24.01.2022 First State Super is Australias 2nd largest superannuation fund and it has just decided to dump its shares in companies that derive more than 10 per cent of their revenue from thermal coal mining as it embarks on the most aggressive immediate climate push of any large local investor. First State Super, which holds $130 billion in retirement savings, is distributing a new climate plan among its members detailing initiatives to shield their money from the threats of global warming, including setting a 30 per cent emissions-reduction target across its investment portfolio by 2023 and a 45 per cent cut by 2030.

24.01.2022 Its vital we all get behind this bill!

24.01.2022 A reminder of this event featuring Rebecca Huntley tomorrow.

23.01.2022 Another great, free event from Write Around The Murray - Paddy Manning discusses his new book Body Count about the human toll of climate change. Stories of tragedy, loss, heroism and resilience, in a book that is both monument and warning. With Jane Rawson. Sunday 13 September 2020, 11:00 am - 11:45 am (via FB Live or Youtube) - see here for details: https://www.writearoundthemurray.org.au//author/body-count

20.01.2022 Several catastrophic events this year should have given all of us pause for thought. Most of us have surely found ourselves wondering how different things mi...ght have been had we taken more interest in what we have been doing to this planet; had our politics been guided by evidence and reason, not prejudice, class warfare and ideology. Now is a good time to be saying enough is enough, letter signatory, and former secretary of Treasurer Ken Henry said. There is a tsunami of Australian citizens saying enough is enough. Will the government listen?

19.01.2022 Big W in Lavington (and presumably Wangaratta) is having a sale on Rebecca Huntleys new book. As Osher Gunsberg says, The antidote to climate anxiety is action. Make your first action is reading this book. And now it will only cost you $24. Unfortunately its not yet available from Albury or Wodonga libraries.

19.01.2022 Very welcome news!

19.01.2022 Well done to Bert Washington for this excellent letter to the editor in todays Border Mail.

18.01.2022 Kudos to ALDI for committing to 100% renewable energy by 2021. Coles? Woolworths? Come on, you can do it too!

18.01.2022 On Monday (9 Nov), the Independent MP for Warringah, ZALI STEGGALL, will be introducing a CLIMATE ACTION BILL to Parliament. Here is a personal video message fr...om Zali of gratitude and encouragement to those taking part in the 'LINE THE STREETS' action taking place Monday morning. See more detail and register your interest at https://www.facebook.com/events/4449970758406210 As Zali says - we need to be there to reinforce to the pollies the importance of action on climate change. Come and let the politicians know that passing Zali's bill is their opportunity to take a meaningful and bipartisan first step at a Federal level for Australia to be a world leader in combating climate change - where we should have been all the time! 18.01.2022 An awful wake-up call highlighting the unjust, corrupt behaviour by the Adani Group in India. A disgraceful must-see video to understand whats really going on in their own country and why we cant trust them in Australia.

17.01.2022 Albury’s Libby Rouse is on a crusade to get more signatures for Zali Steggal’s Climate Act. She’s so determined she’s had 15,000 flyers printed (on 100% recycled paper) and pulled together a team of volunteers to letterbox them. Libby’s primary goal? To increase the number of signatures from Farrer residents. Farrer signatories currently stand at a paltry 305. Indi is a bit better at 877. Whichever electorate you live in, we urge you to sign the petition. Zali Steggal will table the Climate Act on 9th November. Please show your support by signing now: https://join.climateactnow.com.au/

15.01.2022 Sounds most worthwhile..

15.01.2022 Here is the first part of an open letter to the PM about the NCCC misleading the government. You can read the full text of this excellent letter here: https://www.greenpeace.org.au//Letter-regarding-NCCC-consu

14.01.2022 Stop press - promising developments in news just to hand. According to an article to appear in tomorrow’s The Border Mail, targets to gradually cut carbon emissions through until 2050 have been set by Albury Council staff and outlined to Albury councillors at a briefing on Monday night. The timetable for action comes as the first Greens party election candidate for Wodonga Council Rupinder Kaur says she will put a motion calling for that city to declare a climate emergency ...if she is elected this month. "Wodonga should join the over 1400 local government jurisdictions to use the term 'climate emergency' which has been used by over 11,000 scientists worldwide," Ms Kaur said. Well said, Rupinder! https://www.bordermail.com.au//climate-emergency-motion-/ See more

14.01.2022 Four hundred people watched Helen Haines MP launch her brilliant Local Power Plan this morning. Imagine a sunbelt of 10,000 locally-owned renewable power stations stretching right across the country, bringing new jobs, new opportunities and an infinite supply of cheap, clean, local power to Australia. The Local Power Plan sets out a pathway to achieving that vision. But for this to happen, we need the government to act. There's lots you can do to support this plan, including signing this petition to Federal Energy Minister Angus Taylor. It will take less than a minute - please do it now! https://cpagency.org.au/localpowerplan/

13.01.2022 Grrrr...unacceptable behaviour by the Federal Government. Constantly trying to weaken our environmental laws.

13.01.2022 Happy Sunday everyone! We would like to begin by saying a massive thank you to everyone who participated in our five community events. We had over 30 young peo...ple attend these events, and the collection of change innovations developed by the groups were inspiring. Since these events we have been busy compiling all of these amazing ideas into a report for Council. We have also had a short meeting with a few members of council, including the CEO and Mayor, to hand over this report. As we look towards our next steps as a group we would love to have more of Indigo Shire youth joining our team. And so, if you are a young member of the Indigo Shire who is worried about climate change and looking for a way to take tangible action, please send us a message! Lastly, we have now opened up this page to the public to post in. We would like to make it a space where youth in our area can share thoughts, ideas, actions and opportunities relating to climate change. So please feel free to share anything that you think is relevant and invite all your friends along too!

