22.01.2022 Held annually on May 28, LGBTQ Domestic Violence Awareness Day is the only day like it in the world. It aims to help end violence and abuse within LGBTQ+ communities, by increasing visibility through the annual awareness day campaign. While the campaign started in Australia the day is being recognised in many other countries in 2021 including the United Kingdom, USA, Canada, Ireland, Denmark, Sweden and The Netherlands. The theme for the 2021 event is #SeenAndBelieved. Work...places, educational institutions and the community, are encouraged to start a conversation about what they can do to ensure all people, including our LGBTQ+ communities, are supported if they experience domestic or family violence. People are also encouraged to learn more about the unique methods of power and control that may be experienced in LGBTQ+ relationships and how to reduce any barriers to reporting. With your support, and the support of our community we can ensure that there are no invisible victims in the future and that everyone, no matter what their sexuality or gender identity is, can feel #SeenAndBelieved and be given hope. 17.01.2022 Good Evening everyone, we have had people asking us what happened to Warm Up and Serve this year. I am here to tell you that it is with a heavy heart we had to forgo due to COVID 19 it takes months of work by our staff because we were as unsure as everyone else we decided to do something a little different but still in theme. We would like to launch our Warm Up and Serve Cookbook 2020 to you all first before anyone else :) and guess what else we now have our revamped website ...and it is up and running for you to purchase this fabulous book. This book is not your average cookbook every recipe is from the heart and soul, those who contributed wrote about what this meal means to them... passed down through generations, a time when you were a kid licking the bowl when mum tells you NO...... With Christmas just around the corner it is a great present whilst also supporting a service like Women's Legal to continue working with women and children to access legal services. You can come in and say hello at our office to purchase the Warm Up and Serve cookbook for $39.95 or head over to our new website www.wlssa.org.au THANK YOU for your continued support keep an eye out on our page for some new content from Women's Legal Service. 15.01.2022 Today is International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and the start of the 16 days of activism to end gendered based violence. Horrifically, ...the disturbing statistics persist with more than one woman per week dying in Australia as a result of domestic violence and there being 45 alleged domestic homicides so far this year. It is alarming that figures are emerging about a rise in women seeking support from 1800 RESPECT during the initial lockdown and about the prevalence of violence. We need real concerted action and resources to combat this alarming rise in violence and its consequences. We need an urgent injection of funds into prevention services and supports, including at the local community level, including right here in the south. We need more resources into the remarkable DV services in our community so that they can expeditiously provide help to those experiencing violence. And we need to eradicate the gender inequality that lies as the root cause of violence and sexual harassment. Today, and every day, let’s commit to doing whatever we can to prevent and end violence, to have zero tolerance towards sexual harassment. Together we can ensure there is #notonemore. 03.01.2022 National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. The dates for NRW remain the same each year; 27 May to 3 June. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision respectively.
