25.01.2022 A Shay geared locomotive scales the section of The Commonwealth Oil Corporation's Wolgan Valley Railway on the Newnes side of the famous Glowworm Tunnel in 1907.... The route had only opened earlier in the year, so was very new in this image. The Commonwealth Oil Corporation mined shale oil between 1907 and 1932. The building of the route was overseen by Henry Deane, an engineer who worked for The New South Wales Government Railways as well as on other railway and tramway projects in Australia. The route's main purpose was the movement of goods, however passenger services were also provided. The line was thirty two miles (fifty one kilometres) long to Newnes from the junction of The NSWGR's Main Western Line. Four Shay geared locomotives were imported to work the route. The largest of these was No. 4. Shay locomotives are ideal for working on lines with tight bends. The locos were scrapped after the line's closure, though assorted parts have been preserved. 07.01.2022 Please help us to get the Newnes Junction Signal Box fully restored! Please share this page to all of your friends! Sadly the signal box was burnt to the ground... in the 2019/2020 bushfires! The Newnes Junction Signal Box is of local significance as a relatively intact and functioning example of a 'Type E' Signal Box. It is of significance for its historic relationship and connection to the adjacent colliery. The signal box is a small timber weatherboard structure on brick base with corrugated iron gabled roof with timber barge board and finial. Some parts of the walls have been reclad in fibro. Multi-paned timber windows are located all around the building. Operating level windows are shaded by a convex shaped galvanised sheet awning. Access is via a small landing supported by decorative brackets. Photo courtesy of Matt Julian