12.01.2022 This is the first of MSSIs Climate Change series 'Towards 2030: Climate Action for the Crucial Decade Ahead'. The series focuses on the actions needed to meet the global climate goals by 2030. Featuring Professor Tim Flannery & Dr Sophie Lewis on Tuesday 1 September from 12pm - 1pm.

11.01.2022 Know a young person in Indigo Shire who cares about climate change? Please let them know they have an important opportunity to share their views THIS WEEK. Former Indi MP Cathy McGowan has organised five online gatherings to discuss the councils climate action strategy, to be held between August 11 and 18. "The online gatherings will provide the opportunity for young people to gather knowledge, clarify opinions and build confidence to potentially respond to the plan individually and build a combined young voice to present to Indigo Shire after the final online gathering." Anyone interested can register on the Indigo Community - Young Voices and Climate Change " Facebook event page. 11.01.2022 WATCH members are often advised to focus on educating people on the science and facts of climate change. But as this article makes clear, peoples opinions on climate change have more to do with their sense of identity and purpose than science. A must-read article explaining the psychology of attitudes to climate change: https://www.theguardian.com//stop-making-sense-why-its-tim

11.01.2022 It's great to see there are some current Liberal MPs who recognise that renewables are cheaper than coal power: https://www.theguardian.com//collinsville-coal-power-plant

10.01.2022 The makers of the immensely popular War on Waste are releasing a new three part TV series on climate change, Fight for Planet A, starting this coming Tuesday at 8:30pm on the ABC. The impact of War on Waste was really noticeable. Imagine if Fight for Planet A has a similar impact in terms of sparking climate action. Please tune in and encourage family and friends to do likewise. https://about.abc.net.au//take-up-the-challenge-fight-for/

08.01.2022 Wodonga Council elections are being held in October and one of the candidates, Rupinder Kaur (top right of screen shot below), asked to meet our group to discuss her climate policies. Were a non-partisan group but always open to discussing climate change with people across the political spectrum. We applaud Rupinder for standing for Council and for developing a set of climate policies. In due course well send a short survey to all candidates and publish their responses on our website. The more we know about their attitudes to climate change, the easier it will be to cast our votes.

08.01.2022 Rebecca Huntley is definitely worth listening to.

08.01.2022 Good news. Fourth insurer pulls out of Adani project

08.01.2022 Have you read any cli-fi yet? Climate fiction is an increasingly popular genre; a way to talk about climate change via storytelling. This Thursday from 6-7pm two authors will be discussing their works of cli-fi at the launch of AlburyCitys Write Around The Murray. Ghost Species, Bradleys fifth novel, is set in Tasmania in the near future and centres on a secret project to resurrect Neanderthals. "Its about extinction and de-extinction, loss and love, climate catastrophe ...and collapse," the author told The Border Mail. "The greatest kind of antidote to despair is action, do something," Bradley said. "It seems to me that this kind of nebulous idea of hope is not much use. What we need is to be actually working to make things better, working to make change and thats where you actually find hope." 07.01.2022 The graph below shows the performance of fossil fuels (orange) over the past decade, compared to the ASX300 (blue). If you want to lose money on your investments, retain your energy stocks until they become stranded assets. Otherwise, sell out of fossil fuels because there is no way they can compete with renewable energy on the basis of price per kWh.

07.01.2022 Kat Bennett is running for Wodonga Council again and wants to see a target for reducing emissions. Hooray! Heres what she told The Border Mail: "I still feel like Ive got some unfinished business. Council has made awesome progress in terms of the environment - Ive championed council eliminating single-use plastics. But in this space, council still has work to do." She said she would like to see a target for reducing emissions. Heres to other council candidates expressing similar intentions! https://www.bordermail.com.au//kat-wants-to-come-back-fo/

07.01.2022 Great to hear Wodonga Council candidate Rupinder Kaur mention climate action in this brief video. Heres to all candidates doing likewise!

06.01.2022 WATCH members have repeatedly expressed concerns about the National COVID-19 Coordination Commission (NCCC), particularly the large proportion of NCCC members who are affiliated with the fossil fuel industry and the Commissions intent to focus on a gas-driven economic recovery. Well done to Jill Coghlan for her submission to a parliamentary inquiry into the NCCC and The Border Mail for this article in todays paper: https://www.bordermail.com.au//climate-group-wants-to-reb/

04.01.2022 Fewer than 300 Farrer residents have signed the petition in support of the Climate Act. Indi has around 800 signatories. Want climate action? Sign this petition now!

03.01.2022 Congratulations to Libby Rouse and her team for scoring a page 2 story on Zali Steggall's Climate Act in The Border Mail today. Zali will be tabling the Act this coming Monday. It’s modeled on a climate policy introduced in the UK back in 2008, so Australia’s at least 12 years behind the eight ball. Please, please show your support by signing the petition at the ‘Climate Act Now’ website. https://www.bordermail.com.au//keeping-locals-posted-on-/

01.01.2022 Woke up to excellent news on the front page of The Border Mail: COMMUNITY hopes for climate change action are being met by Albury Council adopting "ambitious" targets to cut carbon emissions, the city's deputy mayor believes. Under the plan, the council will cut emissions, including waste, by 10 per cent by 2025, 20 per cent by 2030, 80 per cent by 2040 and carbon neutral by 2050. According to Dr Amanda Cohn - Greens "It's a significant improvement on what we were looking at ...a year ago. "I think this is really showing leadership as an organisation, when you compare us with comparable councils in NSW and nationally, and it's also really meeting community expectations for council leadership for action on climate change." Councillor David Thurley called the targets "achievable but ambitious" and successfully added a rider to review them in 12 months.
