09.01.2022 Happy Botanic Gardens Day! It’s a time to celebrate these magical spaces where nature, wonder and conservation come together. As we focus on the #PowerOfPlants, Emma Lewellyn, our Horticultural Therapist, shares her thoughts on a tasty endemic plant as part of the #plantchallenge : Muntries! I love these tasty little coastal jewels.... Known as Mantirri in the local #Kaurna language, they look and taste like tiny little apples with spicy myrtle/ eucalyptus notes. Scientifically referred to as Kunzea pomifera, the plant is indigenous to South Australia and Western Victoria. It’s a prostrate, woody shrub and its natural distribution makes it best suited to free draining and sandy soil - though I’ve grown it on heavy Adelaide plains clay with reasonable success. It has beautiful little fuzzy white flowers reminiscent of other genera in the Myrtaceae family. Thanks for sharing, Emma! Tell us what your favourite plants are and why, using the hashtag #plantchallenge #BotanicGardensDay #NationalReconciliationWeek #NRW2021 #mantirri #muntries #morethanaword

08.01.2022 Did you knowthat having a diverse range of bacteria in your soil can have a hugely positive impact on your plants? These teensy bugs can perform all sorts of wonders, from unlocking nutrients in the soil to fighting off plant invaders (bye-bye nematodes!). So we’re excited to announce our partnership with Neutrog who delve into the natural science of microbiology in soil and its impact on plant health. Together, we will focus on research and development, using their products on plants in Adelaide, Wittunga and Mount Lofty Botanic Gardens and monitoring the results to see how best to keep gardens thriving using their sustainable, local, organic materials.

Upload a photograph of yourself in the yoga "tree pose using the hashtag #treeposefortheplanet, and for every photo, a tree will be planted here in South Australia through the Trees For Life (SA) Habitat Initiative! How amazing is that? There are heaps of trees at a botanic garden near you to provide inspiration for this conservation-focused Nature Festival activity, but you can take your photo anytime and anywhere.... Here is a photo of Botanic Gardens and State Herbarium Director, Dr. Lucy Sutherland, and Horticultural Supervisor, Cliff Sawtell, getting in on the action! Have some fun and get snapping, because we all need trees https://www.naturefestival.org.au//tree-pose-for-the-plane Tree Pose For The Planet

07.01.2022 Meet our feathery friend, Phylica pubescens! Hailing from the fynbos in South Africa, this evergreen shrub is part of the Rhamnacae family and its tiny flowers release a very mild cinnamon scent. This breathtaking photo from garden visitor @boyleerica (IG), has perfectly captured the soft hairs that cover its narrow green-grey leaves.

07.01.2022 Inject a little (or a lot!) of colour into your life with a meander through Wittunga Botanic Garden this spring! The Woolly Bottlebrush (Greyia radlkoferi), native to South Africa, features these incredible dense, upright clusters of bright scarlet flowers and is just a taste of what you'll see on your visit.

07.01.2022 It's National NAIDOC week, a time to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Australian Aboriginal people have an intricate understanding of the Australian environment, and a rich knowledge of plants developed over many thousands of years. Plants have been used for food, hunting, medicine, tools, ceremonies and in most other aspects of traditional life. ... In many places in the Adelaide foothills, you can find ancient hollows in trees, like this one in our sister garden, Adelaide Botanic Garden. The species is River Red Gum or Eucalyptus camaldulensis. Burnt trunks like this were used as a basis for a shelter, made cosy and snug by blocking off openings exposed to the weather, and lining the floor with bark and animal fur rugs. A veranda, made of leaves, bark and branches extended the size of the shelter. The tree shelters were traditionally used in winter as family groups moved inland to escape the cold winds and flooded wetlands near the coast. Do you have a hollow river red gum near your place? They are such magnificent trees! #NAIDOC2020 #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe
