25.01.2022 Making our hearts smile Check out this message we received from some recent visitors... "Yesterday, Tuesday, two "old" folks had the opportunity to spend the day at your magnificent Botanic Garden. We just want to thank you for arranging the loan of the two mobility scooters so that we could comfortably view your Garden. As explained to you, on Doctor's orders, we have been in self-isolation since early March - not even being able to see our family! This has put us in a ...very depressed state. Being able to visit the Garden and roam around using the scooters was like having been awarded "Get out of Jail Free" cards. Freedom is indeed a precious thing which is not fully appreciated until we are denied it! We felt truly blessed by having beautiful surroundings, lovely weather, fresh air and a time to relax and forget about the pandemic. Your Garden is such a beautiful sight, and must be even more magical come springtime." If you or someone you know needs help getting around, we have 2 mobility scooters available to hire for free. 25.01.2022 Feature Friday Bringing you the gardens from the view of our visitors. Thanks Eddie Hu for this lovely pic showing a highlight of visiting the garden for many of our young visitors - the Duck Pond. Be like Eddie and avoid feeding the ducks bread as it can make them sick, and eventually even kill them. Healthier options include green peas, grapes cut in half, grains such as cracked corn, barley oats, birdseed, duck feed pellets (available from farm supply stores), earth wo...rms, or worms from your compost. For your chance to be featured tag us on Facebook or Instagram or use the hashtag #WollongongBotanicGarden #DuckPond #Nature

24.01.2022 Have you noticed birds flocking to the Parrot Trees (Schotia brachypetala) in the Flowering Trees and Shrubs Collection? This evergreen tree is very much sought after by parrots like these Rainbow Lorikeets for their abundance of nectar. The nectar pools in its crimson flowers and ferments resulting in a mild narcotic effect on the birds who consume it. In other words, these birds have been getting a little tipsy drinking this tree’s sweet nectar ... Flowers generally appear in spring, although exact flowering times vary from tree to tree. #Lorikeets

24.01.2022 Do you seeing carpets of purple petals on the streets of Wollongong during Jacaranda season too? Where did you spot some purple blooms? We’d love to see them. Share your favourite Jacaranda pics in the comments Our purple beauty is located in our Sorensen Garden (near Gleniffer Brae)... #Jacaranda #purple

24.01.2022 These beautiful Cabbage-tree Palms (Livistona australis) are slow growing local native palms often found in rainforest gullies near the sea and can reach up to 30m high. Cabbage-tree hats were worn in Australia from around 1799 and became an iconic piece of head wear right through to the early 1900s. Today, their prickly leaf stalks make it useful for establishing a boundary for regeneration - deer don't like it! Thanks to Horticulturalist Debby for taking this shot in our R...ainforest Collection. #AustralianNatives #Rainforest

24.01.2022 Not much can beat the beauty and vibrancy of an Azalea in Spring. They come in many colours but some of the hybrid/cultivar highlights in our collection at the moment are exhibiting various shades of pink. If you’re looking to add a pop of colour and interest to your garden, consider adding a few azaleas to the cool, lightly shaded areas of your garden. Get inspired by dropping into the Garden for a wander and let us know which azaleas are your favourites. You’ll find them ...on the Western side of Middle Creek. #azalea #spring

20.01.2022 Take a mini photographic tour of the Garden, thanks to @Leanne Maree Zautsen as this week's Feature Friday. Leanne has beautifully captured some vistas of the Garden putting on a stunning Spring show. Those Foxgloves (Digitalis purpurea cultivars) popping up in the bed by the entrance to the Rose Garden were definitely one of the most popular subjects for visitor photographers this week, for good reason! 18.01.2022 An upside to the recent restrictions and bushfires is a renewed enthusiasm for gardening. We have experienced unprecedented demand at our plant sales this year as people spend more time at home. Because our nursery here at the Botanic Garden propagate local specialist plants from scratch, we aren’t easily able to replenish stock from wholesale suppliers, as a retail nursery would. To best accommodate the current demand we will provide all our available stock on Friday, 20 N...ovember. Please note, this will be our final plant sale for 2020. The Saturday 28 November sale will be postponed until next year, as we anticipate not having sufficient stock available in such a short turnaround time. We encourage anyone looking to add some beautiful native plants into their home garden this year to drop into our Greenplan Nursery this Friday between 7.30am and 2.30pm. For more details about the sale including the list of available plants visit https://bit.ly/36GB2y1

18.01.2022 You won't see this very often - commonly known as Forest Wedding Bush (Ricinocarpos speciosus). It is native to southern Queensland and northern NSW, and is regionally rare this far down the coast on its southern limit. This beauty loves growing in creek banks, rocky slopes of hillsides, ridge tops, and old floodplains but you'll find it in our Australian Open Forest and Sandstone Collection flowering now! #australiannatives #wollongong

17.01.2022 An exciting day in the Rose Garden today. We've been tracking down some of the harder-to-find Australian bred heritage roses in partnership with the The Rose Society of NSW and their network of passionate rose lovers, some of who joined us in the gardens today. Two rose beauties have arrived today and set to flower next month and were kindly propagated by Jim and Patricia Cunningham. Jim also gave expert onsite planting advice today and kept us all on our toes Both were br...ed by Allan Read of the Illawarra and Shoalhaven, with Rosa ‘Sarah Anne’ (named after his wife), being the very first miniflora rose bred in Australia in 1996, and Rosa ‘Shining Bride’ a miniature rose bred in 2000. Allan Read has a long history and passion in breeding prize-winning roses and was the President of the National, State and Illawarra Rose Societies in the 1990’s. Allan was not able to join us in person but luckily he could FaceTime with us to plant his wonderful roses. Colin Hollis President and Kristin Dawson Secretary of the Rose Society of the NSW have been a great help throughout sourcing these and many other roses and were able to help us coordinate the planting today to secure these roses in our collection. 10.01.2022 Is this the scene of loyalty, betrayal, or both? This Roxburg Fig (Ficus auriculata) is fruiting profusely directly from the trunk and branches (scientifically called cauliflory). The fruit provides a safe shelter for the tiny wasps of the Agaonidae Family to breed and lay their eggs in - while in turn the tree relies on the wasps for pollination to produce fruit. A great story of co-operation... or is it?... Sometimes this relationship can turn sour, with some female flowers mimicking the scent of male flowers to deceive the wasp for their own benefit at the expense of the wasp! Come along and see this Roxburgh Fig in our Palm Collection (just north of the Discovery Centre) and read more about this mind blowing relationship below: http://www.bbc.com//20160429-a-tale-of-loyalty-and-betraya #RoxburghFig #PalmCollection

07.01.2022 The Poppy acquired its name as its flower buds literally ‘pop’ in the morning sun. Poppies come in a variety bright colours and are subsequently loved by bees. These colours can be seen in the artworks of a local artist who visited the Garden yesterday to view our Poppy display. This Poppy with its distinctive blood red coloured petals and black centre is probably the best known of all the poppies as it has become the international symbol for Remembrance Day. After World War... 1 these poppies grew in mass over the fields of battle and are said to represent the fallen soldiers. We will be pausing today to remember and honour the men and women who have served us. #WeRememberThem #poppy #lestweforget | Artist: Ken Tucker
