13.01.2022 * FAMILY COURT MERGER UPDATE * The Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Legislation Committee handed down their report on the family courts merger bills. The Government members support the passing of the Bills. Labor and The Greens provided dissenting reports, opposing the Bills. The AG responded in a media release that the Government would now seek to progress the Bills as a priority during the next sitting fortnight, which commences on 30 November and is the last sitt...ing for 2020. We continue to advocate that these Bills NOT proceed. Inquiry after inquiry has recommended the strengthening of specialisation in family law and family violence. TO ENSURE THE PROTECTION OF CHILDREN AND ADULT SURVIVORS OF FAMILY VIOLENCE WE MUST RETAIN A STAND-ALONE, SPECIALIST, FAMILY COURT. Women's Legal Services Australia and Community Legal Centres Australia encourage you to take urgent action. Contact your local MPs and Senators to speak out against the Bills. Here is the open letter to the AG: http://www.wlsa.org.au//Letter_to_AG_re_concerns_about_fam You can read the joint media release: http://www.wlsa.org.au//dire_federal_circuit_court_backlog

04.01.2022 We made a submission in response to the Disability Royal Commission Issues Paper about the experience of First Nations People with Disability in Australia. In this submission we acknowledge First Nations peoples’ experiences of structural violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation perpetrated by State actors through harmful and racist Government policies and practices since invasion. This, in combination with further harmful Government action, inaction or insufficient action, ...has resulted in impairment for many First Nations peoples. The trauma often manifests as a severe psycho-social disability which impacts on every aspect of a person’s life and on their family’s life, including across generations. We argue Governments must be held accountable and also responsible for reparations. You can read the submission here: https://www.wlsnsw.org.au//WLS-NSW-DRC-First-Nations-Issue Thanks to our amazing team for their valuable contribution in engaging in discussions with the Disability Royal Commission First Nations team on this important issue.
