25.01.2022 A year ago today... I’m not the best with words & this is something pretty hard to explain unless you were there but I’ll try my best. A year ago today fires ripped through the little village we call home. Fire is perhaps one of the most beautiful of mother nature’s events but also the most fierce & unpredictable- a drought you know is coming after many months of no rain, no flood you know which rivers/creeks swell after heavy downpours but fire can start anywhere and engulf... so much so quickly & within a split second & change of wind can change direction & nothing in its path is safe. Ritchie was out doing deliveries & ended up getting blocked on his way home due to fires further south. I could see smoke building thicker & thicker, being at home with 3 little girls I decided I was safer with dad & mum at the farm. Helicopters quickly become a normal noise as they constantly hovered above, smoke too thick that we couldn’t go outside or have windows open. Then nighttime fell, this was possibly the eeriest time of all sitting in the lounge room looking out the big windows was similar to sitting in a high rise building in the city surrounded by city lights expect it wasn’t city lights but the orange glow of fire as far as the eye could see. Hours passed we lost power, we lost reception constantly aware of the wind & direction it was blowing. The sun rose & a quick drive to source some more fuel to keep the generator going revealed the destruction of the night before.... so much black, so much smoke, so much devastation. We were so very lucky to only lose some boundary fencing, others not so lucky. But one of the beautiful things about this country is spirit that shines through in times like this, the help & support of our fellow mates made all the difference.
