25.01.2022 Learning to fly over Murwillumbah today. Look out weeds! #drone #seekanddestroy

23.01.2022 CATFISH PARK Another of our Uki park sites is Catfish Park, which runs along the Tweed River at the bottom of Glenock Rd. This park was in great condition prior to the 2017 flood, with many strong and healthy trees re-establishing a canopy.... In April last year, the park was underwater. The flood knocked over and ripped out most of the regenerating forest. Many large trees did survive, but remain lying prone along the ground. Due to fallen trees, vines, and sigesbeckia, site access is minimal and weed control has been extremely difficult. It has taken us a long time to simply establish paths to move around the site. Priority weeds since re-entering the site have been giant devil's figs and castor oil plants, palm grass, rhodes grass and barna grass, and the vines that threaten to cover the site and suppress regrowth, such as madeira vine and balloon vine. This site is named after the catfish which live in the river there. Their many nests (dark rings) can be seen on the riverbed. This week we saw some large introduced koi carp there, which is not a great sign.

17.01.2022 REPAIRING THE ROUS Just as we have been working to repair the damaged riverbanks of the Oxley River, we have also been working to control erosion via planting on the Rous River, near the boundary between Chillingham and Crystal Creek. We have planted over 1200 trees on this site, with many of them having to be planted on the newly configured rock shelf. Needless to say, we couldn't auger the rocks, and the holes needed to be dug out by handtools. It was like working on a fryi...ng pan, and we praised the afternoon winds. Weed control has been difficult on the riverbank, and we have to be strategic, as weeds are all that is holding much of the damaged riverbank together.

15.01.2022 Do you have some big trees at your place? What about hollows?

15.01.2022 CENTENARY PARK, UKI Well hasn't it been hot and humid. Perfect weather for weeds... not so much for us poor sods in the field... We have spent most of the week at Centenary Park in Uki, reclaiming the site from grasses and annual weeds. We arrived a little too late in the season than we would have liked, and the job has been tough for our small team.... The natural regeneration here is fantastic... lilly pillys, bangalow palms, sandpaper figs, wattles, water gums, black beans... even Thorny Peas, a threatened species here on the Tweed. The flying foxes camped on site have deposited plenty of giant devils figs for us to deal with (thanks guys!), and thanks to the locals who have been pulling them out on their daily walks. It has been a pleasure meeting so many folk and their children (human and fur!) heading down for a swim. We are not used to having so many people on site. Thanks for the interest in what we are doing, your praises, your measured criticisms, and all the great convos Uki!

12.01.2022 At WES we can not only help you restore your bush block but help you move to a native lawn. Native grasses like the Basket Grass pictured here, doesn’t need mowing and feeds native animals like wallabies and pademelons. Don’t be stuck with a boring 20th century lawn. Move into the future with a native lawn!

12.01.2022 POTTSVILLE SEDIMENTATION PONDS On the fringes of suburbia in Pottsville sit Muskheart pond, Sassafrass pond, and Sugarglider pond. Our work on these sites mainly involves vegetation management, but we also assist in managing the immediate waterway habitats.... We have observed a great number of resident birds living here, including bush stone curlews, as well as snakes and frogs. The ponds have cane toad exclusion fencing which requires regular upkeep, and we also have to get creative on the banks to discourage the high traffic of waterbirds from trashing the native vegetation while it establishes. Sediment ponds do not need to devolve into suburban cesspits, but they do collect street runoff and therefore highlight the importance of keeping rubbish out of the gutters. Unfortunately, we have found a few swamphen nests that have been made out of plastic refuse.

12.01.2022 On Friday May 4th, Wollumbin Environmental Services volunteered it's time and energy to plant a new garden in front of the Murwillumbah Court House. The project was in partnership with Gary Bagnall from the New Leaf Cafe, who helped to organise the event and John Turnbull from Tweed Shire Council who donated the plants. WES was thrilled to be part of this project which helps to raise awareness of native plants and their use in the home garden.

11.01.2022 Cat's Claw Creeper is one of Australia's worst weeds, capable of destroying stands of pristine rainforest, this exotic vine is extremely invasive and spreads readily through thousands of tiny wind blown seeds. It was a gut-wrenching discovery to find this horrible weed had a toe-hold on the NSW/Qld border at Numinbah, located in a position where it could shed seed into both the upper Nerang River (Qld) and upper Rous River (NSW) catchments, and more alarmingly spread into nea...rby and inaccessible areas of National Parks. Thankfully, swift action has been taken by Tweed Shire Council staff to treat the weed and stop it's further spread. While more work needs to be done this is a great start to an ambitious project to eradicate Cat's Claw Creeper from the area. If you suspect you have Cat's Claw Creeper, please don't hesitate to contact us for an obligation free quote.

11.01.2022 Another 100 trees have been planted today at Round Mountain to help create Koala Corridors in the Tweed coastal landscape. The planting consisted of a mixture of Eucalyptus robusta, E. tereticornis as food trees and Melaleuca quinquenerva as habitat trees. This site has suffered from Acid Sulphate Soils and our previous planting suffered Aluminium toxicity. By adding lime to the soil tree growth has greatly improved. Project funded by Tweed Shire Council.

11.01.2022 PLATYPUS PARK, UKI If you have ever traveled between Murwillumbah and Uki, you may have noticed Platypus Park, situated on the confluence of the Tweed River and Smiths Creek, on both sides of the Smiths Creek (Rainbow) Bridge. This park was entirely submerged during the 2017 flood, and many of the trees were ripped out or knocked over. ... It contains a large and well-established regenerating black bean (Castanospermum australe) forest, and many Weeping Lilli Pillis (Syzygium floribunda). It is also home to the vulnerable Thorny Pea (Desmodium acanthocladum), a rare species in the Tweed. We are working hard here to save the trees in the existing plantings that were damaged in the flood, and also to take back the park from the march of invading weeds.

03.01.2022 REPAIRING THE OXLEY During the devastating flood of March 2017, the banks of this section of the Oxley River at Eungella experienced massive damage from erosion. With the support of Tweed Shire Council, who undertook extensive works to stablise the riverbanks, as well as Tweed Landcare, our small but passionate team proceeded to plant over 1700 trees across two sites.
