23.01.2022 Aged care workers under an award will be entitled to two weeks paid leave if they are required to self-isolate due to COVID-19. We congratulate the Fair Work Commission for protecting these workers after a claim was brought by the HSU and other unions. We now call on employers to grant paid pandemic leave for all aged care workers, whether they are covered by a Modern Award or by an Enterprise Agreement.

23.01.2022 We wish a fond farewell to Union Assistant Secretary Chris Panizza Private Sector Lead Organiser Gilbert Reid, Treasurer and HSS stalwart Dave Shaw, and Committee Member and former SCGH OT Cassie Reading. Here's some photos from their send off on Wednesday The Royal Perth

17.01.2022 Today is Thank You for Working in Aged Care Day! Aged care staff have done incredible work in the toughest of conditions throughout 2020. We at HSUWA thank them for all of the work they do within the WA community. Visit changeagedcare.org for more information about the day.

17.01.2022 At our recent AGM, we warmly welcomed the announcement of the re-election of our President Cheryl Hamill, Committee Member Drazen Nikolic, and Committee of Management Members Ric Skipworth and Michael Berry. Thank you to our outgoing Committee Members John Shehade and Chris Goodsell for their time and faithful dedication to the union over many years.

16.01.2022 Workers have carried Australia through the pandemic. We need politicians to realise that workers are the hidden heroes of this crisis, and that we will not accept cuts to wages or working conditions. The Federal Government is considering changes to industrial relations laws and big business wants to exploit the crisis.... When the big business lobby talks about "flexibility" and "reform", it is code for cutting wages and removing your rights at work. To help build support for our position the ACTU has launched a new campaign For the Workers. You can see the new campaign website here:

16.01.2022 Throwback Thursday! Check out this member win from last year. "A member approached the union this week with concerns about factually incorrect paperwork they were being asked to sign by their employer."

15.01.2022 The 124 recommendations from the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety confirm the aged care system requires comprehensive reform to deliver the high-quality care that older Australians deserve. Your union is working on a submission to the Commission before the 12 November deadline to better protect the aged care workforce. 15.01.2022 According to the Federal Department of Health, PPE is not released from the national stockpile to aged care homes until they record an outbreak of coronavirus. Before then, it is up to the provider to source and purchase PPE for staff. Is this sufficient protection for our WA aged care workers?

14.01.2022 The HSUWA is is thinking of our fellow healthcare workers in Victoria who are responding to the rapid spread of COVID. Unfortunately, and as predicted by the union movement, we see that workers in precarious jobs without a safety net are a growing source of transmission in Melbourne. Another reason why Paid Pandemic Leave should be available to everyone.

13.01.2022 Excellent analysis showing women are paid less then men in every occupation. Previous research has not being able to fully explain why, pointing to the missing factor of society wide sexism.

13.01.2022 Minister for Mental Health Roger Cook has announced an analysis of the Children and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS). Commencing in January, the analysis will be overseen by a respected independent expert and will proactively engage CAMHS staff. The crisis at CAMHS has been building for years with members under unrelenting pressure from the growth in referrals. HSU members will fiercely advocate for the necessary investment in, and support of, the CAMHS workforce in 2021.

12.01.2022 The WA Government today launched new weekly testing regime for frontline workers. It has been 150 days since the last case of community transmission, but those in the health sector, patrolling our borders or enforcing restrictions remain at greater risk of infection. HSUWA supports this move and will continue to advocate for expanded asymptomatic testing to help detect the spread of COVID-19 in WA.

06.01.2022 The HSUWA has joined the ACTU’s call to keep the JobSeeker payment with the full coronavirus supplement after the Morrison Government announced that it would begin dropping next year. Before the pandemic, the equivalent to the JobSeeker payment (NewStart) was just $40.42 a day. Following union pressure, the coronavirus supplement was added taking it to $58.26, but the government is reducing this to $51.20 in January, before removing the supplement entirely at the end of Mar...ch. As ACTU President Michele O’Neil has said: Rather than supporting working people through the worst economic downturn in a century, the government has reverted to ideological attacks on the unemployed. #RaiseTheRateForGood
