06.01.2022 The Wodonga Historical Society are seeking general Committee members to join the team at their AGM, to be held on the 1st of December 2020 at 2 p.m. at the Wodonga Football Club rooms, Vermont Street, Wodonga. The Committee positions are a voluntary role and would assist the current committee members in assuming the day to day operations of the Historical Society. The Wodonga Historical Society is also calling out for volunteers to assist the newly appointed Collections Coord...inator to collate, photograph and interpret the extensive collection of historically significant items at their premises in Wodonga from January 2021. The Society is seeking individuals who would be able to commit to one or two shifts a month as the Wodonga Historical Society continues to organize and capture the fascinating social history of Wodonga and its surrounds. A genuine love of history and an interest in the social fabric of the city is an absolute must as well as the ability to read a great story, collate box loads of information and be prepared to assist in the organization of the extensive collections of old photos, books, maps and journals amongst other things. A COVID Safe Plan is in place and training would be provided. Experience in cataloguing and record-keeping would be an advantage but not a must. For more details on the AGM or to express your interest in becoming a volunteer, please contact the secretary at [email protected] See more

03.01.2022 Ariel Street school 1951, photo from Ian Grundy. School milk was introduced by Menzies Govt. Far from being a conspiracy to put a whole generation off drinking milk forever, school milk was conceived as a benefit. The State Grants (Milk for School Children) Act was passed by federal parliament in 1950 and by the end of 1951 most states were inflicting this benefit on children up to the age of 13. A report to the government in 1973 deemed school milk poor value for money and the Whitlam government abolished it.
