25.01.2022 Tree planting - great to see 845 trees planted in our area. I would like more trees around the sediment pond on Athllon Drive. Where would you like more trees? President Fiona Carrick

24.01.2022 Floriade at the Pearce shops. Thank you Minnie for being so enthusiastic about planting bulbs and annuals in the round concrete planter boxes. The flowers are going to look fantastic in spring. Fiona

23.01.2022 Lucy Bladen says that Woden's development boom shows no signs of slowing. While we support the urban infill policy, the question is - is it being done sustainably with a balance between homes, jobs, public spaces and community facilities? We ask this in light of the loss of our recreation precinct - basketball stadium, pitch n putt, tennis courts, bowling greens and potentially the pool and ice skating rink. ... We are now losing our central civic area with the Town Square - overshadowed in the afternoons by a massive 24 storey building. - wind funnelling exacerbated making it difficult for people with mobility issues - losing the ability to be an entertainment precinct with live music and events due to residents living on the perimeter of the town square that may complain The site chosen for the CIT will only add to the overshadowing of the east west link through Woden We question the policy that does not plan for public spaces and community facilities to build a sense of belonging and community in this major hub that services a large catchment in Canberra’s south. 21.01.2022 The height and scale of the proposed residential towers behind the police station has been significantly reduced. Our concerns were valid. Thank you to the Design Review Panel for thinking about good design outcomes for Woden. We really appreciate it. 'The new changes are in response to feedback from the National Capital Design Review Panel which also had concerns about height, overall bulk and scale, visual amenity, overshadowing, landscaping, interface to surrounding streets and open space, and a failure to respond to the Woden Town Centre Master Plan.' https://the-riotact.com/hindmarsh-revises-soaring-tw/421816

19.01.2022 Placemaking Matters Developments and neighbourhoods shaped by the principles of placemaking not only succeed on a practical level but also increase quality of life, provide a sense of belonging and have emotional resonance. People tend to be happier, more productive and more inclined to care for thoughtfully designed spaces. Places that generate these good feelings progressively attract more people, more investment and more business. The resulting environmental, social and ...economic benefits ripple outwards through the wider community and the city as a whole. - City Renewal Authority Great Place Guide 2020

19.01.2022 Comments on W2 extended to 1 February 2021 Please send an email to [email protected] with your views. The W2 proposal is for 222 apartments (with a veneer of ground level commercial space) in three (14, 20 and 24 storey) towers on the north west corner of the Woden Town Square.... W2 is massive in bulk and scale and will overwhelm the Town Square by: - overshadowing the south (sunny) side of the square in the afternoons. - exacerbating wind funnelling potentially making it difficult for people with mobility issues - losing the ability to be an entertainment precinct with live music and events because it is likely that residents living on the perimeter of the town square will complain. This is damaging the future of the core of Woden as a place for community as it diminishes the attractiveness of the central area for people to meet and support small business. To date we have around 25 residential towers for homes for around 10,000 people in the town centre. If we lose the opportunity to bring activity to the Town Square where will be the ‘beating heart’ of Woden be?

18.01.2022 Do you need seeds to grow your own food?

18.01.2022 Reconciliation Day in the ACT In the ACT indigenous people make up 1.9 per cent of the population but 22 per cent of the prison population. We need to keep working to close the gap.

18.01.2022 I love your students work, their videos are also fantastic.

18.01.2022 Happy New Year! We are looking forward to thinking locally in 2021 with more people staying in the area and supporting our small businesses due to the pandemic. The WVCC is encouraging everyone to pause and think about how we would like our local communities to develop over the next 5, 10, 20 years and to have a view on the renewal of our suburbs and shopping centres for our quality of life.... A significant number of residential towers are being built in the Woden Town Centre. While the WVCC supports the ACT Government’s 70% urban infill policy, we want it to be done well with a balance between homes, jobs, community facilities and public spaces that are connected and environmentally sustainable. Over the Christmas break, the following DAs for 4 new residential towers have been available for comment. The WVCC will provide an assessment for your consideration. 18.01.2022 Beyond Q - the end of an era. Thank you Simon for enabling the community to meet in a comfortable, inclusive environment.

17.01.2022 Perfect weather in the Woden Town Square for the Christmas Carols! A huge thank you to everyone who showed up to enjoy the fantastic evening and to those who helped make it happen, especially the kids in the hospital and the Woden School who made the baubles for the tree.

16.01.2022 Did you know that the 1970 design for Woden was to have a Civic Centre with a theatre, hotel, law court, police station, library and a church around a centrally located forecourt? Our Town Centres are still supposed to be relatively self contained hubs with services and facilities for the communities they service. Woden is the Town Centre for Weston Creek too. While we don't need a law court or church in the centre we should have the cultural and recreational amenity in the p...recinct to service the growing south. 16.01.2022 The Woden Town Centre has 25 residential towers and around 10,000 people earmarked already. There are more areas zoned for towers around the town centre. We are pulling our weight with urban infill. We welcome development but are asking for a balance between homes, jobs, community facilities and sunny public spaces. Our Recreation Precinct was demolished (with the pool and ice rink set to be the next to go) and we have no cultural facility. We have gone backwards. Why do we h...ave to have towers around the central public space, the town square, when the City has place making not towers around Garema Place and City Walk. The overshadowing diminishes the attractiveness of the Town Square for business and a place where people want to be again and again. Double Standards. We have been raising the issue of the damage towers will do around the Town Square for years but no one is listening. See more

15.01.2022 Great article, it is time to draw a line in the sand and develop a master plan to guide the development of the hospital. The site for the new emergency building is in the wrong spot, we are growing the hospital towards the Garran Primary School with ambulance access from residential streets leading to further congestion. https://www.canberratimes.com.au//labor-has-had-decades-t/

14.01.2022 Amp It Up grants miss Woden, Weston Creek and Molonglo. Woden, Canberra's first Town Centre has slowly lost facilities and night life over many years. We need ambition and planning to create great places, not just residential towers for the infill policy.

