25.01.2022 Next week is Children's Week an annual event celebrated around Universal Children’s Day, designated in Australia as the fourth Wednesday in October. Children’s Week celebrates the right of children to enjoy childhood. It is also a time for children to demonstrate their talents, skills and abilities. A diverse range of events and activities are organised at National, State and Local levels. These focus the attention of the wider community on children, their needs and achievem...ents. In 2020 the National Focus is Children have the right to meet with other children and young people and to join groups and organisations as long as this does not stop other people from enjoying their rights. Having our yard renovations occurring at the moment is providing the children with a great opportunity to engage in some mixed age group play outside in the various spaces and going on walks in our community. That sense of being, belonging and becoming is seen through those moments and appear to be enjoyed by all. (United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Adopted and opened for signature, ratification and accession by General Assembly resolution 44/25 of 20 November 1989 entry into force 2 September 1990, in accordance with article 49) At Woden Valley CCC we see children as competent, capable and connected. We are a central place for children, families, educators and community to learn and grow collaboratively and to be active in advocating for children’s voices to be heard. What we teach now is what will be seen in the future. During Children’s Week, we encourage everyone to be involved in a Giving Project to build an understanding that strong communities are ones that can rely on each other to be there when we are unable to do it ourselves. This year we are supporting The Little Pantry which is an initiative of Woden Community Services that support the communities families in need of food and basic supplies when times are tough. Please have a look at the posters around the centre to see what your child’s room is collecting and if you can please bring in a donation. Children’s Week at WVCCC is also about the joy that it is to have a childhood. Being curious and asking those big questions, feeling dirt and sand between your toes, wondering what that thing is or what it will do and then experimenting to find out, or simply just enjoy a sense of being in a safe and supported place. Next week slow down where you can and enjoy those moments that you share together. Read and comment on our Daily Reflections, or maybe send through some pictures of how your family connects with each other and community. - Tracey-Lee Elliss [WVCCC Pedagogical Lader]

07.01.2022 "Dhawra nguna dhawra Ngoonawal - This land is Ngoonawal land" This week is NAIDOC Week. NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines* and Islanders Day Observance Committee, and it’s history dates back to the 1920s. NAIDOC is traditionally celebrated in July and was moved to November this year because of Covid19 restrictions earlier in the year.... NAIDOC Week is a time to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities but by Australians from all walks of life. The theme of NAIDOC week this year is Always Was, Always Will Be. Always Was, Always Will Be. recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. At WVCCC we embrace the concept that Australia always was and always will be Aboriginal land every week of the year. We acknowledge and teach our children and families that our centre is on Ngoonawal land, and we are always working to improve our knowledge and understanding of the experiences of the Aboriginal people who have lived here for tens of thousands of years. - Amy Wauchop [WVCCC Pedagogical Leader] *Please note that the word Aborigines is no longer an appropriate word to use when referring to Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people

02.01.2022 In continuing our engagement for fun and learning the team at WVCCC have prepared for the children an AMAZING Book Week Celebration! Each day we have a different theme based on well-loved stories and we use these stories as provocations throughout our key learning areas and programs. Building on children's literacy, making meaning of their world and being confident to share their ideas with others is an important developmental milestone and occurs in so many different ways th...roughout the early years and into childhood and adolescence. Being involved in Book Week and instilling children with the love of story and storytelling aims at connecting them into so many different learning opportunities. Who remembers having that story read to them before going to bed, or curling up close to someone on the couch sharing their day? These are important things to continue and share. So across the week don't forget to grab a good book and settle into the adventure and keep an eye out for the Daily Reflections so as a family the story can continue. ~ Tracey-Lee Elliss [WVCCC Pedagogical Leader]
