18.01.2022 Most horses pass from one human to another - some horsemen and women are patient and forgiving, others are rigorous and demanding, others are cruel, others are ...ignorant. Horses have to learn how to, at the minimum, walk, trot, canter, gallop, go on trails and maybe jump, to be treated by the vet, all with sense and good manners. Talented Thoroughbreds must learn how to win races, and if they can't do that, they must learn how to negotiate courses and jump over strange obstacles without touching them, or do complicated dance like movements or control cattle or accommodate severely handicapped children and adults in therapy work. Many horses learn all of these things in the course of a single lifetime. Besides this, they learn to understand and fit into the successive social systems of other horses they meet along the way. A horse's life is rather like twenty years in foster care, or in and out of prison, while at the same time changing schools over and over and discovering that not only do the other students already have their own social groups, but that what you learned at the old school hasn't much application at the new one. We do not require as much of any other species, including humans. That horses frequently excel, that they exceed the expectations of their owners and trainers in such circumstances, is as much a testament to their intelligence and adaptability as to their relationship skills or their natural generosity or their inborn nature. That they sometimes manifest the same symptoms as abandoned orphans - distress, strange behaviors, anger, fear - is less surprising than that they usually don't. No one expects a child, or even a dog to develop its intellectual capacities living in a box 23 hours a day and then doing controlled exercises the remaining one. Mammal minds develop through social interaction and stimulation. A horse that seems "stupid", "slow", "stubborn", etc. might just have not gotten the chance to learn! Take care of your horses and treasure them. Written by Jane Smiley

17.01.2022 SURVEY | Do horses need rugs? Do horses feel the cold? What about rugging during exercise? Horse rugging is commonplace in Australia. Currently there is no... published information about how horse owners rug their horses or what motivates them to do so, and this is what the University of Sydney want to find out from you. If you are over the age of 18 years and have owned or cared for a horse in the past 12 months in Australia, the University of Sydney invite you to participate in an online, anonymous survey about horse rugging and management practices in Australia The survey will take 5-10 minutes. 16.01.2022 Seen by Andrew last week, this is an extreme example of ‘proud flesh’. Proud flesh (also known as exuberant granulation tissue), is the excessive growth of the connective tissue and blood vessels that begin to fill in a healing wound. In severe cases, the mounds of pink tissue can take on a cauliflower-like appearance and protrude beyond the surface of the skin. Whilst granulation tissue is imperative in the wound healing process, if not monitored and treated appropriately it... can impair functionality/mobility (especially if over a joint) and can be prone to re traumatisation. What products are applied to a wound and how a wound is bandaged, can all influence the growth of granulation tissue and in some instance promote ‘proud flesh’. Should the latter occur, please consult with Andrew or Wade so that they may intervene and minimize or prevent this. Andrew surgically debrided the above proud flesh resulting in a much more aesthetic and functional result. This will now be bandaged and treated carefully to ensure that that there is no repeat of the original scenario.

15.01.2022 When assessing your horse, the colour of its mucous membranes (gums) can provide useful information on its cardiovascular function (heart and circulation) and general health. This is a short document detailing the different membrane colours and their meaning and how this information may assist your vet in diagnosing your horses ailment. 09.01.2022 Possible Addition of Drug to Antibiotic Arsenal for Treatment of PlacentitisIt appears that Doxycycline may be a useful addition to the (short) list of antibiotics which not only potentially treat the causative pathogens of placentitis, but which also successfully cross over the uterine and placental barriers to do so.https://thehorse.com/184859/doxy-passes-prelims-in-late-term-mares/

09.01.2022 FIRST CASE OF HENDRA VIRUS DETECTED IN NSW THIS YEAR Hendra virus has been confirmed in a 17 year old unvaccinated thoroughbred horse on a property south of Mur...willumbah, on the far north coast of NSW. The owner noticed the horse was depressed and having difficulty breathing on Friday, 29 May. A private veterinarian took samples for Hendra virus exclusion, but the horse deteriorated and was euthanised over the weekend. DPI is expecting to see an increased risk of Hendra virus this winter and has been working with Local Land Services to encourage private veterinarians and horse owners to take the necessary precautions including vaccinating horses, and wearing appropriate protective equipment. In NSW, there have been 23 confirmed horse deaths as a result of Hendra virus since 2006, with most cases occurring on the north coast. Horse owners are urged to remain vigilant and talk to their veterinarian about how they can reduce the risks of Hendra virus. For more information about Hendra, visit the DPI website Local Land Services NSW

04.01.2022 There's been a very good study published recently on surgery of the horse's stifle. It has a lot of important lessons, not only for horses with stifle problems... (which, compared to other joint problems, aren't all that common), but also for a lot of joint treatments. Heck, it has lessons for a lot of treatments in general. Hopefully, we learn. See more

04.01.2022 Has your horse ever had to undergo colic surgery? In some instances, depending on the cause of the colic, the specialist surgeon will elect to Dump the colon as seen here. Having performed an enterotomy (incision into the intestine) the intestine is thoroughly lavaged to help clear the impaction. In this case, a small enterolith was removed. Once the colon is empty, it is resutured shut before the intestine is returned to the abdomen and the abdomen is then closed.... #horse #equine #colic #surgery #veterinarian