13.01.2022 Hi everyone. Just letting you know that I have resigned as President of the WVCC and that Dr Jenny Stewart has been endorsed as the new President. Jenny will be in touch soon about the next public meeting which she is anticipating will be on 5 August 2020. Thanks for all your support over the years. Fiona

11.01.2022 Our paths need to support our active lifestyles. The corridor between Woden and the City connects the south with jobs, higher education and sports located in the north. Many people do not like to ride next to cars travelling at 80km/h. The WVCC is advocating for a dedicated cycle commuter corrider through the centre of Yarra Glen and Adelaide Av to enable active lifestyles. Fiona Carrick... President WVCC See more

11.01.2022 The sun is out, but the site for our new CIT (the boulavard) is in shade. What placemaking is there for Woden?

10.01.2022 What is the future of the Phillip Business Community? - It is primarily zoned for apartments. Small businesses are the backbone of the ACT. The only way to stop the closure rate is to have a clear plan for the future. The ACT has the lowest long-term business survival rate in the country: within five years, only 62.5 per cent of ACT start-ups are still trading (compared with a national average of 65.1 per cent)."... Graham Catt, Canberra Business Chamber Tom Adam continues to advocate for his business community and the WVCC will continue to advocate for a plan for the social, economic and environmental development of Woden.

08.01.2022 Woden CIT Mr Steel warned that there would be trade-offs that the community was going to need to grapple with. Why?... Why do we have to choose between green space and a building that looks like it is 26 storeys in a 12 storey zone? Mr Steel said that a range of sites had been considered but this one offered the opportunity to redevelop the north-east of the Woden Town Centre and solve a problem that had bedevilled it for years what to do with the empty space where the police station had been. What problem? It is a perfect site for a multi-purpose indoor sports stadium because it is in the shade of the 18 and 26 storey Grand Central. The CIT would be perfect on the carpark (with underground parking) between the Hellenic Club and the bus interchange where we could have human scale, green spaces and sunshine. The option provided represents more ad hoc planning (like SPIRE) with no vision for where community facilities like an indoor sports stadium and an arts centre would be located so they can be connected with the CIT to create a livable urban hub for the surrounding communities. The built environment is a long-term asset for our community. Buildings, streets and public spaces last decades, if not generations. It is critical that all changes to the built environment are sustainable and make a positive contribution to the way a place looks, how it functions and how long it lasts.

08.01.2022 Target at Cooleman Court to close. This is terrible news for our community. We can only hope that it opens up an opportunity for another great business. We are with you Weston Creek.

08.01.2022 Thank you Kylea and Troy from Christmas Trees to You for the fantastic tree on the Town Square. We will have baubles make by the kids at the Woden School and the Hospital. It has been 40 years since I tripped over in the pond while the family was watching the Woden Valley Youth Choir in the Woden Town Square. The WVYC first sang carols in Town Square in 1972. They continued for 9 years with the last carols being held in 1980 (40 years ago)... In 1981 the choir combined with the YMCA and the Lions Club to present the big Carols By Candlelight at old Parliament House which moved to Stage 88 in 1988. Don Whitbread said "The choir is delighted to be back at Woden after 40 years to share some Christmas music with the Woden Valley Community". We are excited to have you back!

07.01.2022 Borrowdale House development - Woden Town Square (WTS) A 24 storey residential tower on the perimeter of the WTS will significantly overshadow the square in the afternoons and reduce livability of the space and the opportunities to create a great entertainment area. While we support development in the town centre, we want it to be done well, to think about how we attract people into the centre and support small business. There are around 25 residential towers earmarked alread...y so how do we build a great community in the centre. The renewal of Woden needs to be guided by a plan for our social, economic and environmental development. We can do better, including in Weston Creek and Molonglo! Why isn't it better? Is it neglect or vested interests? Get involved with the future of your community. Weston Creek Community Council Our Molonglo Valley https://www.canberratimes.com.au//borrowdale-house-in-wo/

05.01.2022 Please prioritise the hospital and renew it properly so it has the capacity needed to service south east NSW. Please be a good neighbour and build SPIRE on building 3 (1.2 hectares facing Yamba Drive) so the emergency is not opposite the Garran Primary School. Please do not block Hospital Road as it is the main access through the hospital for public transport. A master plan is needed to ensure efficiencies in the location of facilities and to ensure future expansion is catered for.

02.01.2022 Noooooo ... this is so sad. Thank you for all the good times.

01.01.2022 1971 Woden Floods - remembrance at 7pm on 26 January Tragically, on 26 January 1971 following a torrential downpour, 7 young people lost their lives. The Woden area was subjected to widespread flooding, it was particularly bad around the Melrose Drive, Yamba Drive and Yarra Glenn intersection.... A small group of locals and Woden Police struggled to rescue people trapped and swept away. While many were saved, at the end of the night, seven people had lost their lives. Mona and Ben Smith of Lyons lost 3 children Carmel (19), Margaret (15) and Michael (6). In the same car, their cousins Jennifer (12) and Dianne Seymour (8) from Wangaratta also lost their lives. The other victims were Lon Cumberland (18) and Roderick Simon (20). Please join us at 7pm on Tuesday 26 January 2021 at the Flood Memorial in Curtin to remember the tragic loss of these young lives.
