22.01.2022 One of the commonalities Ive seen in elite & professional level athletes is that theyve all had a great coach/es in their early teen years. A crucial age & s...tage of development- especially when it comes to mental & technical areas, but more importantly fostering a love of the game. This is a period when things get more serious, so the question is: how fun and interesting can the coach keep it for the player? My chat over dinner with legendary coach Andy Brandi last night confirmed this. Andy believes this is where the key lies for success later. And I agree. Staying on this, I dont think enough players who have made it to a high level give credit or realize how fortunate they were to have these coaches/ people early in their careers- the coaches who molded their games. Usually, the coaches you see sitting courtside at the bigger tournaments, arent the ones who instilled the fundamentals and help develop their game. See more

22.01.2022 Why I endorse the '40 yard rule' for parents in youth sports: Ive been around youth sports as an athlete and now coach for probably well over 30 years now. If... there is one thing I believe in with all my heart, its the 40 yard rule. Its the distance I recommend for parents to spectate from the sidelines/field/court etc Now before you say thats ridiculous. Maybe ask your kid if they prefer you right next to where theyre playing or rather some distance away where they can still see you youll probably be surprised by the answer. I remember as a kid I hated my parents or coaches to be breathing down my neck when I played. I felt claustrophobic at times. When they respected my choice of keeping distance, I felt less pressured, more independent to make decisions (right or wrong), but at the same time I still feel supported. I wanted to fight my own battles, today I look back and realize thats what give me my grit! Fact is, most kids love to have their parents there to watch, but dont like to hear/see/feel their parents comments or reactions. We need to remember that kids see, hear, feel and sense almost everything when playing. Yes, even that little sigh I did as a kid. For a kid when they play, most pressure doesnt come from the actual act of competing, but more from the act of pleasing their parents, loved ones or coaches. When a kid feels free, they play 'free'er' and enjoy the experience more. We also need to remember that It's their time, not ours. In fact, today when I consult to sports parents things one of the first things I suggest take space and just let your kid play. Its funny, I now have people calling me saying theyve adopted the McCaw 40yrd rule with success! Be that parent who endorses the 40 yard rule. Step back and let your kid be focused on the actual process of playing and enjoying the game. And anyhow, the get to see so much more from 40yards than close up! -Allistair McCaw #ChampionMinded Side note to coaches: Never enforce a rule or standard without explaining the WHY. Explain why it benefits everyone.

18.01.2022 Fantastic advice and explanation from J.Kloop. One should take note and its important.

18.01.2022 A fantastic letter written Brad Stevens, Head Coach of the Boston Celtics, to his 9-year-old daughter about "life advice" and the most important choices anyone ...can make: Be a great Teammate. Dear Kinsley: When I was asked to write you a letter for the Leaders and Daughters Event series, I thought of the many different things that I would love say to express what you mean to me, and how excited I am to have a front row seat in your journey through life. After tearing through my first few drafts (which were long rambles), I realized that writing a life advice letter to a 9-year old is quite a task. Therefore, I tried to boil my advice down to one of the most important choices anyone can make: Be a Great Teammate. Youll be on many teams throughout your life. Your family is a team. Your theatre group is a team. Your choir is a team. Youll compete with your soccer teammates, and try to play a harmonious tune with your orchestra. The thoughts below apply to all of these scenarios. Great teammates always put others first they are true servants. These qualities come easy for you. You have a genuine compassion for people, and that compassion is contagious. Life wont be perfect, so there will be times where this will be tested. Take the advice that my mom used to tell me - you will never regret choosing to be kind. Great teammates take that high road. Great teammates raise the energy in the room. They smile a lot. They show gratitude. People know that when they walk in, they have others best interest in mind, and want to bring out the best in each and every person. Who doesnt want to surround themselves with energy raisers? Great teammates listen and are empathetic. They put themselves in others shoes. They are inclusive and bring the group together, rather than judgmental to try to tear the group apart. Their own goals and dreams are important, but those take a backseat to the greater good. Great teammates realize that its not about them. When times are good, be the great teammate that others want to celebrate with. When times are tough, be the great teammate who offers a shoulder to be leaned on. When you get older, youll realize that it wasnt about the good or bad times, it was about who you navigated those times with, the lessons that you learned and the relationships that you forged. We are so thankful to be on your team. You and your brother inspire us every day. Love, Dad https://leadersanddaughters.com//brad-stevens-be-a-great-t
